They are bumble bees - one particular species of bumbles. Bees have amazing variety! Honey bees have only 3 different species if I remember correctly, but bumble bees and solitary bees have hundreds each! Anything named with "bombus" is a bumble. :)

Is it possible to raise the bee box and it produces a lot of honey
@Torthrodhel3 жыл бұрын
You can get honey from types of bee besides honey bees, but it would risk harm to them. Honey bees are known as honey bees because they are uniquely organised into much bigger colonies (in the many thousands), and make a lot of spare honey at any point. That's why it's okay to take it, because they have lots in reserve and won't run out. In contrast, bumble bees run much smaller colonies (in the many hundreds) and only tend to produce honey as they need it. They don't have enough in reserve to survive it being taken from them.

Do mated queens return to nest or leave right after mating flight?
@CeesvanHengstum2 жыл бұрын
I think most return. When they leave the nest for hibernation you see them fly away with a heavy abdomen

Why so many Queens?
@Torthrodhel2 жыл бұрын
A queen can control whether a hormone is released or not when she gives birth to a brood. One way, only females are born, and are all workers. The other way, both females and males are born - the males are drones, and the females are new queens. New queens are just as big as old queens, and all emerge at the same time. They are fed more in the larval state, which is why they are bigger. They do stay in the nest for a little bit, before going to seek out drones for courtship, and then hibernate before starting a new nest after winter.

@Torthrodhel3 жыл бұрын
With bumble bees, the queen looks much similar to the workers and drones, just bigger. You often see queens flying around earlier on in the year looking for a nest site to inhabit, before they lay a brood of workers.

White Tailed yes..... Terrestris is Buff tailed.... 18,000 colonys are imported into the UK each year... sadly bringing a deadly pest Protozoan that infects their gut. Same imported to Chile Used for soft fruit pollination (toms, cucumbers etc) killing their local Bumbus Dahlbomi the largest bumble bee in the world 40mm... add in the huge wings and hence its called the flying mouse/mice
