Bon Scott's High Voltage life as AC/DC front man | On the Brink full documentary | Australian Story

In a world exclusive, Australian Story unravels the legend of AC/DC front man Bon Scott, who was on the verge of becoming an international rock star when he died at age 33.
For the first time ever, the program has been granted access to Bon’s family and friends who provide fresh insights into his vulnerabilities and state of mind leading up to his untimely death in London in 1980.
The program features the first interview with Bon’s younger brother Derek and is introduced by Brian Johnson, Bon’s successor with the band.
Bruce Howe, a former bandmate who shared a house with Bon for five years, noticed a big change when he last saw him in late 1979.
“He wasn’t bubbly and laughing. Maybe he’d come to the state where he’d achieved his dream, he found his holy grail, but found that his holy grail might have looked like an empty goblet,” he told the program.
To this day, Bon Scott is considered one of the world’s best rock and roll singers.

My dad died when I was 11 and I got into AC/DC at about the same time. The first album of theirs I ever had was Dirty Deeds. The first time my mom heard Ride On she was forever hooked. Not so much on the band but Bon. Any time I came home from school and I heard Ride On playing in the living room I knew my mom was missing my dad. She missed him a lot. Bon was there for her. On December 19th, 1977, KISS was in the middle of their Alive 2 tour in support of their "magnum opus" album, Love Gun. This tour is considered KISS's greatest live concert tour that defined them at the top of their game. It was the time when KISS ruled the stage with their theatrics, fire and explosians. At that time no live act could touch them except for the opening band that night. That band was AC/DC. My parents took me to see KISS when I was 10 because I was infatuated with them. But it wasn't KISS who garnered our complete attention, it was Bon Scott and Angus Young. While Angus Young was out of control, Bon acted as his musical director, knowing when to let Angus take off. My mom, a huge fan of Perry Como and Mario Lanza initially was critical of Bon's atire of a bare chest and jeans. She said he should wear an outfit like the Osmonds. Regardless, me and my family were blown away. Bon owned the stage, he was the vocal point, he brought rock and roll to his band and made sure they lived up to it. The show concluded with Angus on Bon's shoulders running around the entire 15,000 seat arena in Largo, MD. That crazy out of control guitarist who defined rock and roll guitar playing at the time along with a raucous singer who defined the ultimate the ultimate singer, eclipsed KISS by a mile. Me, the hugest KISS fans, seeing their best concert tour of all time, only remember AC/DC. I had no idea who they were. On the way home, we all agreed that AC/DC had put on one hell of a show. In a nutshell, AC/DC's first American tour showed the world and the bands for which they opened what the definition of rock and roll while KISS was putting on a circus. They could have brought out some elephants to bring them more attention, but it was all moot. They had just been schooled.

Best Aussie rock bands of that era were these guys, inxs & cold chisel. Proper dirty bar rock n roll is always a good ride and show. I’m from Melbourne and my dad was fortunate enough to be pub crawling and saw these guys few times. He did say bon would go through bottles of hard liquor quite easily… lol Ps ; lucky you on that concert ! Bloody awesome. I was kid and my parents took me to a Michael Jackson concert. Which was pretty cool. I saw Brian adams and Alanis morrisette in the 90s. Wish I saw an Alice in chains , Metallica in prime and these guys instead tho. Lol

@Sasha Taylor Of course the KISS show was great, but, like I said, AC/DC gave them a run for their money. Gene has said ACDC was their strongest opening act. I stilll love the old KISS classics saw Amimalize (Queensrche blew them off the stage), Hot in the Shade, and then Psycho Circus, and another after that. But, the overall memory in my head from that amazing Kiss show, was/is Angus Young. 😀

I was blessed to have seen him in 1978 in Hamburg/Germany on their “Powerage” European Tour (I just checked my diaries as I initially thought it was 1979, but in fact it was October 13, 1978) and had a chance to meet him backstage along with Angus. We purchased T-shirts from the roadies and got autographs by the whole band, so stoked, so proud to hang out with them backstage, simply couldn’t fathom that we met our idols, being just 17 years old. I got a guitar string from Angus as a souvenir, and a can of sprite from Bon. Good Memories.

The spirit of Bon and AC/DC came straight to Brian. Brian was ready to receive it like a baton in a relay. Brian didn’t skip a beat or a miss a step and the band powered on like nothing had happened. You’d have to say there was something magical or otherworldly in that transition. The musical power of the Young brothers with Bon created a transcendent force that had to continue. Brian’s role should never be diminished. The Back in Black album is everything that Bon would have hoped for. And Brian’s legacy is bright. The whole AC/DC history and musical legacy is just extraordinary. Truly great art that will live forever.

At 29:50 they're talking about Bon getting tired of the road, thinking about settling down, etc. It reminded me of a conversation with a guitarist in a band that frequently played in a bar I worked as security. One night out of the blue he came to me and started talking about how band life and partying all the time was fun. IIRC it was over 10 years full time band member. But he was getting tired of it all and that made him evaluate where was he going in life. You can't do band life non-stop until you're 60 something. He talked about the same things mentioned in this video, family, wife, kids, an actual house to come back to every night. It was interesting and from the heart. Occasionally, I wonder what he actually did as I quit working part-time security. It felt kind of strange having a guy who's 7 years older looking for your ear and input.

I met Bon Scot for a few seconds in1978 in Knoxville TN when AC/DC was backing Alice Cooper on the Schools Out tour. He had did a quick run out of the Coliseum to get a drink of water and I was returning and we both met one of Knoxville,s finest who would'nt let him back in because he was shirtless.I pointed to a poster and to him and the officer finally believed who he was. Bon gave me a cheeky little grin and a quick kiss 💋😘 and he ran back in. Greatest concert story EVER.

In one of the interviews, Brian said people had commented early on that he sounded like Bon! Bon was said to tell band member that if anything happened to him Brian was their man?” Especially “Back In Black” was hard for me to tell but I believe they were written by Bon with his families blessing! I'm guessing that Scotts surviving family members, who are heirs to his estate that receives annual royalties from AC/DC were, and probably still are in a non-disclosure agreement with the band concerning Scott and the circumstances of his mysterious passing.

@@deanladue3151 I read somewhere, and I could be mistaken now since things may have changed, but thought saw mention that VAnda et al were extremely controlling about ACDC content online. At that time I couldn't find mp3 to download of the things I already had and had to do it myself off cds even though I'd have gladly paid for the ease of downloading vs fighting w/my system. It was a pain, and they missed out on some royalties from that. Also explains why so many cool acdc things get yanked off youtube all the time.

When I heard the song High Voltage I was blown away. Bon was one of a kind.

I saw AC/DC for the first time on Nov 23, 1977 (my first concert!), in Knoxville, TN,, and they were virtually unknown at that time in America . They co-headlined with UFO (w Michael Schenker), who was similarly trying to build up an audience in the US, and the concert was a specially priced $3.50 "Thanksgiving Special", which was about half the price of most concerts at the time. I remember being knocked out by Angus' running and trashing around, but the one thing that I remember most was when Bon asked the crowd to sing along on "The Jack"....since nobody was familiar at the time with any of their music, we all thought Bon wanted us to sing "she's got the JOCK!", because his accent was so thick, we mistook "jack" for "jock"! Lol Nut and we all sang it loud!! I'm sure the band found it amusing! The 2nd time I saw them, they were opening for Alice Cooper, in the summer of '78, and they got a huge reception from the sold out crowd. By the time they came back in '79, Knoxville loved AC/DC so much, they sold out the Coliseum as headliners, with Blackfoot opening. I remember Angus falling to the floor and kicking around during his solo segment, and somebody reached up and snatched one of his sneakers off his foot! I wonder if that person still has that shoe? Lol. Ironically, I was at a Blackfoot concert a few months later, the band was that opened for them in '79, when the singer announced that Bon had passed away! You could hear the whole crowd gasp. Knoxville is one of the towns that loved and supported AC/DC years before they became huge...in fact, the first time the came to town with Brian Johnson, they didn't have half the crowd they had at Bon's last show in Knoxville. But we warmed up to Brian soon enough, and it seemed like every boom box in town came with a cassette of "Back in Black"! Anyhow, I consider myself BLESSED to have seen AC/DC with Bon 3 times...I've never seen them with "the new guy", Brian!

@@maryfrancesbeckerhaggerty5353 UFO is also a band that has special significance to me...not only were they playing at my first concert, but I saw them a second time on March 18, 1982, opening for Ozzy Osborne, this time without Michael Schenker.... the thing I remember most about their set was that some freak in the audience brought some dead snakes with him, and he threw one up on stage during UFOs set...Phil Mogg jumped out of the way, but Pete Way later picked it up and chased Mogg around the stage with it! The freak also threw one at Ozzy, but Ozzy didn't want anything to do with it, as this was a few months after "the bat biting incident '! But the thing that made this concert so special was being blown away by Randy Rhoads. The next day in school, we were all talking about how incredible Randy was... then, when I got home after school, I found out that Randy Rhoads got killed that very morning! So that concert was his very last show! I still have the ticket stub in a photo album somewhere, I wish I could find it!

Cool story kl, I live 90 miles north of Knoxville. The first time I heard ACDC it was Dirty Deeds. Malcom and Angus are the 2 that got me wanting to play rock n roll guitar and still do to this day. When Back in Black came out, I got a new cassette player boom box and that album did come with it for Christmas of 81' . I was late getting it, but I learned every song on the album. I love the story about Angus' shoe! 🎸🎸

I must add this: my old man toured on ac/dc’s crew right after he finished the KISS ALIVE II tour. I think he toured with them again in later years. Gabe Fielding died last year with all his not-locked-up daughters around his bed, with his requested farewell music: for those who are about to rock, we salute you. I'm old enough to have seen Bon fronting AC/DC several times... Some of my fondest memories of my youth. Bon's death hit me hard... much harder than most all of the other stars that have passed on through my lifetime. The fact that Bon's songs still comprise a large portion of the setlists to this day just show how great a songwriter he was. RIP.

EDIT: You are lucky to have seen both of them Brian. I never got to see Bon live but I would have loved it. As I watch some of his music videos, one of the things I always appreciate is that he seems to be actually having fun while he is singing. Unlike most rock singers, he actually smiles sometimes while performing. He’s genuinely happy to be there, it shows and it’s a lovable trait in a Frontman. Brian had huge shoes to fill and I think he did it. But Angus is the only visual frontman now. I feel like with Bon, they had two frontmen and Angus appropriately visually shared the stage more. That being said, I saw the band in concert with Brian and the show was great.

Unbelievable in hindsight given the cultural significance of that show in Australia. I have hazy memories of being a toddler watching Countdown as a 3 year old most Sundays, and recalling AC/DC appearing. They do say that as you get older your first memories are actually music.
