about 25+ years ago a girlfriend bought me an angle grinder from Northern Tool for $7. she told me how cheap it was and it was just a stocking stuffer so if it failed, no biggie. it was my only grinder for 20 years and i USED it. i built things like snowmobile trailers and skid steer attachments etc. one winter i was removing mounts from a bobcat bucket and i would grind with it until it got too hot to hold with chopper mitts on, let it cool for a few and start it up again. finally the dammed thing fell off the bench and the op rod to the switch broke. i rigged it constant on an put it back together. it still works to this day, just plug it in and let'er buck. nice and safe.

I had one of these grinders last me about 2 years. I seen now that the grease got too hot during it's last use and leaked through the plastic then incidentally caught on fire. Luckily I reacted quick enough to rip the cord outta my surge protector and toss the thing on the ground so I could put out the blaze with my beer. The next day I went to harbor freight to buy the exact same grinder again for $11.

I was a diesel mechanic on a research boat back in a former life & we had several of the $14 ones on hand for the jobs where survival of the tool was "questionable". They always surprised me on how much abuse they could take before letting out the smoke. 2 main failure points we saw were cooking the brush plastic (as you predicted), and the screws holding the aluminum head to the body would break out of the plastic if dropped. Oh, and the head leaked grease like a pecker in a whore house, but at $14 a pop, who cares?! It kept the high dollar grinders safe when you're hanging off the side of the boat or balls deep in bilge sludge.

Previous Generation version had an alloy "snouty bit" (at least here in AUS) - but they were $25 Australian and came with a 12 month replacement warranty - and spare brushes (for unknown reasons) - they were fine as long as treated like a grinding "service" - aka don't get upset, just return for new one. Only had one spectacularly let the smoke out - while cutting a 5t truck chassis - probably fair.

I maintain that, for the price, two or three of them is perfect - not for replacements, but to get through jobs faster by leaving whatever wheels (cutting, grinding, wire, flap-disk) I'm using the most on each. Changing wheels on angle grinders is a retired-man's past-time; but three, mount those fuckers, and get the god damned job done.

@@tommypetraglia4688 That's a great idea as well. Unless you're using wire brush or diamond cup attachments, a basic cheapy grinder will get the job done. It's the dynamic loading that the cup attachments will put on the gearbox that the cheapies can't handle. The other exception are abrasive flap wheels that eventually require downward force to get the most of the abrasive which can damage cheap grinders.

I bought a pair of harbor freight 4.5 inch angle grinders for about $14 each when I started doing welding and metalworking on a shoe string budget. The first one took a dump after about an hour and half grinding plate steel with a flap disc. Curious like you, I took it apart to find out what failed. The brush holder had melted just like you would predict. The same grinder also had developed some gear noise in the head before it died. The second grinder power switch quit working unless you would tap on the side of it. I took it apart and found it was a cheap momentary on/off switch (correct name escaping my thoughts at the moment) with the wire soldered on. So I soldered the switch I transplanted from the other grinder into the second one. The grinder lasted about a month before the brushes wore out down to the springs. One brush was worn more than the other by about 25%. The spring from the worst one got caught in the commutator and havoc followed. The gear box itself on both grinders were cast aluminum. It looks like they finally upgraded the power switch on yours to a better version but went backwards by using plastic for the gear box head. Needless to say, both grinder armatures make some nice robot sculptures when you make scrap metal art out of them. I bought a Milwaukee 11A 4.5" angle grinder to replace the HF one that died and it is a beast. You can hog on a flap disc or grinding wheel and it barely bogs down. Before I catch hell for saying hogging on it, that was just to find out how stout it was after I bought it. I don't run the piss out of my tools. The Milwaukee runs about half of the temperature the harbor freight units ran and have yet to have any trouble out of it in the 2 years I've owned it. It did get dropped when I was on the shop roof and the cord caught it with full weight on it during the fall and didn't break the cord loose internally. Tough grinder. It has fallen off the bench a few times and survived. If you plan on using a grinder heavily but like the 4.5 inch compact size, buy the 11A version over the 7A. Big difference in ability. Just my two cents. Love your channel AvE as honesty and bluntness is always a win in my book!

I bought one of these from harbor freight when I was in high school. I thought I'd buy a better grinder when it finally crapped out on me. But it still hasn't. It survived being my main way of cutting metal for smithing and casting, several weeks of cutting concrete board, granite, and tile, and even a good bit of woodworking. It's packed with dust and grease. And it just won't die. The only maintenance I've done is replaced the brushes and packed the head with red-n-tacky grease. There was barely any grease from the factory, nothing like the amount shown in this video. The head got alot quieter and cooler after I packed it. I've actually grown to like it. You almost can't snap a disk because it's so underpowered. I've never snapped a disk with this grinder, and I've been through a few hundred at this point. It's also easier to control what you're doing, for the same reason. I added an in-line foot-pedal deadman's switch after a couple of close calls, and I like that set up alot more than a typical paddle grinder. I bought a second one for 10 bucks when they had a sale. My plan was always to buy the Metabo of my dreams when my Chinese POS died, but now I just don't think there's any point.

I fabricate a lot which means I weld and grind. I have about 6 of these in the American version of the Chinese model. The FIRST thing I do is replace that funky grease with a good moly-lithium that strings when I pull it apart in my fingers. No evidence of grease leaking but I have had failures. Before I did the grease thing, the gears wore out fairly fast. Brushes get hot which takes the memory from the coil springs. As long as I go easy I can get some miles out of these. So, I always use cutoff wheels. The cheapest I've bought these for is US$9.00. Yep, for nine bucks I don't cry when one fails. I've also used parts from failed grinders to fix others. Ours come with a spare pair of brushes but failure usually comes before they're needed. Our model comes with a maintained-position switch. No problem until someone leaves the damn thing on and you go to plug it in. I always check. Go Wings! - Dave

I do a lot of scrapping and have noticed an interesting trend. You made a comment about the "LARGE" wire size of the field windings. Please take a file to the magnet wire used. I have seen on a lot of appliances like washing machines motors and Micro Wave Transformers have copper colored Aluminum wire which is usually a larger gauge than the real copper wire used. Thanks KC1IPA

Well, for 2 for $35, and I use a grinder about once every 5 years. I'm just sayin.

You are right about the two "grades" of harbor freight grinder. The normally $15 one and the normally $24 dollar one. The more expensive one makes less funny noises and seems more robust. Neither one will cut 1/2 rebar for 8 straight hours on a job. They just burn up. These things are not intended for continuous full load current. Having said that, I've had one at home for nearly eight years now and it seems just fine. I use it doing projects in the garage (cutting all thread, sanding sheet metal with a flap disk) and it still works just fine. The reason I like this model is the light weight and the gear box is smaller allowing it to get into hard to reach places with a smaller cutoff wheel. Looking forward to watching more videos, and always watch out for the Barney Fife clib board warriors.

Our first angle grinder was $15 from HF. It lasted long enough for us to learn that an angle grinder is well worth having and was probably worth the $15 on sale and not the $20 normal price. Obviously the Dewalt has probable done 20x the grinding and is still going strong and only cost $80.

I have to say I have one from harbor freight I only paid a little over 9 dollars on sale that works fine for me but I only do light work I've used it for several years but if I needed it all the time for work I would buy a better one.

I got myself one as well, $12, "DrillMaster." Pleasantly surprised as I nipped off several rusted nuts and bolts and modified couple strut assembly frames. I made sure to stop for few seconds when I felt it get hot as other youtubers have suggested. Granted its underwhelming compared to company's Makitas I've used to earn living and also bit annoying in power as its only a sad 4.3amps and bogs down to a complete stop if you apply bit pressure so it'll take slightly longer to grind what would otherwise take less time but to my surprise, the shit didn't die. Yet. Not once did it trip cut off power, just steadily grinded away. For a cheapy, it really is something. Not expecting much, I didn't even bother getting their 1yr extended warranty since I was certain that it die by the end of my project. Nope. Anyway, I got a few more rounds of diy to play around with this and see what it takes to kill it but from what I've seen, use it right with small scale work and it could certainly last you years. it's definitely a keeper for small home use.

+DonnieDarko1 I guess you could also throw this in the back of your trunk since its amps are low and won't really drain your car batteries supposing you haven't rigged your car with dual battery system or generator.

I've had this grinder for 6 years and it;s been great honestly. cut custom 3/16 engine mounts, body work grinding/cutting, probably 20 solid hours of use out of it for 25 bucks, i'll go out and buy another when this one fails for sure! No leaks, nothing has failed yet and I've been pretty rough with it.

IMHO Chicago electric works well for home. I used one for five years, building a rock crawler, before the switch gave up. Replaced it with Drill Master, the smoke escaped from that POS before I got one weld dressed. One good thing about HF they will take ANYTHING back if you have a receipt. All I was out to learn that lesson was the gas to drive there and back with a new Chicago Electric Angle Grinder. Would I like the Metabo? Hell yes. Can I justify the cost for a tool I use once or twice a month? Hell no.

I've got the cheapo HF grinder. The grease doesn't leak out, but then again mine actually has a cast aluminum piece instead of the nylon. The fan was the weak point on mine. Used it about 6 months and she broke off inside. Still works, but I'm going to have to pull it apart and JB weld it back together.

About a week after i graduated i got my first welding job building oil tanks. I needed to bring my own lid and grinder. I bought a crappy princess auto helmet and a $22 4.5" T&T grinder. That grinder lasted me 2 years in the worst job conditions ive worked in to this day. i used it with a 5 inch wire wheel to grind off slag. just tossed the guard. lid always down while buffing off slag anyways. The only reason i got rid of it is i finally got gifted a 5 and 6" pair of Makitas (which i always stop them with the loosening pin. Still going strong for 5 years now). they are for sure better. but for that crazy cheap grinder it was fantastic.
