+JK BRown Great observation. Awhile back PBS aired a new generation sort of ocean show with Jacques Cousteau's relatives and they tested them all. One Californian mother fed her son nothing but organic food and still the tests revealed he overwhelmingly was the most likely to get testicular cancer. Remember the ozone hole over CA? They kind of infered it might be that. Undoubtedly they get more UV than most of us, at the very least.

I have few of these lenze drives. I used one on my DIY compost trommel. It turns out a plastic shopping bag does not work well as a 'temporary' outdoor enclosure. The drive emitted a loud bang after powering it for the first time in 6 months. I opened it up and found an unfortunate partially vaporized spider across the main capacitor. I cleaned the webs and crap out the VFD and found no damage. It has been operating fine since.

I think as far as the thermal paste producing that fractal design every time, its got more to do with the pressure applied, and then you pulling the thing up. You can see this if you apply thermal paste to a CPU, then lift the heat sink off even when its still wet.
@dasstackenblochen92507 жыл бұрын
Yeah this doesn't indicate bad thermal contact. It's just how these viscous white liquids behave. It's a problem if its all dried right up... In fact, if the topographic map looks nice and even all over it means that the schmoo layer had a consistent thickness and contacted both sides well.
@Sizukun17 жыл бұрын
While I don't know for sure, AvE doesn't seem like the type to be applying thermal paste to CPU's or heat sinks. I assume he could use some lithium grease, toothpase, or any other viscous paste/grease, apply it to a flat surface and use another flat surface to replicate this. His Gauge blocks would be fine, otherwise he could re-use these heat sinks just as a little experiment.
@peglor7 жыл бұрын
I'd call it more of a constructal than a fractal pattern. Constructal patterns have a minimum feature size determined by the physics being examined rather than being a mathematical pattern that looks similar at all scales. Constructal patterns usually show up where there are two ways for a system to distribute energy/mass/velocity. Tree like patterns are the most efficient way of joining an area to a point if you have an expensive but high capacity path competing with a cheap but low capacity path, which is presumably what's happening as the heat sink is lifted off where air wants to flow into the gap as it opens while schmoo wants to get out of the way.

Not sure if its been mentioned before but the reason the thermal compound looks all cracked (assuming its not totally dry) is that the sticks to both sides and surface tension (or something along those lines) pulls it into peaks as the 2 halves are pulled away from each other.

I got a few of those things from my old HVAC job, they were sold as "Motor Master V" units. Only difference I see here is the IGBT modules were larger, multi-packs used for three-phase motors and the capacitors are a different color (blue vs. black, probably larger value too), but other than that it seems the control module is identical. Fun fact: There's a SPI-based Flash memory module hidden in that blue hunk of plastic.

There are a lot of "Phase Change" heat sink thermal transfer material. At room temp it is a solid but turns into a liquid at operating temps. You can get it in solid die-cut sheets or something like a stick of under-arm deodorant. It is easier to use in manufacturing while better handling any uneven gaps between the heat sink and whatever you are cooling. Most of the big cooling solution manufacturers have it including AAVID and Bergquist. This might be why you keep seeing powdery thermal compound.

@halsoy7 жыл бұрын
AvE, that moon surface pattern is probably just a result of varying surface/molecular tension inside the compound itself or simply as a result of air getting in and creating "channels" as you pull the two surfaces apart. The same thing happens on CPU/GPU heatsinks. There are videos on the tubes that show you different methods of applying thermal compound to said components, and demonstrating what happens by using an acrylic sheet as the contact surface. This shows the same surface patterns appear in every scenario as soon as you take them apart. Here's one such video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6q7fahngthgp5Y - One fun note is also that it appears the less viscous the compound is, the more pronounced the patterns get.

Sorry this is a weeee bit off topic it kind of holds to the same principle of that compressor Jig that you had set up so the drive would speed it up if you gave it a certain signal. what if you could do that with the digital readout on the lathe so when you’re feeding in your crossfeed it can speed up accordingly to have the consistent revolutions per minute to give a consistent cut as well as it not causing much vibration so you’re going at the right speed when you’re facing any material just a thought from another shop junkie.

Regarding heat sink compound - there is a good chance it is NOT silicone based. Many VFD makers are going non-silicone because the auto companies won't let silicone (of any kind) into their buildings. Silicone (even in minuscule amounts) can cause defects in painting processes. Auto makers live and die by their paint quality, so they've banned the stuff.

As a man (my woman said I am) who has worked with electronics and heatsinks, the pattern is caused by the viscosity, surface sticktivity, surface quality, and vibration, every heatsink that wasn't overapplied with Thermal Interface Material (Some call me..........TIM!!) will have this pattern, the ridges seen on one are generally the result of tiny surface imperfections and when you pull the two apart the material is pulled into those voids and whichever surface it has more adhesion to the TIM will develop the ridge of goo. The "burn in" period of most high end thermal compounds is both being phase changed into a liquid (polymer net just like multi-viscosity motor oil) that allows vibration to move the suspended particulates (diamond, carbon, silver, boron nitride, tiny rubies etc..) into the voids in the surface. www.arcticsilver.com/#

You can NOT check the diodes in the IGBTs like this. Not measuring anything between the Ts actualy does mean the IGBT brick is OK (or blown open respectively). Based on this single measurement you can't say if it is OK. If you want to measure the internal diodes, measure the T terminal against the DC bus + or - on the filter capacitors to check individual diodes!
@Sixta167 жыл бұрын
Measuring like so you will always have two diodes connected back to back. When blown, you will measure a short accross one of the IGBTs or sometimes even between phases. masters.donntu.org/2007/fema/rudenko_y/library/art9/fig5.gif
