Yeah, it's gotta be damping or a literal spare. Odd choice for adding weight unless they expect a failure mode to be common enough to merit one of those. Edit: seems like preventing the pinion from disengaging and stripping makes the most sense from what I've seen posted. Cheers all!

The second ring gear is to take the side load of the pinion, without needing to get a pinion support in the center. It's a non precision answer to a problem that's usually solved with precision. :-) Those molded gears are probably DIIIIRTY cheap.

Pinion gear in your rear diff doesn't need a second ring gear. On this, there is a massive bearing just behind the pinion that is housed in the aluminum casing and then held in on the back side by that metal plate. I cant imagine the pinion is going to move, nor the ring gear. If it moves enough to jump teeth i'd imagine it would just break.

@@erat91 They're a lot shorter, with much stouter castings. By doing the double driven pinion, the only load you're really left worrying about is torque, and that's easy to handle with that plastic motor housing. Trying to get the bearings loaded, and inline, and "right" is less easy than one would like...

@@erat91 The Ford 9" uses a pinion pilot bearing and so do some of the Toyota axles to help with pinion deflection, also the pinion is held in place by two large tapered bearing that are preloaded in a fixed metal housing. The saw has two small roller bearings with no preload on them, the two ring gears spine in opposite directions and act as both countering mass and pinon control.

I just bought this tool, lol. Thanks AvE. I used it all day, cutting out drywall for a bathroom remodel. About 4 years ago, going from a truck full of brushed to brushless (remodeling tools of all kinds), I saw an immediate increase in torque and battery life over my previous tools. I gave my son my old tools so he could experiment to see if he liked that kind of stuff and I upgraded (so I was hoping) to brushless. In the process, I noticed the batts that came with brushless tools were better, having gauges and higher capacity and runtime than the cheaper brushed and multi-tool kits. As a result of all this, I now buy mostly the best option available, getting the best batts, another charger and a more efficient tool. I noticed over the last couple years which batteries lasted the longest, survived the cold and hot extremes (-35 to 125F) in my travels. The brushless run smoother, are quieter, cooler, and last longer (4 years into this observation). So, I'm sold on brushless, all major professional brands seam to be improving and outperforming former versions/technologies that I can see.

I'm not sure why or what but I can tell you the older brushed model will shake your teeth loose just holding it and running it not cutting anything just letting it run where the newer brushless has barely any vibration at all.

Having been involved in RC car racing for 30 years now I can tell you that brushless motors do a lot more work for the energy put in... They are so much better all around. Only maintenance is keeping them clean. The advancement from brushed motors with NiCad/NiMh to brushless with LiPo was a huge leap in performance. Also more fires, but that is mostly due to user error.

Trouble is with LiPo, is that the errors from the previous users can end up in a fire when YOU'RE using them. And man do those little brushless rotors for drones get a lot done. Brushed motors can't even begin to compare.

My guess is the 2nd opinion is there to help hold the gear in mesh and remove the side load similiar to a herringbone gear, just less expensive to make. It probably also provides a counter balnace to reduce vibrations if the are installed in opposite orientation. You could not pin them together because they rotate opposite directions.

The two halves not only spin in opposite directions but if you look closely as the shells come apart at the 12:30 mark, you will see that they are weighted oppositely as well. Reduces vibration by being counter balanced.

So, a quick review of the service parts list seems to answer all of the questions. The pinion does engage both spinamathings. There is a carefull clucking required to properly assemble this thing to achieve proper chooch. The left hand gear does indeed rotate opposite the right, but its purpose is to sling its counter balance weight opposite of the right side. This'll give the tird hoarders much less carple tunnel syndrome action. Just like a sewing machine, smooooth. Makes up for that xtra weight

Sorry but as a counter weight for balancing is concerned, it does not and can not counter the other at all angular positions, actually only 1 position of tangential moment is canceled.

Had mine for years now. Since the brushed one was stolen. Been used extensively on timber, steel and mostly cutting out plaster board. Does well in trimming in the garden too. First thing I noticed was the extra weight but secondly was the extra punch. On the switch, I find the tool does not hard start so full current is not made nor broken. I could be well wrong though.

@AVE what I have had fail on 3 these tools is the drive pins on the spindle gears for the output shaft. They break clean off and no replacements. Always a few months after the extended warranty ran out.

I wonder if that opposing crown gear is designed to reduce gear lash to near zero, because as we all know, a sloppy fit sometimes makes things slip out of alignment, and next thing you know--you're out of the pink and into the stink.

So the gears are weighted to balance the tool against the reciprocation, but the two ring gears counter-rotate. I think this has them cancelling their own, secondary orbital vibration at the same time that they're cancelling the vibration from the reciprocating bit.

I cut raw stock with the M18 FUEL sawzall almost every day. Hot suppers are a regular occurrence. I have no problem serving up a roast fest for the M12 Hackzall if you need.

We use these almost daily for underground pool pipe repair, they old ones wouldn't last 2 months because of the wet conditions we used them in. The new ones haven't failed yet, other than the blade holder/release seizing up

I have one of these, and tore it down, just because you made it look like good fun. Couple of thing I noticed. 1. That copper spring thing, makes the safety switch clicky, but I watch your vids long enough to know you probably toss it to the art bin anyway. 2. Its interesting that Milfaukees says, that the FUEL brushless motors are " Engineered uniquely for each tool", yet this one has a bi directional fan. Guess that 6x longer life was good enough. 3. Here in Hungary, we are still paying double the price for the FUEL compared to the brushed one.

Ive had both and gave my brother the brushed one to cut off exhausts and whatnot. I use the fuel daily to cut pvc and other plastic piping. It'll cut wood. But it'll need a really good blade and a battery on the charger. It's got its pluses. I have an m18 sawzall for heavier duty stuff and im happy with it.

I bought one of these because they are light, for cutting into drywall for electrical boxes, and being light makes it easier to use with one hand. I might buy a non fuel version for this reason. When I am standing on a ladder and trying to cut into a ceiling, weight is a premium. In any event I have used and abused this tool for light tree trimming and I have not had too much trouble. I bought a super sawzall for tree trimming and I have to say I think the collet that holds the blades in is the biggest point of failure. With more power, it is easier to break blades. The thicker blades are very hard to remove if you snap the retaining piece in the collet when you brake a blade. Taking apart this collet, is not too bad, but putting it back together is a pita, especially with one hand. And yes I know, I should buy a chainsaw, but again with one hand, they are a handful.

Of all the hot suppers I've fed my m12 brushed. The gears are getting sloppy but it still chops everything I ask of it, every day. I chose the brushed for the smaller size. As its cut countless tons of drywall and wood it'll die soon and I'll prob get the brushless version. Hopefully it's more skookem though the brushed version def didn't disappoint. Great little tool

On the colour thing, which has been mentioned a few times, I don't think they're really doing anything different. I've got a number of Milwaukee tools ranging in age and usage levels, and they start out pretty bright red, and fade to something like maroon. It's a pretty significant change in colour.

I've had one of those M12 Fuel Hacksaws for about a year, and use it on a daily basis to cut copper, PVC and the like. I haven't noticed any real fatigue from the weight of the tool compared to the using a regular M12 Hacksaw in a similar way. Now, the same can't be said for the M18 Fuel Hacksaw with a 5 or 6 amp battery on it though; that MFer has some weight to it.

Turd Herder here the brushed version was my most loved tool when i got it. cheap, light, does a good job, but ultimately wears out quick was i using it to hard yes but it was the best darn drywall saw i ever owned due to the fact that it would bind up on anything i shouldn't cut. got the m18 fuel before the 12v got rid of the 12v about 2 months later as if i needed the power i would just use the m18 but the selling point from the Milwaukee rep was that they made it more water resistant

I have the fuel M18 version I used it to cut down my neighbors wattle tree while they were on holidays. I left a note in their mailbox saying it was removed by council because of risk to powerlines. Like the M12 here the M18 fuel is quite a bit bigger and heavier than the non-fuel model.

I'm sure they could've figured out a simpler way to deal with the side loading of the pinion on the crown gear. The crown gears are balanced and if I had to guess, I'd theorize that the extra gear is there to provide an equal amount of offset balancing on either side of the reciprocating shaft.

Yes , you are correct . Us, turd herders did have alot of issues with the first iteration. They frequently seized up and then send up the tiniest smoke offering to the Tim the tool man gods. The 20 volt varients don't don't poo the bed nearly as frequently.

I didnt finish the video so sorry if you covered this. If the bevel gears were connected with the crank pin the pinion wouldnt turn. So my guess is that extra gear is in there for either added mass or for vibration dampening by harmonics or magic, however the hell it works.

Mines been sitting in the bottom of a bag since christmas of 2016. Thing had a hard time cutting 1/2" chip board, you know, the stuff you can break a chunk off of with your bare mitts. Mind, it was the small 12v battery but even still, I couldn't imagine what was successfully getting cut with it. Maybe something was dickered from the get go, be glad to send it up North.

I think the second ring gear provides that extra bit of inertia to keep the saw from bogging and coming to a stop, blowing those MOSFETs. (In addition to keeping the pinion gear solidly enmeshed). Double the rotational mass, double the kinetic energy.

On top of others comments, I believe that the second ring gear is also for BALANCING. With equal weight on each side of the crank instead of on a single side, it should conceivably be 'perfectly' balanced in the wibble-wobble side-to-side torque action that off-center flywheels/balance wheels/shafts can create at time. Old design vs new design held in each hand wide open - any difference in the 'hand fatigue' metric?

I had the same thought as radradroadbot, that the bevel crownwheels run counter to each other, however, the greater rotating mass will give more inertia and reduce stalling in use. Also as you mention they will prevent the pinion pushing away from the crownwheel at high torque.

The second gear seems to be just functioning as an extension of the thrust bearing properties provided by the other side of the housing to maintain contact with the drive gear and prevent gear skip & pop out.

The vias under the chip could be for interference suppression -- having a solid ground plane makes good protection but increases capacitance. Having the vias reduces that capacitance and probably increases emc compliance.

The second ring gear supports the motor shaft and bearings, which can be lighter if not side loaded (maybe that is thrust, not sure). In a different application you could also put a brake on the back gear, or engage it to the output to reverse direction, but not needed for a saw. Gear tooth wear in this application is negligible (other stuff will go out first), smooth running flywheel is a bonus. Scotch yoke on a roller bearing is better than a crank.

I believe the second crown gear it there for your second guess, support. It protects the drive gear from hopping gears under much more torque produced by the brushless motor.

The trigger doesn't have to make and brake the entire current, only pass the entire current at full speed. It only has to make or brake a chopped up bit of DC.... maybe you are right, is this chopped up amount of DC at full current? I guess the energy of this short pulse of dc would have a less of a damaging effect to a set of contacts as a sustained amperage start.

He fuel marquee indicates that it is a newer model using a brushless motor. But you are correct that are usually heavier duty as well. I know they came out with a new brushless fuel ratchet and it also got a lot bigger (and had double the torque as well)

Bldc Vs brushes is like NiCad Vs Lipo (talking RC rock crawler)45min /charge Vs 2hr/charge grunting on the rocks. Having more power means less time cutting. Being a carpenter, i want to rip through my material as quick as possible. Plus, most normal reciprocal saws are fairly weighty and even this larger hacksawzall would be lighter than them, sooo if this thing has fairly comparative cutting power, then it would be great tool to buy..

Thanks for this review. I was looking at this very tool and the moment you put it on the scale I decided Nope. I'm not completely sold on the big brushless movement. I had a brushed Makita cordless 1/2" drill that gave up the ghost after three years of hard use. I replaced it with the brushless model with the thinking being that brushless motors were better for my model airplanes they have to be better for tools. I was mistaken. Where the brushed motor could grunt it's way through starting a 1/2" auger bit and get up to running speed the brushless drill would just torque out and stop. Sucks when it torques out in the middle of a hole and you have to borrow a Ryobi drill to finish the hole.

It’s a big heavy spinning gear - adding a second that spins in the opposite direction reduces precession. Keeps it from bucking in your hand as much as it spins up. Think of it like the Russian helicopters with coax rotors that spin in opposite directions.

I bet both of those pinion gears are driven, and the second is also (aside from managing axial load as Nerobro stated) to provide a little more balancing mass to counteract the reciprocation of the poking end. Keep the tool from making your hands all tingly. Maybe

The two gears have counterweights to ballance them and also the pistonthingy. the two counter rotating masses wold also eliminate gyroscopic efekts that would be my guess on this. Nice Video as always I enjoyed it:)

The idling crown gear keeps the pinion from jumping the track, lowering the lateral force on the bearing.

Surely the two crown gears will be going in opposite directions? As the bottom one moves to the left, the top one will move to the right. Only the driven one will lose teeth in the event of a bad stall, so they could probably just be swapped over in an emergency.

I have repaired many of these. Only ever had to replace failed electronics. Edit: Scratch that. I did have to replace one motor (brushes worn out).

The case becomes the support frame with both crown gears compressed onto the pinion. It makes it stall tolerant, puts more omph in the back and forthing maybe makes it more durable too?

yeah i was disappointed with makita when you reviled the bearing slop on the dingus end but i ride my makita hard and put her away wet and every chance i get; best cordless 1/4 impact ive ever had and the 3ah battery must think its 6 because it never dies

WOW just came across your channel LOVE IT!! i will not put a brush-less in these hands Milwaukee anyways. Vibration is 10x times worse; a little tickle in the pickle is nice but hated after awhile. The high pitch sound makes me sick, then there is the frequency off gassing that affects everything'; put a filter on it.

The extra crown gear provides more of a flywheel effect (torque), and reduces axial load on the pinion gear.

the second gear gives even more counter balance to the reciprocating shaft, thereby increasing the comfort to the user. it doesn't matter that it spins in the opposite direction. a good experiment would be to reassemble the gearbox with the 2nd gear 180 degrees out of phase with the driven gear--you will feel more vibration. You might want to compare how much vibration the FUEL has to the brushed.

It appears to be assembled 180 out for counterbalance, going 90 out might be interesting though, or put it in phase with the drive gear. But the reason its there is to take side load off the pinion. It must be cheaper to just reprint the gear they already designed.

Definitely want to see how that one sounds running at super slow speed, like barely getting the thing to turn. I was given one a few months ago and it sounds like its full of marbles at slow speeds, but runs fine in normal operation. Does what I wanted it to do so far, running the full length demolition blades through 2x4's and other dead tree carcass type shenanigans, as well as cutting pipe quick and dirty in hard to reach spots. Beats beating off with a dull hacksaw in those regards.
