He's actually making an important point: if human labor can be almost entirely replaced by AI and associated robots, that will necessitate a fundamental restructuring of how we distribute goods and services. I'm sure I'd disagree with this CEO as to the solution (IMHO it obviously has to be socialist in nature), but he accurately states the potential problem before us. All that being said, as a researcher in a related field, I think he is full of shit and doesn't actually believe AI will be anywhere near that capable in 2 years. > All that being said, as a researcher in a related field, I think he is full of shit and doesn't actually believe AI will be anywhere near that capable in 2 years You are very, incredibly wrong. He does believe that. Anyone who's taken a second to see where things are would consider it to be at least feasible. The datacenters coming online this year are reported to be ~100k GB200's. At 480 GB per chip, that's 48,000,000,000,000,000 bytes of memory in the network. At a very conservatively high model of the human brain that has 1,000 trillion synapses in it, that leaves 48 bytes per synapse. I think these things will be approximately human scale, running at gigahertz frequencies. You only have to take two seconds to think of how many different domains they could optimize across with 80x the scale of GPT-4's datacenter. He's not the only AI researcher whose timelines have collapsed to almost nothing. These guys are *not* working with the $3,000 budget and two consumer grade GPU's you've got on hand.
@GraphiteBlimp279 күн бұрын
I came to the comments to make this point. Listening to the guy, I found not much to disagree with. I don’t agree with pushing AI so much especially as quickly as we have, but considering how many disparate groups has been embracing it I think it’s pretty much inevitable. He is making an important point, one that Andrew Yang (and I’m sure Bernie) saw early and wanted to prepare for. I think this is an important conversation to start happening. This could be the moment that liberates us from our previous economic model and starts us on the path for a Star Trek like future or turns it into Bladerunner. AI could even optimize human resource distribution and avert climate change… I see the potential. However I also see the potential for us to be subjugated under a ruling class that is indifferent which appears to be the trajectory given the recent US administration.

I'm an AI/ML Engineer, been doing this professionally for going on six years. AI/ML absolutely will transform society. And it could be a very good thing. Drug discovery, discovering new laws of physics, climate simulation, etc. AI/ML could enable us to build a more equitable / fair society, one where humans work less while maintaining their current quality of life. It could be used as a great equalizer when it comes to hard skills, enabling anyone to jump into anything and get going quickly. I personally use AI/ML when writing code, or brainstorming creative writing, etc. That being said, none of that is what businesses are interested in. They want this stuff to replace people. It's disheartening to hear that tech companies, for instance, are going to stop hiring junior developers. Or that they're going to develop tools to reduce the number of engineers they have on staff. The only solution to that glaring problem is UBI and Unionization. That's it. No amount of regulation or taxation, etc is going to stop this, precisely because the technology has opened pandora's box. We're currently in a race to the bottom of the barrel with this. I'm beside myself most days. I don't know what I can outside of standing on the right side of history with all this. It's very depressing.

Well, I'm a communist, so I’m looking at this differently. We are currently stuck in middle-stage capitalism. The system must collapse in some way for us to move beyond it. What terrifies me isn’t AI in and of itself; what terrifies me is the possibility of tech feudalism, where tech oligarchs essentially control the world by dominating the superintelligence that runs it. This is one of the reasons we must push aggressively for open-sourcing AI as much as possible-similar to OpenAI’s original mission. It might turn out that none or only some of what they predict will come to pass. However, because so many people believe it is possible, they will attempt it, and there’s no way to stop them. It’s delusional to think the genie can be put back in the bottle. Both corporations and nation-states are now entrenched in an AI arms race. The United States can pass whatever laws it wants to try to limit this, but capital is mobile, and it will easily flow to other nations that welcome it with open arms. Our only hope is that all of them fail. When we eventually achieve AGI, superintelligence, or whatever emerges, it must be something no single group of people can easily control. The more democratized AI is, the better. The more decentralized control over AI becomes, the better. …But whatever is coming is coming, whether we want it or not. The only thing that could stop it is if the technology fails to meet their expectations.
@cjr-en4wr10 күн бұрын
i agree with you, but the theory/math behind it is well published - anyone can build/train models, its easy. people calling for regulation are predictably doing the bidding of the establishment. @cjr-en4wr Exactly. OpenAI is calling for regulation because they are afraid of losing their market advantage. Meanwhile, China has already released Deepseek-R1, which is completely open-sourced and either on par with or outperforms OpenAI's o1 model. The entire hope behind OpenAI’s Stargate initiative is that by throwing vast amounts of money at the remaining challenges, they will be able to soar so far ahead of everyone else that no one can catch up. This is why I believe Kyle and Krystal are misreading the situation. They’re about a year or so behind in understanding where things currently stand, and the situation is only accelerating. At this point, there’s too much momentum and too much at stake on all sides. It’s that very momentum driving things forward now, and no one-neither individuals nor nation-states-has the ability to stop it. All it takes is one nation-state willing to open its doors, and that is where the capital will flow. There’s no way out now but forward. We can’t put the genie back in the bottle, but there’s still hope that we can shape the future.

The problem isn't necessarily that A.I. will replace workers; this should be applauded as an achievement for humanity. The problem is that those in power are going to use this technology not to better society, but to instead enrich themselves to a point of themselves and those that maintain the system being the only lords left in a world of unemployed peasants who will struggle to gather their own resources if our current economic system is maintained or corrupted even further. Techno-feudalism as it were. If we take this technology seriously and can't stop its implementation, then the only hope we have is to completely rethink what an economy even is, and form a new political structure that is able to take that into account. However, this will not be done peacefully if these people have their way, and they know this. Though, perhaps its only the smarter ones that can see it, as I believe the current oligarchies believe themselves to be above the dangers that they are willingly setting up for everyone, themselves included. If these people continue there blind absorption of capital and politics, the world will soon find itself in the middle of a great tragedy that will reshape our fundamental understanding of human civilization, light years beyond the world wars.

Krystal it's not Google, I mean maybe former Google employees but Dario was formerly OpenAI (also Google) and if anything they are getting most funding through Amazon. Oddly whenever I hear Dario speak he talks about "race to the top" and trying to implement safety with AI. Anthropic has the best coding model for coders and Kyle it's not goofy pictures it's a very useful tool. I think you guys are viewing this from your perspective. Anthropic is probably the best of the AI players right now. Anyway I agree there's a real danger but just wanted to say that I think you're downplaying the race and how some of the contestants are clearly more ethical than others.
