your HR skit there at the end is darn near what happened to me a few days ago at work. Our "safety department" is having a new safety slogan contest and were in my departments office along with a few managers and some supervisors. With a dead serious face and an upbeat excited tone in my voice I told them I had the first place slogan and at the very least third place. The safety goons were all smiles urging me to share my slogan. Alright, here it is. "It does the job as safe as it can, or else it gets the hose again" . needless to say they were not very supportive of my slogan and for the next few days I had random people coming up to me asking me about my slogan or to tell some other random dingus they brought with them my slogan. Anyways, I would love one o' dem mugs there so I can stop sniffing the cat box in the mornings to wake up and start drinking coffee instead.

Cheers from another cold wasteland formally known as Sweden. Regarding how to wipe of the diaper rash creme: In confusers, we use acetone and coffee filters, since it leaves no residue on our CPUs. Also the proper way to apply the new paste is in a single line and then letting the assembly of the component press it out since that leaves no air pockets. On a CPU it can differ 20 degrees Science depending on if this is done correctly. Now as we say in Sweden, Have it nice!

It's actually been shown numerous times that application method has minimal effect on thermals, as well as applying too much does nothing but simply waste thermal compound! GPU manufacturers on high end graphics cards apply a LIBERAL amount, it's almost crazy how much they use but as more doesn't effect cooling, but too little can be critical they do this! (better safe than sorry). Over time and thermal cycling it all flattens down evenly with the pressure of the sync, and just oozes out the edges. I totally agree with your application adivce though a simple line of it down the middle horizontally would have been the way to go (same as the rice grain amount on cpu's).

I wouldn't recommend using acetone since it dissolves quite a few common plastics. Isopropyl is much better as a general cleaning solvent, including electronics, and it also doesn't leave residues. Didn't know about coffee filters, I'll have to try that out.

I used to work in IT. In the '90s, Sun server CPUs used to be shipped with a nifty 1/4" drive torque wrench (calibrated to 5 in-lbs). They were all metal construction, looked like something NASA made, and you could recalibrate them. I had a drawer full of them, but I only kept a few. I haven't actually _used_ any of them... but that's what having tool cabinets are for. HS Schmoo usually comes off with Acetone, but you don't want to be using your "Sunday" shop rag for cleaning it, as like NevrSieze it gets on everything in the damn shop. I'd like a mug, but watching your channel is entertainment enough. (I left Tronna for Switzerland in 1990, so I like hearin the Canajun every now and then.)

For large heatsinks like this pre-smearing the heatsink compound is always best in industrial applications where you want to get good consistency from batch to batch. We have certainly had no issues applying it this way in many years of manufacturing high power/heat devices. And when you remove a heatsink it always looks like when AvE pulled the original heat sink off (what he describes as the mars like surface).

Another subtle difference on Hitachi VFD vs others: heat sink channels closed with baffle plate, creating chimney effect cooling on heatsink, fans running or not. 2 hp model could be improved by just sheet of metal blocking backside airflow, creating chimneys of each pair of fins. Non-intuitive, but really werks!

There is a rule of thumb in chemistry that for every 10°C increase in temp, the rate of reaction doubles. If parts are degrading due to chemical wear (oxidation etc) then sounds like you might be right!

It is true that lower temperature will extend the life of most electronics as failure rates follow the arrhenius equation. The much quoted doubling in failure rate for every 10C rise in temperature starting at 20 C ambient. However, there are all sorts of caveats, such as ensuring that the temperature is not reduced below the dew point and mechanical parts have problems with lubricant failure at low temperature. However, modern electronics is very reliable, with electrolytic capacitors being arguably the must unreliable component. The real problem with modern electronics is if it contains software, as manufactures are using software to build obsolescence into equipment, usually by ensuring incompatibility with newer versions. A lot of perfectly good and working electronics is consigned to the scrap heap, simply because a computer operating system no longer supports the necessary drivers. This form of obsolescence is creeping into brown and white goods as well as automotive electronics. As internet connectivity is added to almost all electronics, manufactures are using software obsolescence to force consumers to constantly replace products.

This has probably been mentioned a dozen time already, but regardless, my $0.02 on the thermal stuff: With most chips, the header plate is massive, but you're just interested in where the specific die seats on it. Once you know (or guess) that, apply a pea sized strip along the die(s). The pressure when you crank the heatsink down on the plate is enough to spread it out. and get good enough thermal conductivity. I've seen tests with people using all sorts of crazy things for thermal conduction including peanut butter and all do fairly well. I'd look more at dissipating the heat on the heatsink itself (by a fan, etc) more than getting *perfect* thermal conductivity on the heatsink to the chip itself. All the thermal goo does is fill the pours in the top plate and heatsink surface to get better transfer.

What Kaz said.. specifically the last 2 sentences. I repair servo drives. All the thermal paste is doing is filling microscopic imperfections in the metal to allow better heat transfer. Too much is bad bc you're creating insulation. "A dab'll do ya" is the right way to go. And if it's dried up and flaky, it isn't working anymore.

I'm no electromagical surface enginerd and I've never dealt with a heat-sink that large. However, while laying TILE, you use a trowel to KEY the mortar. Keying in this way allows you to develop and ensure even DEPTH of adhesive (because the keyways/teeth/notches act almost like a go/no-go, while simultaneously removing excess at high spots and forcing material into low spots). It's essentially a non adjustable metered dispensing unit. The result is a fairly even coating to be squished into a given area. Just food for your big gorilla brains. And, I just read James Banana's comment about applying one thick single line while using the mechanical force of the components to spread it out - leaving no pockets of air. Pretty sure his method makes more sense... Edited to say - I don't think I have commented on your tube before (haha), however I have been watching your content for a long time and want to thank you for being real. I feel that, not only have I learned a lot from you, but you've also proven to me that I'm not weird for thinking the way that I do... Thanks AvE.

nam Sake I was thinking about this too. The difference is that, with tile, you want a full layer of adhesive. With a heatsink the thermal paste is only filling in microscopic cracks on each surface. You don't even have to use paste if you lap the surfaces together.

So I know in the build a PC community, there are all sorts of this that and the other ways of putting on thermal paste, with each one being morally superior to the next- but it made me think of laying tile and how to properly put down mortar so there are no air gaps and you get perfect coverage. Its not quite the same principle, though. With tile, you’ll accept air gaps to allow a tile to be in the same plane as the ones adjacent. Mounting to a heatsink, you want both surfaces as close as possible and any air gaps filled with something more conductive than air (down to a microscopic level). I say load her up, clamp her down, heat her up a few times, re-torque, heat her up a few more times, then scrape the excess schmoo off the sides.

I don't think I would like to have to explain that mug to the wife... Depending on surface finish the thinner the thermal paste the better. More metal to metal contact the better as the paste is meant to just fill in the voids on the surface. Most of the time these days everyone just slaps a dollop in there and squeezes her together.

Xylene and better yet, Toluene (if you can find them) will properly act as solvents for silicone oils. "White Spirits" sort of work, but....not that well.

Also try citric acid, theres a well know brand of cleaner that smells of fresh cut limes!!, for removing thermal compound from pc processors, think its made by alaska or akasar?( ive prob spelt both wrong!!lol!) Hope this help for some one. All the best mateys!

HellBilly Austin Arctic Silver thermal compound emulsifier. I use it a lot on my GPU/CPU and it cleans it up easily.

I just bought an America Rotary static phase converter for my little tiny hardinge milling machine. It's about a quarter of the mazak but it has a Bridgeport high speed c head and a horizontal spindle. It still has the scraping on the ways. I will be the most accurate 16 year old on the internet. The last tube of paste I got came with a cutout made in a credit card thickness template for the device, great way to control the amount being applied; in fact; the only way I can think of without the use of a roller likes when your applying gasket cement. I had a friend who went around a rocker cover with a tube of Hematite like he was applying toothpaste, torqued down nice an toit; and then lo and behold the little blighter leaked on start-up. It took me hours to remove the arches between the bolt holes.
