In the second part of this cookery demonstration, Johnnie appears in a striped t-shirt and peaked cap, while Fanny conducs the demonstration in a French accent.

This film is wonderful - very funny and priceless in its own way. What a pair of characters they were!

To our modern eyes it looks ridiculously over the top, but it's worth putting this in historical context. Britain in the 1950s and early 1960s was a drab, grey place. People had gone through the horrors of the war and much of Britain was still bombed out. Rationing had just been abolished. People wanted some kind of splash of colour and excitement. This was the kind of thing that lifted the spirits and made people think that they could aspire to something better.

They were brilliant but even then the style of presentation was a bit out-of-date and over the top for most people. For royalty or the extreme wealthy for occasions, yes. For every day people, nope. Had I been around in those days, I'd be there watching in person as they had a flair unmatched since.
