This is a wonderful example of Father son relationships, I love it when Big Hoss said what we can't say, and then said we love you pa, and Ben's left eye twitched a few times, and a father's a fool. The best Bonanza episode I've seen thus far. What people don't understand is how important father son's relationships are.

Being part of an ensemble makes it less likely that any one man will stand out far above the others. But John Wayne and Clint Eastwood are arguably the two biggest stars in history, so that's a pretty high standard. Personally, I'd still take James Arness over any cinematic cowboy that ever existed.

@@rosered103 The scripts were all over the map. Some were well crafted and some were embarrassingly lame, silly or unrealistic. And whatever Pernell said he might do, he never failed to turn in quality, perfectly in character performances as Adam. He was a professional.

One of the problems Parnell had with the scripts was the fact that it never allowed them to grow up. The had to constantly live with their father in the same house, ask permission for pretty much everything, never allowing them to grow up, get married ,have a family. I'm not sure it would have fixed everything but I think Parnell would have stayed a bit longer to be honest. He also seemed to like scripts that challenged his acting capabilities/delt with hard topics for society like "The Crucible", "Song in the Dark" and "The Dark Gate" episodes like that.

Heartbreaking to see not only Emiliano passing, but this marvellos horse giving his life too, and Joe suffering the loss of both. It not only shows the loyalty among those guys, but of animals giving everything for the humans they´re attached to and vice versa. One of my favorite episodes, though very sad.💔🐎

This episode reminded me of loving my dad, stepfather in spite of his ignorances, and his tendency to become a belligerent puppet for his insane wife, mom of his children, everything he confessed to her, his vulnerabilities she used against him, mine as well. She was insane, and in the '60s, 70's this wasn't a popular challenge, and he died a drunk because of her, he couldn't get past his construct of once married always married.

Adam felt that the show that made him world famous was beneath him. He left to pursue his career dreams. He didn't like his role or that he played one of the three sons who had to listen to his father. Unfortunately, he is not remembered by anything else he ever did to better his career. I don't think he realized how much he meant to the show and the fans who loved him.

It is a shame that Pernell Robert’s was a bit full of himself when it came to acting but I also understand how frustrated he was still beholding to his Pa at his age. Pernell left and and of course when they upset Producers directors etc they make it clear to other people in the film industry not to hire him which is why his career folded. Just as producers have shown recently that to get in the film industry you have to do “special favours”. In a interview I saw with David Dortort when he was elderly he regretted letting Pernell leave and said it made sense for at least one of them to marry and live on the Ponderosa. I think Loren Green would have made a great Grandfather and Michael and Dan good uncles. However he chose to leave and personally I didn’t really miss him he was so moody all the time. The only episodes I saw that he looked really happy was The Hayburner which I understand was his favourite comedy. However I loved Bonanza as a child and now at the age of 67 I have re-watched every episode again to pass away the time during Covid lockdown and brought back many happy childhood memories.

All of the Cartwrights are loveable, interesting men and Adam was my favorite; level headed, dependable, and capable of discernment....traits of a big brother and a mature person. I like all of that about him and may I add, handsome too. I missed him when he was gone but I understood his reasons for leaving. Grown men ought to have wives or girlfriends, but the the writers/producers for some odd reason didn't want to explore that avenue. Makes no good sense to me. There you have four good hearted, principled, hard working, wealthy, grown men, but not one of them was allowed a long term love interests; just silly.

It is what it is. The formula worked. The object of a winner is to stay top of the ratings and attract advertising. Dan Blocker stated in an interview not long before he passed, that none of the stars thought Bonanza would last so long. Unfortunately the aspirations of individual actors are down the list of priorities.

Pernell did have some success afterwards he was in quite a few episodes of Big valley and Mission impossible. I was sad when he left to but he didn’t seem to mesh all well with the other actors. I don’t know if you’ve seen the big valley but all of those actors meshed well and all had different character personalities. So it depends

The Mexican guy picked up the little girl's Raggedy Ann doll and set it by the well. Raggedy Ann dolls were not invented until 1915. Bonanza was set in the 1860's. I never catch filming flaws but I caught this one.

This is a great episode. The love of sons and father. The deep felt desire of Emiliano for a son of his own and his reverence for Joe's love for his father makes the later tragedy all the more meaningful. BUT...in Hollywood, couldn't they find any Mexican actors? Why are they turning to Martin Landau? It seemed he thought Mexicans are super excitable, dramatic, and overly emotional. I still like this episode..but one more criticism....why not use a blood squib when Emiliano gets shot? Even if he had a ketchup packet to squeeze, it would be better than clutching at a gunshot wound that has no blood. Grrrr

Actually, it’s not really necessary to see a lot of blood and gore like they do in today’s movies and shows. There are a lot of Bonanza episodes that show blood but it’s never over the top. The show didn’t need to emphasize the blood but the action carried the story line without outright gore.
