Free Western Classic: Bonanza - Episode 165 - The Dark Past - Dev's line of work seems ordained given his past. When his quarry's wife turns out to be pregnant, he uses that to trap him, even if it might risk Little Joe's life.
The Dark Past
Director: Murray Golden
Writer: William Bruckner
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 3 May 1964 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Dev Farnum's horse goes lame. He's near the Ponderosa and stops for some help. He gets another horse from the Cartwrights but hasn't enough money to pay them. He offers to work for it but when he develops a lot of blisters, they find out he's not just a preacher's son. He's also a bounty hunter.
Reviews:
"Dennis Hopper delivers a great performance as a bounty hunter, a man without friends or needing any so he says. The big surprise for the Cartwrights is that Hopper is the son of a preacher that Lorne Greene knew from the old days.
But Hopper has abandoned that and his quarry is outlaw Ron Starr whose wife ran away and is back in Virginia City. He figures that if he hangs around Susan Seaforth Hayes long enough Starr will surface.
All I'll say is that things don't quite go according to Hopper's plans. And he finds he needs friends like the Cartwright's in time of need.
Susan Seaforth Hayes does well too as the very naive girl. I have to say that folks like the Cartwrights don't come along that often in life to lend a helping hand.
Hopper's scenes with Michael Landon are very good as Little Joe shows the upbringing he's had that Hopper has rejected.
All around good episode." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"I'm a little surprised this episode is rated so low. For me it's one of my personal favorite Bonanza episodes. Certainly Dennis Hopper is outstanding and handsome at age 28, even though he looks younger. Watch for his big dramatic reveal about half-way through the episode. Also interesting to see Susan Seaforth (Hayes) with very long hair and a pre-"Days of Our Lives" appearance. The plot is slightly contrived to get Dennis and Susan to the Ponderosa, but once they do, you'll enjoy seeing their budding attraction. They have nice chemistry together and the and acting and great ending save it. Hard to believe Dennis would be doing "Easy Rider" just five years later." Written by yboutell on IMDb.com

Such a big difference between modern programmes and the programmes of 50+ years ago. Discussing God openly, wouldn't happen nowadays. Dennis Hopper what a powerhouse actor he was, sadly gone. That Hollywood has long since gone, but at least we have all the programmes from that era to watch and remember.☺

I have no question. I recommend reading Harold Kushner's book, "Why Bad Things Happen to Good People". Simply put we do not live in paradise. We live in a world of random misfortunes. Who ever said that life is fair and we will always get what we want? I have a degree in Physics. It did not turn me away from God. It enlightened me on His creations.

Let’s be reminded, from creation God gave man free will Therefore, each person must choose and God honours our free will to choose good or evil. The Bible clearly teaches - the third heavens controlled by God - the second heavens is the demonic realm - the first heaven and earth is given to us as human beings, to govern by our free choices

Something tells my gut, instincts that acting may be more difficult than it looks, even though the bullets aren't real the dirt is, and the emotions are also, as well as the horseback riding. Horseback riding isn't easy, you have to ride with the horse in a commanding way, and yet with the horse in harmony with it's forward and up and down, not easy especially at a clip of 25 -30 miles an hour. Dennis Hopper needed som work and he had to play a preacher's rough neck bitter son, that was a gunslinger even carried an extra bullet belt around his shoulders. Notice the size of those bullets, they weren't for pistol. Good acting, script, and episode, all's well that ends well, and he gets the pregnant beauty.

Yes, he thought he was too good for a TV Western (newsflash: he wasn't) and was going to leave after 5 seasons when his contract was up, but then couldn't resist the good money so he signed on for another year. Guess his principles could be bought! And then after he quit the show, he just did other westerns like Big Valley and Gunsmoke, and other TV shows until he lucked into Trapper John. He did some regional theater, nut never became the stage star he thought he was destined to be. What a pretentious ass he was.

Anyone else surprised that his left arm was injured? 43:42 Even watching it back, it's clear that his gun hand was injured, which tracks with the missing hammer. But his left arm wasn't in the path of the bullet or ricochet. So what were they thinking? Why not have his hand injured, and he fought through the pain to hold up the gun earlier?

Also, if you find it so easy to believe in the devil, then why is it so hard for you to believe in God? Hes already told you, because theres nothing but pure ache, pain, evil, and suffering in this world and this so-called all loving God never steps in and changes things for the better.

He lead the horse 20 feet behind the stable and shot the horse. The stink would be out of this world. No farmer would allow that... Just saying....
