세계에서 다섯번째이고 국내에서는 가장 긴 충남 보령해저터널이 개통되었다.
기존에 국내 최장이었던 인천북항해저터널(5.46km)보다 1.5km가량 길다.
보령해저터널은 해저면으로부터 55m, 해수면으로부터는 80m에 위치해서 국내 터널중 가장 깊다.
충남 보령해저터널이 개통되어 대천항과 원산도, 태안 안면도가 하나의 도로로 연결되어 서해안 관광에 획기적인 변화가 예상된다.
터널 총 길이가 6.9km라고 한다.
바다밑에 만들어져서 만일의 사고에 대비한 안전설비에 가장 큰 신경을 썼다고한다.
터널 안으로 유입된 물은 수심 80m지점에 모여서 바다로 배출된다.
터널 외부로 유독가스를 내보내기 위해 양방향으로 84개의 시설이 설치됐고, 200m 간격으로 CCTV도 설치하여 상시 모니터링이 가능하다.
원산안면대교를 이용하면 보령과 태안은 차로 1시간30분 걸리던 이동거리가 단 10분으로 줄었다.

Oh wow this is a long tunnel to drive my gosh I'm sure that's fun. But I get nervous for a long time driving in the tunnel actually I'm not comfortable after all.
