Free Western Classic: Bonanza - Episode 135 - She Walks in Beauty - Hoss falls under the spell of a beautiful shady lady from San Francisco and asks her to be his wife, believing his love can change her even after she tries to seduce his brother Adam.
She Walks in Beauty
Director: Don McDougall
Writer: William L. Stuart (as William Stuart)
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 22 September 1963 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
The fifth season of Bonanza commenced on September 22, 1963 with the episode titled "She Walks in Beauty." Gena Rowlands guest-stars as Ragan Miller, whose ravishing good looks have brought her nothing but misery and disastrous romantic relationships. Despising all men, she merely uses them to get what she really wants out of life. Ragan's arrival in Virginia City immediately sows the seeds of jealousy between brothers Hoss and Adam Cartwright, culminating in a bloody fistic brawl. Jeanne Cooper costars as Ragan's older sister Emilia. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"Season five of Bonanza began with this tale of two sisters. Jeanne Cooper is not thrilled with the prospect of younger sister Gena Rowlands coming home to Virginia City. Rowlands is a notorious flirt who uses and disposes of men as it suits her. Kind of like Scarlett O'Hara without the southern accent and the roots of Tara.
But Dan Blocker is smitten with her. And as we know Hoss Cartwright is a good hearted soul who only sees the good in people. But Pernell Roberts is a more worldly person and he was recently in San Francisco where he heard tales of Rowlands and her men.
This leads to a split in the Cartwright family, but how it is all resolved is for you to see the story.
It's a nicely written story with both Cooper and Rowlands and Blocker and Roberts of the regulars dominating the story." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"Unbeknownst to him, Hoss Cartwright has fallen in love at first sight with a woman of ill-repute (played in an extremely polite manner by Gena Rowlands) who is visiting her sister from racy San Francisco. This being 1963, the writers can't use the words 'jezebel' or 'prostitute', but the point is made clear when Adam Cartwright is seduced by man-hungry Gena right in her sister's front yard! The crux of the story however is a bit outdated, that a woman with a bad reputation is much like a leopard--she could never change her spots. Rowlands gets a good lecturing by Ben Cartwright--we even get to see the Cartwright brothers come to blows (minus Little Joe, who spends this entire episode hovering in the background). I'm not sure why the "Bonanza" stories couldn't feature each of the main characters equally when it came to tales of family conflict, but it seems the lead parts were divvied up week by week. This fifth season of the show was strong on episodes featuring Dan Blocker's Hoss prominently, and here he gets to utilize a colorful range: lovestruck rancher, clumsy gentleman caller, jealous boyfriend, hurt and angry brother. It's a triumph for both Blocker and Hoss, as we see a loyal and dedicated side to the big guy when it comes to matters of the heart (he even agrees to leaving his precious Ponderosa if his lady-love wants a life in the city). The film-stock used on "Bonanza" was terrific, as the colors just pop off the screen, and Rowlands (in an off-the-shoulder, Lily Langtree-styled party dress) has never looked so dreamy. Blocker, too, looks a might handsome, and his devotion to her is exceptionally heartfelt for a weekly western television program." Written by moonspinner55 on IMDb.com

When I was a little girl, this episode came on tv. All I could remember of it was the part where she got off the stage wearing the veil and Hoss says something about 'must be ugly as a mud fence'. or like that. lol I wanted to see it again as an adult to see what the episode was about. When I found it I was like YEAH! Thank you so much for posting these episodes! They show morals and are not afraid of quoting scripture. I miss those days.

Gena, aging some, with an aging james Garner acted in the 2002(?) love story that was one of the rare great films, in these times when Hollywood is virtually no more. The young Rachel McAdams endeared millions to her, she playing wonderfully in last 20 years in some other fine films. Darn it, the name of film simply slipped away...showing my aging! (Look up "Rachel McAdam's" name and her film w/Garner & Gena Rowlands.

I imagine the weeks viewership shot up this week. I believe Genna was/or is married to a film director many decades and he directed Genna and ames Garnerr in 2002(?) in that greatest love story with Rachel McAdams and and older Garner & Genna Rowlands...absolutely beautiful.

What a wonderful episode. Early on when Hoss talked about getting old with Reagan I just wanted to jump over to the TV stage in 1965 and say; “Don’t worry Ms Rolands! You’ll be a classical beauty your entire life. There will be a couple of dozens of wonderful roles, Pauly being a personal favorite. Then many decades from now there will be a heart wrenching beloved Notebook - your beauty and acting will still win everyone’s hearts.

A reflection of the times. Can one forgive and forget, and start over. Can one change one's nature. I like how Ragan ran out to the wilderness to get a way from her citified, San Francisco ways and reputation. We never get to now what that "reputation" is/was only inferences. Was she just a flirt with men, a paid escort, a "party girl," a piece of furniture, a nymphomaniac. Did she realize she was wasting away for nought..... and that she did want someone to "grow old together"--- as Hoss said. The problem for her is could SHE change and accept country-life rather than city-life. Hoss is a Gentle Giant, naive, forgiving, forgetting, and loving. Adam is more reserved and analytical. Even when Hoss sees Adam kissing Ragan, he sort of harrumphs it. That he IS WILLING to go on. Good script with the two sister bickering back and forth: how their father favored the older over the younger, et. al. Ah, still a parental problem even now. Good script, acting, and theme: Forgive and Forget, and go on.

She was so used to men falling for her. Her "Ego" couldn't take that Adam didn't fall for her like every other man. Her character reminds me of a " Marilyn Monroe" character. Her father didn't show her love so she used her beauty to get love from men but they only used her as a play thing or some object to make themselves look better than what they were. Adam loved his brother he didn't even fight back and let Hoss beat him up. Hoss would never believe anything about her. She had to show him what kind of woman she truly was. A few episodes ago Ben told a lady in the wagon they would be to the Ponderosa in a few hours. If Virginia City was a few hours by wagon the lake would have been a full days ride in a carriage but they were always taking pretty girls out there. The sheer size of the place yet they were forever back and forth to Virginia City or the lake like it was a five minute ride has always been amusing.

According to the description of the plot in this episode, this was broadcast in SEPTEMBER 1963 and it's the beginning of the 5th season. Simple math tells you that if you subtract 5 from 63, you get 58. Therefore, the first season started in September 1958- not September 1959. The 14th and last season started in September 1972 and ended in May 1973.
@neilwaldock6272
@neilwaldock6272 2 жыл бұрын
Season 5 minus Season 1 (5-1) = 4. So September 1963 - 4 years = September 1959, when Bonanza started. Another way to think of it is that there's been 4 seasons plus 1 episode, so at this point Bonanza had been going for 4 years. S1 59-60, S2 60-61, S3 61-62, S4 62-63 S5 63-64.

Just explaining that you don't subtract 5. You subtract 4, because at the beginning of Season 5, you've only had 4 seasons so far. Think of it this way, on the 1st of May (the 5th month, the same as having the 5th season), how many months of the year have you had so far? 4 (Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr) plus 1 day, not 5. So that's why working backwards we know Bonanza started in 1959, which it did, not 1958. Anyway, none of it matters, just continue to enjoy watching the episodes as we all do. Have a great day!

@@neilwaldock6272 You are very bad in math. The first season started in September 1958. It ended in May 1959. The series lasted for 14 seasons. Therefore, the last season started in September 1972 and it ended in May 1973. Dan Blocker died in 1972. "Bonanza" was only on for one more season after he died. I'm through talking to you because it's obvious that it would be impossible for me to ratiocinate with you.
