“‘Towers’ is the name of the dormitory that I lived in in college; it’s made up of these two towers - North and South - my girlfriend lived in one and I lived in the other. It’s about falling in love, but also about what happens when you’ve long fallen out of love and those reminders are still there. You drive by them, these two buildings, and you look, and you realize that we really built that up. That we really built that love into these things, and for a long time afterward looking at them really made me feel sad; to see these empty buildings that I don’t go in to anymore. But then, as time goes on, they start to become kind of joyous in their own way: you can look at them and think ‘that love was great and these buildings still stand tall’. But there’s also an element of the fact that they’re just buildings - they’re gonna fall down one day, and they’re not that important because there’s new love in your life and you’ve got to break things down that get built up.” - Justin Vernon

My husband and I got married almost four years ago today. When we pulled into our driveway (it was our first night staying at new house together) he had put this on repeat on the record player. So when we opened the front door, he carried me over the threshold, and all I can remember is how beautiful a time it was. This song holds those memories, and I always find myself coming back to visit this beautiful song.

I've been trying to explain to myself in a rational way what happens to me when I hear a piece of Bon Iver. I fail at all the time. The musicality and lyricism that I find in these pieces of art I find nowhere else. When I listen to Justin's songs and his parallel works I feel connected with forces much greater than me. I feel fragile, strong and exposed. And at the same time. How happy I am to know this work that has brought me so much joy since my adolescence. I find myself in the lines of each composition. This is beautiful. That is expression. This is meaningful production of art. Man, you rock. Thank you.

I at least think the first verse is saying, they both caused mischief because they were "up for it" or ready to try loving each other "before their grown", so it seems like recognizing that the love was passion, was unique, was special, but was wild and unguided, they shared the responsibility in love
@FreightBoostLLCАй бұрын
I think the ending makes me think that she is standing on his sternum, sounds like an acknowledgement that the young love is painful but worth it "Tore your hair out to climb back" "Standing on my sternum don't you climb down" For the love comes the burning love Special, young, wild, passionate, full, complete, but wild, and not always the most wisely guided

This song will always remind me of a boy far along... we started the year of us in last August's swampy dawn. Both too young to know better, we were up for it before we've grown. And so it went on, with us drunk on Bon Iver and intoxicated by each others presence. The skinny love that lasted just for a year, beacuse even if we told each other to be, we weren't patient, kind, balanced or fine. So now it's over (we knew it might be over soon) and i'm singing a song for a lover of long ago. Maybe it was all in my head, but I think someday my pain will mark you..

OK, that's all I'm going to say on that. The scenery is really astonishing and the photography is nothing short of Amazing. It makes you feel like you are part of it. Great vibes through & through except for the very end. Now the tune. The love I have for this song, brought me here. Bon Iver's 'Tower'. It's a well written, played, and produced piece of music. Check out Bon Iver's 'Holocene' video. It's another video that was very well crafted. The scenery is provided by Beautiful Breath-taking, Ice Land!

Deep down inside, I knew everything was okay. I cant get enough of it. But the one thing that pops into my mind when I hear this, is my uncles house. The houses are few and far apart. This is a video(and song) about the human condition. You build these towers your whole life. These monuments to items, people, and vices. The man grew old and alone. All the family and love he had was gone. He went to search for the memory of the towers he used to have. When he found them finally, they were only mirages. When his towers fell, so did his humanity. When a man loses all connection to the things he loves he dies. Now those spots await another prospective builder.

I actually love the first minute, even though it's not really part of the song, it's just so calming. :')

Justin Vernon: Yeah, they all do, take ‘Towers’ for example: ‘Towers’ is the name of the dormitory that I lived in in college; it’s made up of these two towers - North and South - my girlfriend lived in one and I lived in the other. It’s about falling in love, but also about what happens when you’ve long fallen out of love and those reminders are still there. You drive by them, these two buildings, and you look, and you realise that we really built that up. But there’s also an element of the fact that they’re just buildings - they’re gonna fall down one day, and they’re not that important because there’s new love in your life and you’ve got to break things down that get built up.

Has Bon Iver stopped making music? They're soo good they can't quit right? Please answer
@aaronring430210 жыл бұрын
Justin has said that he intends to continue to make music. Right now, or at least in the past 2 years, he has been working with Volcano Choir. I doubt Bon Iver is over with and expect to hear more from them.

Also the first minute and a half or so is actually a separate song called "Lisbon, OH"

The guy in the video made those towers, they were his life's work, he went out to start on another tower but when one of them fell, he fell. That's what i get from this at least.

Im here because of Dermot Kennedy, and his love of Bon Iver, as for Dermots music is all i can bare anymore, as for no other compares but this is definitely great, relaxing, and calming

Awesome! Glad to see ur checking them out. I’ve never heard of Dermot Kennedy, but I’ll go listen now. You should defintely check out some more of Bon Iver’s material, specifically this album (Bon Iver, Bon Iver), which is what “Towers” is from. It’s a beautiful album. Also, their first album: For Emma, Forever Ago. It’s Beautiful. Much love (:
