Little Joe, ghosted! 👻 Davey Davidson who played Joe’s haunting love interest, Louise, was all over TV shows in the late 50s, 60s and 70s. You can see her from Rawhide to Mannix to Rich Man, Poor Man and about 200 other guest appearances on TV. Doris Dowling who plays the former sheriff’s wife (and at first appears to personify evil) is straight out of the great black and white film noir era of Hollywood. Many films worth watching.

Depends on the age of the children. I really feel that numerous episodes are not appropriate for elementary school children. This episode was just creepy. I would not have liked watching it as a child.

@@user-pd7il3xz5j watched The Twilight Zone young and got really creepy comic books mixed with funny ones in a stack whenever we got sick - wouldn't have minded. There were books of fairy takes, some pretty grisley from various cultures that we could check out of libraries too. And any weird relative that told a good ghost story was valued by kids. I had to add on: You may be right on very young, as Psycho and 13 ghosts disturbed me then. But I read early and covered The Red Pony & Lost Horizon in second grade (didn't much understand but recognized it 13 years latter when flipping channels). After that I still read kids books, but there wasn't any keeping me out of anything. The difference was it was never sold or pushed on us like some disgusting books now days. With my own. Youngest self-censored even during prime time, turning his back & preferring to run the ceeks and woods to TV. The one older went to a few flicks with disturbing scenes. but it is different if a parent is there to explain them. She turned Clan if The Cave Bear's Aylla into twins, then added Emilio Estavez as Billie the Kid into imaginary play pals during a time when I had to work too much, so I tend to think that protection is wise as long as imagination isn't stifled. And a few of the cartoons I've watched with a grandchild are disgustingly indoctrinating-though widely praised anyhow. By 12, I'd just walk in a drugstore and buy whatever book I wanted- too long a story. For most very little ones, you are right. I conceed.

@G Most kids can understand creepy things when they discuss them with caring adults. The first creepy movie I saw (rerun, because I wasn't born when it premiered in 1959) was "On The Beach". I was about 6 and I loved it, even though much of the intertwined storylines went over my head. I especially loved the ending of the original (more than the remake) and it inspired me to improve my reading so I could eventually read the book.

This is definitely a re-watch episode to understand it... one thing I noticed. when the townspeople talk to each other their voice sounds like an echo, especially the dead sheriff's wife, who seems like a tormented soul, this episode takes a few views to appreciate it, once you know the plot, it's a good watch...

A-train: This is why I'm OK with watching decent movies or shows more than once. I can watch from different points of view, looking for things other than following the plot as the main thing after the first time. Or understanding certain plot hints better (being more obvious once you know the story, etc). Good shows take good work from a variety of people, and it's great to see how it all comes together.

The echoing quality of the voices of the townfolk when Joe isn’t around is an eerie and effective way of letting the audience know that Joe wasn't hallucinating. He was dealing with actual ghosts, even if he didn't realize it at the time. It's also satisfying that he evidently broke the curse by getting the townspeoole to fight with him.

Val- ahh know a real ghost at a rest spot in rai valley off new zealand. it told me ahh was one off them before attackin g derick Foster who was asleep behind me. Foster told everyone latter that O'Dwyer- me was more than human. in 1990 ahh was brutely murdered then brought back too life, and since then can see and hear beings that no other human can.

Yep Now all it needs is that opening, spoken masterfully in that timeless characteristic biting intense clipped edgy signature voice of a legendary dapper sophisticated cigarette wielding producer, famous for his serious pertinent monologues that goes something like the following: Portrait of a sturdy young man named Joseph Cartwright, or known commonly as "Lil Joe", the youngest of three Brothers who with their Father, Ben Cartwright, owns and operates one of the largest and riches timberlands in Nevada, called, as we all know as that leading star of a popular Western TV show, The Ponderosa . Right now, as he's returning home from a business deal, alone on horseback, his Father and brothers are preparing a surprise birthday party for Joseph, but he won't be there to celebrate the special occasion with them. Instead a turn of events will have him wonder into a desolate forgotten town, who's only inhabitants are empty decrepit buildings, visited only by tumble weeds, wails of lonely winds, and vagrant desert dust. But Joseph will soon find out that this town, seemingly deserted, is still occupied by it's townsfolk, only to have long ago moved away and taken up permanent residence in another town, where they are waiting to meet him, but it's a different unique town, a kind of town which can't be found on a map, except that of The Twilight Zone.

@Dana Dowling. Yes he was!! He lied at first to Hoss when he told Hoss that he was going to bed. Hoss knew that his pa was lying so he told his pa that he wanted to go out and look for Little Joe. Then, Ben agreed. You obviously don't read body language very well, but I can tell when a person is lying.

Awesome Episode from a TV era of great western TV series like Bonanza, Gunsmoke, etc. Remember a s a kid, seeing this Episode at our neighbors house, wasn;t yesterday. I was a teenager and I'm 71 now- There's a few episodes of Bonanza that i recall the Story name- this is one for sure.

This is actually a theme of several westerns, only in reverse. High Plaines Drifter and Pale Rider, the main protagonist is a ghost delivering retribution to real people.

I've seen some reviews of Bonanza that call this one of the WORST episodes of the series, and I can't understand that. Great premise, well acted ... This is one of the series' best--damned-near Twilight Zone.

Gee-I remember Sunday night's 50-60 years ago. In my small Newfoundland community, there were about 20 families out of 100 or so with a TV. As a youngster, it was Ed Sullivan and BONANZA to watch at my neighbors house Sunday after Sunday. I recall some story titles from that great western series and Twilight Town is one. Exactly. All he had to do was show them the badge instead of throwing it on the ground. Anyone else would have kept it along with some other souvenirs to show when retelling the story.

He saw it. I think the key is in what his father told him about when a man knows something deep down in his heart... when his father told him the legend, it all clicked. Then he saw the girl, and remembered the badge. He didn't have to say a word... as Ben said, it was enough for him just to know.

Don't horses see better than us like other mammals with reflective lenses. You can also use peripheral vision to walk in the dark. But good question.

Joe is wandering out in the desert on horseback probably a hundred miles away from home at least and they’re throwing him a surprise party! It’s a great episode as always but that’s the only wrench in the whole episode. But it’s tv so what the heck shut up and enjoy 👍🏻
