"Use Your Eyes" is a police training film produced by the Alhambra Police Department, California, in 1970. It is intended to demonstrate to police officers how to search a residence for evidence of marijuana use, and what rights they have to search the property once certain prima facia evidence is established.

Close-up the marijuana, which is of low-grade ‘unmanicured’ quality . A pinch taken and observed. Man sniffs this pinch. We then see a close-up on manicured marijuana (7:27-8:11). We see a block of unmanicured marijuana, wrapped in tinfoil. Bunches are places in an adjacent box and stirred to knock the buds from the stems. The stalks are examined in isolation. Manicured marijuana then taken and placed in a bag (8:12-9:21). Three pipes are examined. The first two are regular tobacco pipes, the third a metal pipe with resin build-up on inside of the bowl (9:22-10:06). We see a series of water pipes (10:07-10:29). Shots of a series of small containers. A small block of hashish is examined, then some small flakes are broken off by a knife (10:30-11:19). We see a small square of tin foil. This pressed into a homemade wooden pipe and holes punctured, the cone is filled with hashish. We see a man smoking the pipe (11:20-12:03). Close up on a searching pair of eyes scanning around. Title card and credits overlaid. Background image changes to drug paraphernalia before fading to black (12:05-13:03).

I worked in law enforcement and prosecution and I know officers from back in the 1990s that would have dumped that mess out on the side of the road and said "son go home; and stay away from fake weed." My other "hobby" is using "Google News Archive" to read really old news stories (and even ads) and then use Google Maps to see if the buildings mentioned are still around. Addictive as hell! I even found the apartment building I once lived in (an old run-down heap, cause..I'm cheap and poor) in a real estate ad from 1904 describing the NEW "flats" as having all of the LATEST, like gas AND electric lighting! and advanced MODERN things like HOT water!).

You COULD do the same thing,but tracing a news article AND it's modern equivalent map could take hours. (Manually going through microfilm!). now it's Seconds! Last time I knew someone purchasing a truckload (compressed block) of "Moroccan" grass full of stems and seed was a clueless guy that got ripped off by an Albanian gypsy fifteen years ago. That "Moroccan" crude is the stuff they make hashish off, it's far too weak to smoke. Trying to import this is ludicrous, no one wants to buy that..

But there is a lot of gypsy behavior going on, I heard they often roll fresh buds in ground glass to increase weight, or press the hashish for hashish oil then sell the post-pressed cake. That is why you always must heat the hash to see the oil boil before buying.

This is even funnier when you realize that that the only reason pot is about 100X more potent now is because of the ban on pot back then. Pot to hash is like beer to whiskey during Prohibition. Seriously the old school stuff was nothing compared to what the kids are smoking today. It's legal here but I'm too old to smoke much any more. It's an occasional thing for me.

I was at UCLA all through the sixties and into 1970 when this was filmed. I knew some LAPD cops. They NEVER sent uniformed patrol officers in a marked cruiser out on a narcotics call at any private, non-hostile residence. They sent plain clothes types, or more likely Narcotics Bureau detectives in a civvy unit! And who's the dumb broad who let's these Dick Tracy types come right in, with all that junk leaving sitting on the COFFEE TABLE! Even in the sixties and seventies, the cops did know about warrants! The whole thing has an Alice in Weedland quality to it, more believable if it were set in the twenties or thirties, not fifty years later.

Something this video says at the beginning is highly interesting to me. It says _any time you enter a home, no matter the reason,_ always be looking around for evidence of drug offenses. And once you get a hint something might possibly be 'off', it tells you to tip your hand and push things to the limit then and there. _Those cookie jars, baking canisters and Tupperware dishes are all guilty. Ransack them: it's your duty!_ Did they make similar videos instructing to _always_ discreetly scan a residence for evidence the dweller had committed other sorts of crime? I suspect not. And can you imagine what imbeciles officers would look like for upending some blameless soul's living space, because of a clip used to hold a needle during heat-sterilization before it lanced a blister?

I used to hand roll (tobacco) cigarettes. They LOOKED like "joints" (I was not great at it, but hey. I was BROKE) Only one time was I questioned by a cop (I was smoking one at a bus stop, circa 1981.) He seemed kind of disappointed that it was actually in fact...Tobacco! I have rediscovered the "art" of "rolling my own" (tobacco) cigs, Now we have pre-made "tubes" and injection machines. Much better! P.S.
