Bona Vita Kettle Fuse Replacement

Replace that burnt out fuse in the base of your Bona Vita Kettle.

Mine when plugged in was shown correct temp. But when i set to temp i needed, the kettle just "klik" and wont boil. The wire on the fuse it's there but dont know if it's still working Its like the brain is working but couldnt act.

any idea what the room temp value of the thermistor is, mine cooked off and I tried a 10k but it shows 100c when the water hits 25c, so 10k is too small

Just by poking the internet, it looks like around 5-10K is normal. Just guessing here but maybe you've got a negative temperature coefficient thermistor and the original is a positive temperature coefficient thermistor.

@@dork3nergy Thanks for the reply, It is a NTC as the temp indication rises when the water heats, it just caps out at 25c because the circuit is interpreting the resistance as 100c, was hoping you might have a room temp reading from the 2'nd and 3'rd ring to give a ball park resistance. May try a 15k and adjust the smd resistors to get closer.

I see what you're saying. I get 97K between the 2nd and 3rd ring going from large to small. Between the two copper contacts on either side I get 16K. It's probably 15K then eh.

@@dork3nergy Thanks for the info, I was thinking that 15K sounds about right. measured mine empty and at 20C it read 10.5k while the digital base registered 80C. So with your measurement and mine I should be able to look up the coefficient table and confirm the value... Much appreciated.

My kettle will not turn off using the button, I have to unplug it. It is brand new. The light on the second number is not working either. The company is replacing it but it seems like it could be fixed and used. What do you think the issue is? It seems a fuse may not be the issue since it turns on and heats the water. Can I include a picture in this post?

Sorry for the late reply. Based on your symptoms it is likely something on the control board. As far as I know you can't get a replacement either. Unfortunately you're kind of hooped there I'm afraid. Good they sent you a new one. Keep the old base for parts though!!

My kettle is acting strange; starts heating then gets to around 35-40C and stops with display changing and finishing up showing all 000. By unplugging the power it sometimes restarts for one cycle to boil but then starts playing funny buggers again (Ozzie here). Do you think that it might be a faulty relay and tbh one time I did run it low on water? Hope you are still monitoring this video but thanks in advance.

The strange behaviour of the display makes me think it's the brain box. Might be worth taking the base apart and having a look at the board. Is it possible it's getting wet somehow?

I see a relay switch on the board. It is the rectangular black box. The switch may be malfunctioning. You should hear it click on as the kettle calls for heat and click off at desired temp.

Good point @iontheball1. I don't think that is the problem with Dylan's unit since he doesn't seem to have power to the control board at all. The relay could be the culprit if everything else worked but it wasn't heating.

Thank you for making this video per my request! I checked my fuse and it doesn’t seem broken or burnt at all. Do you have any other guesses what the problem may be? Is there another fuse somewhere in there? My problem is it won’t turn on anymore after only a couple uses (I bought it used so no warranty).

DorkEnergy Hey! Yes it is. It worked fine a couple times, then didn’t turn on for an hour or so, then turned on, and then the next day wouldn’t turn on anymore. This is all in the span of 24 hours. I used it about 2 times total with one segment in the middle with it not powering on the same way as now. Fuse doesn’t look discolored or broken.

DorkEnergy I notice there are some other pieces on the motherboard and am wondering if it’s one of those. I looked inside the kettle too to see if a safety feature was tripped, but I didn’t see anything that looked obvious.

Make sure the fuse is good. It may not look burnt so examine it closely with a magnifying glass or take a macro picture with your phone and look for that wire. I take it you don't have a multimeter. The not turning on, turning on later then nothing smells like a connection problem. There is not much on that power board that would go without looking like it let the smoke out. Look for discoloration at or around any of those parts. Also check all the connections to make sure they are solid. Even unplug and replug them in. Let me know how it goes.

DorkEnergy I got a multimeter and checked the fuse. It checks out good. I looked discoloration on the wires and started smelling. Does smoke leave a dust-like substance on a wire? If so, I think I found the fire they may have got water on it.

Oh man, thanks so much for making this. I'm American but living in Germany and I was wondering if you know what type of fuse I'd need to buy here? If you're not sure I can just wait until my triangle bits get here (eyeroll at Bonavita) and check it then. Thanks!

I take it you bought it in Germany with their 230V coming out of the wall holes. I think I'd wait to see what was in there before buying anything. Let me know if it's different than the 1A,250V in the North American version eh.

@@dork3nergy Mine is a European 230V model, and it does have a 250V fuse. That's all I could read without desoldering it, but I assume it's the same as yours. My model looks a little bit different though, the big capacitor next to the fuse is yellow. The date stamp on the main board is 2011-10-25.

Amateurtip: I got the triangle screws out with a small flat screwdriver and pressing down hard. A small allen key may also do the trick.
