A potential idea would be to use a bit of tech using not only a small camera but also a microphone, attached to a raspberry pi and programmed to only turn on the current when detecting the hornets specifically within range by wing vibration tones and visual recognition programmed into it, set a specific bait trap that only the hornets would be attracted to that honeybees won’t go after (such as protein), and a tiny speaker connected to output a sound that the honeybees ignore but attract the hornets. If set up a meter away from the hive in weatherproof housing and on solar-powered rechargeable batteries, especially if you have multiples of them surrounding the hive, it could work well to lure and kill only the hornets and otherwise inactive when only the honeybees are around and touching it. In fact, the housing for the battery, raspberry pi, bait, speaker, camera, microphone and solar panel can be constructed from similar beehive box wood materials on a much smaller scale with fake entrances to fool even the smarter hornets, if honey is also used in the bait but the fake mini hive housing is sealed enough to prevent honeybees from entering it despite scent holes in the sides.

a) Use essential oils: Hornets dislike the smell of certain essential oils, particularly peppermint, lemongrass, and clove. You can create a repellent spray by mixing several drops of these oils with water and a small amount of dish soap in a spray bottle. Apply this mixture to areas where hornets are frequently seen. b) Plant wasp-repellent plants: Certain plants naturally repel hornets and wasps due to their strong scents. Consider planting spearmint, thyme, eucalyptus, wormwood, basil, bay leaves, lemongrass, or citronella grass near your home or in areas where hornets are a problem.

If you combine the sticky paper with the dragonfly, it can give results (?) The wasps stuck in the paper give alarming hormones that, in combination with the dragonfly, can give signals that the wasps are frightened by! Wasp are extremely intelligent, they are masters of the hunt. We do not have wasps here in British Columbia as large as Japan's Giant Hornet, but we do have Common Aerial Yellowjackets. When one finds a food source, it returns to the nest and brings others. One afternoon while enjoying a beer with a couple of friends on my friends back patio, under a deck umbrella, a wasp came along an snatched a blackfly from the underside of the umbrella. The host was somewhat afraid and went to grab some RAID wasp killer. I told him to relax, it is not here for us, it will clean out those blackflies which have been biting all afternoon. Sure enough 5 minutes later it returned with 2 nestmates, they each grabbed a fly and flew off. Within a half an hour we were no longer being bothered by blackflies, which can get bad in Prince George. My friend said he had no idea that wasps were so beneficial. One day we were taking a break while tree-planting on a remote mountainside in BC. We saw 3 Yellowjackets fly over a shallow mud puddle in a military-style flyover, one commonly sees used by helicopters. One hovering close to the ground, and the other two equidistant behind and above. It was so amazing to watch them hover and fly, all the while maintaining that same triangular formation.

Guess your best bet is to build a nice pond next to your hive and then buy a couple dozen real golden-ringed dragonflies while hoping they stick around. Also, insects may have other senses we are not aware of so it is entirely possible that they could see that your plastic figure was no threat. As I recall insects see different light spectrums as well as sense smells/pheromones. As such what looks like an insect to us may just look like an inanimate blob to them. I don't even know if hornets can see colors.
@elantricity2 ай бұрын
Interesting point. Many insects are capable of seeing UV light and the chance is high that this figurine doesn’t reflect UV light the same way as the real animal, and even we can see some optical differences for example the iridescence. Plus the figurine emits no sound and has no wing movement.

Not sure with hornets, but wasps have good memory. Attach the dragonfly with a zapper. The hornets left alive will witness the instakill and tell the rest of the hive to avoid at all cost.

Why don't you surround your hives with screening where the spacing is only big enough for bees to pass through at a distance of about a foot or so from the hive? That way the hornets wouldn't have a chance to get even close to the bees or the hive itself.

Given that most insects use scent for communication and sensing their surroundings, it's not surprising the dragonfly was pretty useless. The company selling this thing need to figure out how to make it SMELL like a dragonfly. Of course, if they could do that you wouldn't need the fake dragonfly, just spray the scent around the hive. One thing i dont understand is why beekeepers don't put up mesh fencing a few feet from the hive where the mesh is large enough for bees but too small for the hornets. Seems kinda like a no brainer to me, but whatever🤷
@dustinbragg19215 ай бұрын
The hornets would chew straight through it. Even if it took them hours to do it.

I think the reason the dragonfly got attention when stationary but not when moving is because when moving they expect to see it's wings moving too, so when they don't see any wings moving/making sounds they're smart enough to know it's not real. Whereas when the fake dragonfly is stationary, it makes it seem as if it at rest/sleeping.

How about wrapping some thin wires around the dragonfly, one for positive and another for negative and then connect them to a few 9-volt batteries in series so that the hornets get electrified when attacking the decoy. Alternatively, use a dedicated circuit from a usb rechargeable electric mosquito swatter to electrify the decoy with thousands of volts.

If the dragonfly was covered in fly paper glue, it would catch the hornets, but not the honey bees. Thank you for a great video.
