Just be aware you may need to turn that mode back off again if the framerate begins to stutter. I'm playing on an OLED and for the most part had no issues until one particular late game battle, where the framerate got so bad it was making me miss jumps/landings. Turned "unleash the beast" mode off and had no issues again.

was a bit disappointed with the original review of this on the site, it's intentionally a love letter to jet set because sega won't bring the series back. This fixes so much of the original, being able to get of your skates, attacking police now and stringing together combos is amazing . the story is surprisingly in-depth and great too.

I think the same. This game is kinda meant for other JSRF or JSR fans. I was afraid it was going to be a knockoff but it's the real deal and as you say, it fixes and improves on JSRF. I think their attitude is like, let's image we're making the third game. BUT, this game has it's on personality and the little things they added, let's you know that the devs wanted to show other aspects they grew up with.

Idk I’m going to have to disagree with some of the criticisms of unoriginality. BRC brings a lot of its own stuff to the table with the move-styles and the way they reworked mechanics, all whilst staying true to the concept of love. Imo it’s an unfair criticism to put to put the game down for being exactly what it set out to be, a spiritual successor to JSRF, and it does that perfectly. Capturing the essence of what made the JSR games so great, distilling it and delving it in a modern format with its own accoutrements. If it had been more original it could’ve easily strayed too far and not been what we wanted (see Hover revolt of gamers), and while that can be good of in an of itself it means we got something that gives familiarity to JSR rather than a new JSR.

More of an 8 than a 7. The game set out to do exactly what it was made to do and fill in the void for a new JSR. The cons mentioned are rather unfounded or minute if you have played either JSR or JSRF recently.

I highly disagree with the notion that this simply lives in jet set’s shadow, it’s a very different game, I’m not sure when the last time you played jet set radio but beyond the tagging and core structure, everything feels different. It takes just as much from Tony hawk as jet set, combining and tricks are much more important, fun and integral to the gameplay. The levels are much larger than even jsrf because movement is completely different and faster paced. This is better than a jet set radio sequel, it clearly takes inspiration from JSR but it’s a better game than either JSR or JSRF, unless you’re living entirely through nostalgia goggles.

I love JSR and JSRF and grew up playing those. And this game is not only the real deal. it's the best one of the bunch. Some reviewers seem to only have played the other ones very little or not recently rnough to completion because JSR heads online are loving this game. Everyone else seems like they don't get it and comment on very superfical stuff or criticise things that were part of JSR as it were a new complaint. It's just makes me think they didn't really spend their lives with those other games to see how great BRC is. You can even feel it has a different personality than those other ones.

Ngl this review was a miss. BRC is a serious 8 to 9/10 From someone who plays JSR and JSRF al.ost every year, this game was not JSR but more. It was incredibly similar but more mechanical and more options for traversal. Story took a forefront. BRC is so good because for people like me I get to feel that magic all over again for the first time. And for younger people, it's a great way to experience this sort of game for your first time and show you why it's such a beloved title. ❤

I don't remember if I knew about this game 3 years ago, when it was first announced, or merely two years ago. But I DO remember I was absolutely IMPRESSED and excited about this game. A JSR inspired indie game WITH Hideki Naganuma's JSR vibes on it? I WANT IT! I couldn't stop watching in loop that first teaser that was INCREDIBLE! Fastforward to the August 18th, I got to play the game first hand and I absolutely loved it for what it is: a cool homage to one of the most iconic games in the history, and how it stands out on its own rights. To me, BRC is not a "sequel" to the Jet Set Radio franchise, but one inspired by it (not as heavily, according to one of the developers) that takes the good bits and expands upon it. There's a whole new world, lore and franchise to explore in Bomb Rush Cyberfunk while we, Jet Set Radio fans, enjoy the things we loved the most of JSR in a brand new, stylish and freshly born franchise I HOPE to see more of in the future. Thanks for the review guys! 🙌 P.S.: Make sure to check every corner of the stages, as there might be more things to find that we're aware of.

The thing that doesn’t come up when discussing JSR (which I discovered for myself on playing it for the first time earlier this year) is that the gameplay and difficulty curve have serious problems. Like some sloppy controls are a minor issue in the beginning, but grow to become the biggest challenge to finishing the game as later levels challenge you to do more in less time. (Also the police and enemy escalation eventually gets out of hand). The game isn’t balanced, simply put. BRC has some balancing problems of its own, but it’s infinitely better than trying to play JSR today.
@lowtech42
@lowtech42 Жыл бұрын
I would have to give it an 8/10 or a few decimal points higher. The story alone is FAR better than it has any right to be, without spoiling anything. There's plenty of twists and turns that make it leagues better than JSR, and essentially gives it legs to stand on its own. This whole game feels like the "JSR(F) spiritual sequel" angle was just to get a foot in the door for Team Reptile to deliver an exciting and trippy story, a memorable world and characters, and overall an experience that plays like a mixtape/love letter to the 00s. JSR diehards need to get this without question, but everyone else on steam/switch should too. the steam version might be better lowkey because of the achievements

While like every other the game BRC does have its shortcomings, they’re more like minor annoyances that wouldn’t bug you for more than 10 seconds. The thing this reviewer says is the biggest negative is actually the game's biggest selling point. It fills the void for people who don't want to be stuck waiting for a Jet Set Radio 3 that might never happen. In fact, with extreme sports games in general just about dead, this game proves they still have some life left. Now, if only someone could make a spiritual successor for Darkstalkers and fill my next biggest gaming void.

If you really think that Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a copy paste of Jet Set Radio with minimal changes, you have not played JSR. The game structure is completely different, story is told completely differently, controls are leaps and bounds ahead of JSR. You could say it's very similar to JSRF, sure, but so what? The entire selling point of this game is to be a spiritual successor to that game, so why knock down points for a game achieving it's goal? I would agree if we had a billion of these games and then this was too similar, but it's been two decades since JSRF. I think it's okay to make a game similar to one that hasnt been made in over 20 years.
@nicked_fenyx

This is an amazing game, but it's not fair to criticize it for being similar to JSR, as that's what the game set out to be. That said, where I and many others I've seen *do* feel the game deserves more criticism is the way the heat system (the system that makes cops mad at you) is implemented. This game desperately needs an option to turn that system off, even if it were only made available after beating the main story. It's not that fighting the cops in this game is hard. It's just annoying. They literally start chasing you after one single tag is made. From there, a few more tags and things escalate to choppers and snipers and all kinds of stuff. That's incredibly annoying when I just want to chill and hit up some tags. I know you can go into a toilet stall to change outfits and reset your heat rating, but 1. having to do that after every single tag is as annoying as the cops themselves, and 2. you can't use the same stall twice in a row, which means you often have to alternate between stalls that may be all the way across the map from each other. I've seen enough people complain about this online to know it's definitely not just me. I really hope the devs will listen and perhaps add in a free patch with an option to disable the heat system entirely for those who want to do so. As it is, I probably won't bother completing all the maps. I finished the story, and absolutely adore the overall mechanics and movement in the game. I could easily sink dozens more hours into this game... if only the heat system weren't a constant annoyance.

It feels like a hit, and miss with its soundtrack. It stays way too safe with hip-hop, and some electronic. That would be fun. Tagging enough spots and getting high scores gets points to unlock new moves to get to new spots and repeat the process. Carrots are good.

It’s weird none of the reviews I’ve seen or read mention the need of quick turn around move, the fact that you can’t straight the camera faster, that taking off your wheels is amazing for platforming. I guess in modern gaming they make such a fuzz over frame drops but not actual gameplay mechanics improvements or problems. I don’t why this game compared to JSR when BRC is more of a spiritual sequel to JSRF. I lve JSR but JSRF is pretty distinct from the first game.

Also the trick system adds a lot to the fun of traversing the city and there’s score you can check for your high score tricks in the pause menu.

@@samuelturner6076 I feel the quick turn thing is very helpful when you need to stop abruptly or to turn around abruptly. I have to like take off my skates or something to get a similar effect.
@samuelturner6076
@samuelturner6076 Жыл бұрын
@@ajzn97 It is helpful and as you said you can achieve it by taking of your skates, but the whole reason why it’s only something for on foot travel is because that’s the only method of travel that would work with. You can’t do an instant 180 or even 90 degree turn on rollerblades, a bike or a skateboard, it’s physically impossible. Instead learning how to make tight and precise turns whilst on your gear whilst going at ludicrous speeds is the point of the game. It’s not just a regular platformer, it’s a fast paced platformer that demands speed and skill if you want to be able to do the high leve challenges.
@ajzn97
@ajzn97 Жыл бұрын
@@samuelturner6076 Yeah, I mean. I actually find this game much easier than JSRF because you can take off your skates easily when doing the platforming because of how imprecise it was in JSRF when you were in similar situations. But I miss the sharp turn/sharp stop mechanic from JSRF and JSR especially when you're going the wrong direction or need to restart a combo or two avoid running or falling into things. It was easier to do tigher turns in those games because that was one of the essencial skills.

I'm sorta worried for this game when the Jet Set Radio reboot inevitably comes out. Especially since it like... Has the style it did before only on a bigger budget. The gameplay here may be different but it could've done a better job being unique with its concept.

Dude jsr has been gone for 20 years now and JSRF is not easily accessible. Sega have done nothing with the ip and seemingly don't care about other devs making similar types of games. Bomb rush fills a void that fans have been craving for a long ass time

One thing this game does worse than JSR is tagging fluidity. When you painted over a small tag in JSR, you could just keep going but in this game a small cutscene plays. It doesn't seem like much at first but it gets annoying over time. In a stretch with smaller tags, you want to paint over them in JSR but in BRC you want to just pass by them if you can. It disrespects your time to show how "cool" the game is. If it's once every time you load a map, I can understand that. But it's every tag. You also got punished in JSR if you took too long tagging something, like you're being chased by the police or something. Here, everyone has to patiently wait while you dance and paint before running at full speed again, like an episode of Tom and Jerry. There's no sort of challenge when it comes to tagging because time stops, which was intentionally not present in JSR. I don't own the game myself but I've read a review that the BMX/Board/Skates have no mechanical difference and that they're purely visual. If anyone can confirm or deny this, please do. I don't want my opinion muddied by false info. I'll respond like they've done this, though. That's a really bad choice. If you're going to make the different "vehicles" a selling point, make them distinct mechanically. Doesn't make or break the game but it does feel a bit misleading to me, personally. Even Mario Sunshine gave you 3 different "difficulties", for like 2 missions! The bikes are the slowest but have the most handling. Using a boost instead lifts them up into the air and can be done once after a jump. if you jump into a wall, you'll ride up it for a while. This is so beginner players can get the basics down without having to worry about falling down a large gap. Also good for areas with sharp corners or high walls. Boards are an all-round class, average speed and control, and the boost gives them a bonus multiplier. No air movement, but good for fighting rivals. And Skates are the fastest but hardest to control and their boost is a straight-forward boost, like in the current game. Designed for experts at the game, rewarding you with faster clears if you can deal with the handling. Of course, these are examples, but there's plenty you can do with this general idea of differentiating the gameplay even with smaller tweaks.

I’ve had tears of the kingdom crash on me, and some of the loading screens in TotK are painful. TotK is the highest rated game ever. And I play on an oled with less than 2500hrs on it. If it is basically jet set 2.0 then that should add points, not remove it. Not to mention that 100% of all the content is a one time purchase of $29.99. Just these facts alone should be a 9.0/10

This is the stupidest question in human history. Yes, it's worth it. This game was made for people who loved the game loop of jet grind and doesn't overstay its welcome. The devs even said that the game isn't really ment to be replayed, it's an experience you play once and move on.

the game looks overly floaty and lacks the charm of JGR or JSRF. Would be cool if someone took the scale and world of CyberPunk 2077 and the style of JSRF and created something a little more deep and meaningful.

I would not reccomend this game on switch as it stands. The "unleash the beast" mode rarely ever hits 60 and for me usually fluctuated rapidly between 40-55, which caused me to get motion sick (something that rarely ever happens because my favorite genre is third person platformers and i have a good visual immunity) I think 60 is necessary for such a movement intensive game, and i think given the low-poly artstyle, its pretty aggregious that switch cant hold it consistently. On the other hand, the game is currently digital only on all platforms. I think indie games are worth getting on switch because physical carts will last for years and years, as evidenced by all of Nintendo's older cart based systems. But if you can only get this game digitally, just get it on steam or wait for it to come out on PS4/5 or Xbox. The Steam deck can get a good 60fps out of this game too if you want it portably. TL;DR 60 fps is horribly inconsistent, and the game is digital only. Pass on Switch, purchase on steam or other consoles.
