did you turn off the circuit to do this work for the water heater or no? I appreciate any feedback, thanks 👍

I did not. Since it was only the ground I felt safe doing it without turning the power off

Shouldn't you connect your ground wire to the electrical panel?

It is. But this is bonding the water heater. It does not go directly to the panel

@@KletteTech does the grounding wire to the electrical panel go all the way from meter or connecting anywhere close to the panel would be ok?

@@biguk11 Here in Washington we have to run two grounds. I have just finished my new 200amp panel and had to upgrade the meter panel to one with an external shutoff. Grounds both go to the meter box: 1. from the 2 ground rods spaced 12 feet apart. 2. the other ground has to go to the water supply line within 5' of entering the structure.

The objective of bonding is to give the same electrical potential to all metal components comprising the unit, so that, say, you don't get sparking between the metal parts. Disparate potential can damage electronic components and/or set fires if there is a spark. This can happen whether or not the the unit is grounded. Grounding is to give a path to Earth.

You know my logic tells me that is it dangerous to bond to a gas line. But what do I know, I’m just a HVAC technician/contractor that has been in this field for 11 years. If anyone can explain why it’s not dangerous let me know.

This is crazy I work for gas company and have work for here for 20 years and in our policy says if there is a bond or a ground to the gas pipe, you must take it off no bonds are grounds or not allowed to be on the gas system i’m serious today is the first time I’ve ever seen that they’re requiring y’all to do it as code

Nope, doing new gas line connection to main meter and called inspector, gas line needs to be grounded with copper 8 gauge wire.(In WA)

Same here, we are told to remove bond if we come across this inside customer’s home, no exception. (IL)

National Electric Code doesn't require bonding. the furnace and hot water tank should have an equipment ground and that's should be all you need

Your gas line is a metal connection to each appliance which is already grounded..... So, saying you can't bond gas line is a code no one understands.

@@kevinkelly9303 are you bonding or running feeds? 1/2" is fine for feed to the water heater, but I would go with 3/4" feed (gas pipe) to the furnace, which I am assuming is natural gas?
