My go to load is 42gr RL17 w/ 140g Nosler CC accurate from 100-1000yrds. Iam very familiar with RL17 and have used it extensively over the past 8yrs in my K31 swiss- rifles. So far, after testing 7 powders my go to powders for long range are RL17 and Superformance. For the smallest groups on paper out to 200yrds- it's 4895 36gr over 140g projectiles consistently .3 moa. another great video!

I ran up to 42.6 RL 17 with a Nosler RDF 140 and got an average of 2850 with SD of 11. The brass didn't show any bad signs but the 5th shot did pop a primer so I backed it down a bit. The nosler length is a 1.42 which is what the Berger is. The Sierra MK 140 is only 1.30. The shorter one can handle the load with less pressure than the longer bullets so I might have to try the SMK with the RL 17 at 42.6 and see how it does.

Brass looks great. That hotter load is exactly what my loads look like using 42 of Rl17 on the 147gr. I love the load but fear the temp instability will push it over the edge. I just got 8 more pounds of 4350 and am going to try the Rl16 as advised by Alliant. Glad to see you heating them up though.

I recreated your loads on my Ruger Precision Rifle with very similar results. My low node was 41.8 and my high node was also 42.6 with the RL 17. I loaded long at 2.900. Both achieved .5 MOA using a five round string. I plan to use this load for F Class Open next week.

I met an avid competitive shooter who explained that a 24" barrel 6.5 Creedmoor shooting a 140 gr should have a sweet spot at around 2710 fps and another one at around 2820 fps. This is regardless of atmospheric conditions and powder type. It all comes down to barrel harmonics and making sure that the barrel oscillates at a natural frequency. It's a theory called "optimum barrel time". With RL-17 and Hornady 140 gr ELD's, I found the same velocity sweet spots, albeit it took me different powder charges from what you had.

From what I have seen, his seems to normally shoot well in the 2715 range. Strange this one seems to have done the worst at the 2730.

I shoot F-O class and like the Berger 140 Hybrid in the 6.5 Creedmoor. My best results with a 28" Brux barrel shooting H4350 at 42.0 grains with .02 jump was a .292" group (100yds)/4" group(1000yds). The average velocity was 2795 fps with SD 8.1. Thanks to your work I will try the RL 17 that I have on hand. I also like the Sierra 142gr bullet that you work up in your other video. Keep up the great videos!

I am using fired case and about 3/4 thou neck tension and bolt close for measuring off the lands. No more COL tools or the threaded case, I want actual. I use a Sinclair ogive insert and $$ Mitubi digital caliper. I also do measure to the metlap but not too concerned since loading singles not out of the mag and off my bench rest for testing. I've tricked out my RPR with a Benchmark Barrels 5R 27" since mine came as .243 and I wanted another 6.5. Also installed a Timney drop in trigger far better and an ambi-safety as I'm a left. 3 to 18 Meopta scope. So far, my best groups are 5 to 7 off the lands, 2.2185 is my jam. I'm using Lee collet neck die, Forster bushing/bump die w/o bushing setting the shoulder back 1.5 to 2 thou after 4 firings. I use 0000 steel wool to clean case low speed spin, 6.5 brass brush low speed spin clean case mouth. Primer pocket brush low speed. VLD chamfor in and out tad bit. Wilson case trim when needed to 1.910. 43 g. Hodgdon Superformance is very consistent temps. I use a AAC Cyclone .30cal. suppressor which I find tunes the harmonincs. Magneto Speed Chrono attached to suppressor. Avg. muzzle high 2,600's to 2,700. 50+ FPS faster w/o the suppressor but also less accurate. I get a lot of one hole groups with 3 shot testing and most always sub MOA w/ 5 shot strings. The gun is a better shooter than I but I'm pretty good. My custom built Benchmark Barrels 6.5 is a consistent tack driver. it likes Sierra 140 MK and 139g Lapua Scenars and other combinatios of powder, primers and cases. The best brass so far is Nosler both guns. Slight difference with BR2 vs. 210M. All testing is 100 meters home range.

I would personally split the difference between that 42.0 and 42.6 gr load and go 42.3gr. I'm betting it will shoot 1/2MOA and a +/- .2gr variance with some sloppy reloading should keep you safe as far as POI. I have a 1/2MOA load with the Berger 140gr Hybrid and 42.0gr H4350, but I am messing around with a .6MOA load with the Berger 130gr AR Hybrid and 43.5gr H4350 since I get 150fps more and less drop out to 1000 and a only .1/.2 difference in wind drift. Granted, I have yet to try it at distance.

How hot was the temperature outside when you did the test? R17 is a great powder, but it is temp sensitive and if you find a great load on the upper scale in cooler temps, it can bite you in the ass in summer. With no H4350 out there R17 is a great option.

I believe Reloder 17 is a double base powder so you "might" need to keep your eye on pressure spikes in hot weather or with hot barrel situations if you're running your loads close to the edge. I would try one of the Hodgdon Extreme powders, maybe H4350 to see if you can duplicate those results.

I’ve been shooting the “Marvin Stuart” load with great success. I’m at 8.6mils at 1,000 yards. I don’t have a chrono but backwards calculating the round, I’m at about 2723fps. Using 140gr hornady HPBT with h4350. Have you done a work up with any hornady 140gr bullets and higher charge of h4350? Or can you repeat the Reloder 17 with a 140gr hornady bullet?
@BoltActionReloading

I will probably work my way back around. I have plenty of H4350 on the shelf but I really seem to be having good luck with RL-16 at this point. Between different factors I haven't tried lots of things I would like to. More stuff is always coming, just getting time to do it all is the problem. I have several Lapua bullets to try as well, a couple more Bergers, I have more ideas than time is all.

I went all over the map trying powders and bullets for the 6.5 I decided on the RL 17 I tried both ends of the spectrum from the starting loads to a little past max didn't get any heavy bolt lift or brass flow but the accuracy node for my savage 10t was 41 grains. Everything below this was 1 1/2" or greater, everything over 41.0 was about 3/4-1". On a good day I've shot a 1/4" group, bad days 1/2". My average speed was 2750. My intentions were for this rifle to replace my 25-06 for deer hunting, and my 308 for long range steel. The load was golden to 950 yds but is a little squirrelly at 1000 and beyond, it didn't give me that crazy lights out performance at extreme range I hoped for but for now while I tinker with some slower powders rl 17 is my powder on the 140 Berger. The bergers seem to beat the Hornady ELD down range but not by much
@BoltActionReloading

+Bob Wire have your tried the 147 ELD? The bc on that bullet is so high if you can get it to shoot straight it seems like a logical choice. I know a lot of guys like the Bergers though.

moparmadman I tried the 143 eld x with RL 17 in the same charge range it seemed to be really consistent, but never got a group tighter than 1/2" but they seemed to shoot .50 on a consistent basis. They seemed to be less erratic past 1000 shooting steel, in that I mean trajectories seem to be more predictable. I don't have any live media on our place to test these projectiles in at distance so I can't speak to terminal performance on either other that we've shot paper for zero at 100 and 200 and they push through the 1/2" conveyor belt we use for backing very nice, so I believe they both should penetrate well but where they have hit the wood that the backer is on they just obliterate it.

moparmadman thank you I will watch it. Just found your channel today. My statement is contradictory to itself Berger is my choice, but I say how the eld did better past 1000, the Berger seems to shoot very good in the ranges that I would really shoot at a live target ( pick your scenario man or beast) any extreme range shooting is just play time for me. I would like to look at some powders like RL 22 or Retumbo and treat it like a overbore cartridge. I have read the water volume and powder burn rate formula and its safety doable, but I bet the brass life would be short. Do you have any videos going down that rabbit hole?

Actually for my competition rounds I don't load to the maximum, I see that the groups are good less then 10mm at 100m and then see If can keep supersonic to the max range I will be shooting mostly this is never beyond 1000m. Consistancy and unifromity is the way to go, speed is nice if you want still a lot of impact on distance, for punching holes in paper or ringing steel not,it only needs to ring...

RL17 has tested to be the most accurate in my RPR (at 100 yds) with Hornday ELDM (140 gr). I've gotten some equal or better SD/ES with H4350, RL16, Barnes Match, and Nosler RDF. However, it seems the lowest SD/ES are accompanied by the worst groups, something that seems counter intuitive. I can only assume that there is an issue with velocity/barrel harmonics in relation to the pressure pulse shape/duration with these bullets/powders. Speaking of velocity; my barrel went through its 'speed up' stage in break-in at around 250 rounds; the same load of RL17 (42.2 gr/140 gr ELDM/CCI200/Hrndy brass) jumped average MV from 2781 to 2843. The groups also opened up with the higher velocity and SD/ES increased. I incremented the load up in stages to 42.5; SD had dropped to 7.2, MV was 2888. Groups were/are abysmal with this load (no pressure signs that can be discerned). So I'm stepping back down the other direction to in an attempt to find the same velocity/accuracy node that I had prior to the speed up. I had read on another site that an analysis had been done/was available on barrel length/caliber/velocity to indicate where barrel harmonics might indicate the most accurate velocity sweet spots. For a 24", 6.5 CM, the post stated that velocity/barrel harmonics for the RPR should have an accuracy point around 2741 and another around 2821. I wasn't looking for those points specifically (not knowing about that factoid then), but I had noted my most accurate loads, regardless of SD/ES, seem to occur around 2750 ish velocity ranges. It will be interesting to go back and look for actual velocity / accuracy correspondences.

Bolt Action Reloading Yes, results were uninspiring from an accuracy stand point. However... Just acquired a sinclair bullet ogive comparator - like the Hornady but steel/stainless steel instead of aluminum. Plus comparator inserts that I actually needed. To the point, just started reloading a few rounds to conduct some primer tests on my loads after watching your video on it. Due to still using the factory Pmags in RPR, COAL is my limitation rather than COGL and chamber depth. Just fir grins and to get familiar with the tool I started checking ogive overal length after getting my new redding seater die set up for my Hornady ELDMs with a target COAL of 2.815. Recorded my OGL after setup on first round; second round wasn’t close, .02” longer. Set it aside after verifying I hadn’t short stroked. Third was on target, fourth was .015 long. To make a long story short, over that 20 rounds my COGL varied .020” on the extreme spread. I had to make individual adjustments on every cartridge to keep the COGL within the tolerance I felt acceptable (+/- .001”). I ran a spot check of randomly selected 140 gr EKDMs, RDF, and Barnes Match. Variation spread was .003” for all of them with Hornady the worst case for bullet to bullet variation. Trying to imagine what could cause a cartridge seating variation of that magnitude that is not reflected in actual ogive variation. The only thing I can think of is my press and/or shell holder. My press is a Hornady LnL classic with RCBS shell holder. Any ideas?

Not really. I haven't tried to measure every detail on that load, it just loaded and worked well.
@gclaytony
@gclaytony 6 жыл бұрын
Bolt Action Reloading I’m can’t discount a potential issue with my press. I just went through all 150 rnds of previously loaded ammo, putting them through the new redding seating die, pre set for the cogl that I want. The majority came out spot on, but about every 15-20th rnd, it left one approx .02” long. It required a searing depth adjustment to bring within tolerance,, always approximately the same from the base setting. My rand check of ELDMs found no variations of that magnitude, which would seem to leave something affecting the consistency of the ram stroke. Possibly a minute flat spot in one of the arm link pins? Just wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar?

Superformance works well with longer barrels I guess, My creedmoor has a 28" Bartlein heavy Palma. Really good results with the 123 and 139 scenars. Been looking to see if I can find a heavier projectile that betters the scenars. I'll keep watching, pick bits out of your data and mix and match with mine.

+TheHGuy R I found it at one of my local stores. It's not easy. I have seen it twice in about a year. I have some videos on good alternatives and am always making more.

Would you try the temp sensitivity of RL17

I have been trying to think of a controlled way of doing this but so far unsuccessful. I would like a controlled temperature rather than shot hot and shot cold. Any suggestions on how to control the temperature accurately I am interested in. Thanks for commenting.

moparmadman I 've seen it done with hornady factory ammo in an ice chest @32 degrees, under shade for air temp, and then in the sun for three different temps. The test seemed to show decent results but i haven't tried it myself. Just a thought, thanks for the reply.

+Back30shooters I thought about going some kind of series to test some of the powders but controlling the temperatures for the higher temp seems difficult to me. I would like to be able to test different powders on different days to essentially the same conditions.

If Booger bullets weren't so expensive Id use them all the time.

+mojo jojo I agree. I really wasn't going to bother testing them, but got them for a little under .40 a piece so I didn't feel so bad. I can see why people swear by them though.

Funny bergers here in Australia are $10-20 cheaper than Hornady and Sierras. Lucky us for once haha

+Luke Heffo I still wouldn't classify you guys as lucky, but if bergers were cheaper not sure why you would shoot the others.

Hi Hans thanks for commenting. I would love to hear you expand on your comment. I am guessing you are not shooting the exact combination that I am. (and probably not a identical reloading process) Obviously getting my SD / ES lower is my goal. Any insight into your reloading process is appreciated.

Hi, Well I have been reloading now for 29 years. All kinds, I use now a Hornady lock and load progressive press for most of my reloading. I also tried the electronic scales and different powder delivery devices RCBS, LEE hornady. I found out that for example the Hornady electronic scales can differ 1 full grain if you put your cell phone next to it (says so in the manual but who reads that right) but also it differs if the electronics are on for a while or not, so I use it to check my load and confirm with a RCBS analog scale. I also found I get the most consistand SD with the powder feeder from hornady for the lock n load. I have been trying the last weeks the 142 Sierra HPBT #1742 with Vithavuori 550 starting low at 37 upto 42,5 and I found between 39,2 and 40,5 I get groups of 8mm at 100 meters with a COL of 71 mm at a speed of 40,5 = 792m/s. If I increas to 42,5 the rounds start stringing horizontaly. I shoot a Tikka Tac A1 in 6,5CM with a IOR LUTAZ 3-25x50 FFP IL 8xtreme reticle. I also tried the Amax from hornady 123 loads with VV550 42,5grn getting 830m/s speeds and really good groupings at 100m 1cm and less but if I reach out to 400m it go 's way high and spreads out crazy even with almost no wind.

euh... Horndy brass FED 210 primer, I did find that using large primer instead of the small BR primer in Lapua brass gives me a 30m/s more speed with the large primers. Also I found the hornady brass much more inconsistent then the Lapua brass especially the primers holes not being centered correctly

Very interesting information. Mostly I guess I am surprised about the SD between 1-5. I rarely achieve 5. I am very interested in your Brass preparation steps to achieve that. If you look further into my channel I have tested a lot of different projectile in 6.5 Creedmoor. Using Varget I have had the Hornady 123 up to 876m/s without issue and likely could keep going. I have never tried any of the Vithavuori as they are more expensive and more difficult to get around here. I just started running some tests on Alliant RL-16 and have been impressed with the numbers I could achieve with it so far. (Not on the 123 though) As far as scales I trust my charges are very consistent. I periodically throw my check weights back on and always get repeatable numbers. I also double check every charge on 2 scales, If they don't agree I don't use them. I never turn off my chargemaster unless I won't be reloading for a long period of time. (days)

So what I do for rifle reloading is the following, I firefrom my cases, then after firing I lube them with a spray from Dillon, it helps clean the cases also. Deprime with RCBS or Hornady decap dy in my lock and load progressive. Then I timble with dry medium mostly a Dillon tumbler with RCBS medium(works best for me) sometimes I put them in my sonic cleaner if really dirty. Then I make them to the right size depending on caliber I use a Hornady case trimmer with a handdril. Then I champfer the case mouth to get rid of burs and clean the primer pocket, with a RCBS case prep station last I brush the case from the inside making sure all burs are gone. Run my finger nail acros the mouth of the case. Then I aneel my cases after 2 firings be careful no to over heat the cases (lots of vids online) I use a plumber tortch and some plyers. Also depending on the brand of case , for example S&B I find that the primer pocket shrinks after anneeling. Then I prime the case with RCBS handpriming tool. then check powder and put the round on the COL I measure I use a rcbs comptition (not useball with aprogressive press) or a hornady stardard seating dy. I paint the bullet with a marker and see if it touches the lands, depending on the rifle its easy or hard with my Tikka very small tolerances, with my browning x bolt no way I can touch the lands and feed the magazine. The tikka the less jump the bullet has to do the better however wiht this high psi its bad for the throuth of the barrel so I try backing of al least 0.2. I first find the rigth load that groupos well under 1cm at 100m then I play with the seating dept to fine tune the load. friend of mine uses in his 7.08 Amax bullets and lapua brass and she gets SD 's not above 1.5,.. he 's ex special forces I think he loads them pr grain LOL anyway I would not believe it also if I hadn't seen it...onmy own magnetospeed
