I have not played board game since 1977, but your channel sure has piqued my interest again. By the way when I was an office equipment salesman in lower Manhattan in 1976, I called on a company that was making board games. Doing all the die cutting of the pieces etc. Very much like Avalon Hill, but smaller. Talked to the owner who was up to his ass in alligators, but he was passionate about making board games. Long time ago, wish I could remember more about it. Please keep up this series, best hour I have spent on you tube in a long time/

Glad to see you guys back, everyone looking good. Great to see you back. Could you guys consider doing a HAMTAG on "lesser known Wars" like BOER, Crimean, Roses, etc. Even some lesser known Vietnam, WWI battles would be good. One of the things I like about Wargames is to give me incentives to learn more about history I know only a little about. Would be interested to know from you which games may be best to consider.

Great idea. I think the only problem is I (Bart) would have a really hard time finding 5 that I have played in some of those settings. That being said we are working towards some Top 5 topics that deal with what we want/like to play so I could see us doing a list that may talk about some of these 'settings/themes' that you don't see as much of in war games. Great idea.

"Cloud Ships and Either Flyers", "Sky Galleons of Mars"... great for its time.
@douglaspearson16477 жыл бұрын
My very first war board game was Battle Of Britain (Game Science) by Lou Zocchi. Who also did Luftwaffe (AH). Pre-game setup was huge. The British player had to allocate all his light & Heavy AA guns to what cities and airfields and what cities & airfields had aircraft factories and two engine factories. Along with allocating how many squads and how many planes to each, the German player only had to record how many plane (and what type) to a squad and their target. Also if a German fighters are hunters or escorts. If you get passed that I enjoy the game. Combat when a counter enters a square with a city, airfield or British fighters. Basically you roll a D6 on chart loses are planes not squads. Damage to cities is done by a percentage. You need to destroy the two engine factories in the first week at 100% for kick victory for the Germans or all factories 100% by week 5 I think. I rule I think is cool at weeks end 1/3 of the planes go to maintenance. Next week they come back and are added to the planes there and reinforcements. The way I used to play giving my opponent a day prior to set and play the next day. It does come with a basic game that play in an hour. A lot of book keeping but after setup its not too bad.

Am enjoying this series of videos, but really wish that when you guys are talking about each game, that you also show stills of it in play. Helps to give viewers that aren't familiar with each game, a sense of what the game is about which helps to add relevance to your comments.
@BondingWithBoardGamesRPGs7 жыл бұрын
I hear you bgm. If we don't have the box/game on set I will put a photo of the box up on the screen but my editing time is very limited so it was either don't put out the show or keep the editing time manageable. What I would recommend is popping over to BGG if a particular game grabs your attention. There you can dive deep into any specific game in order to get a since of it. I will make sure to reference BGG as a resource for further viewing and maybe add a link in the description. Bart

Part II: Blue Max by GDW was a great WWI game. Also Air Force and Dauntless by Battleline plus the expansion set was amazing to play back in the day. Got those copies in 1977 at GenCon in Lake Genieve Wisconsin..at GenCon X. Just attended GenCon L which gives you a hint how old I am. Avalon Hill picked up Air Force and Dauntless but never finished the expansion set. Also Richthofen's War, Knights of the Air so many good aviation games out there.

I wonder how B-17 compares to B-29? I picked up B-29 and played it a few times. I LOVE the narrative of “your guys”, but the game itself just wasn’t fun to me. The whole time I felt like the game was playing me: chart 1, roll the die. Then chart 2, roll the die. Which is EXACTLY what you guys are saying about B-17. So maybe I’m just not “getting” it. Haha
@ScotchTestDummies5 жыл бұрын
B-17 is chart checking very much like B-29. The original B-17: Queen of the Skies (I have not played the new one) did a great job of immersing me in the plane with the crew. When I played I felt like I was watching a great movie or reading a story about the crew. I played it unfolding. Some games are kind of normal or slow others are dramatic and heroic and some are tragic and sad. That was the magic for me. B-29 had more simulation worked in and less story. My opinion. Bart
@bazultorule37113 жыл бұрын
Very nice, and still relevant lists. My only suggestion would be for an overview of the games, it would be beneficial and add a lot to show very briefly the pieces and board. I can usually tell by a quick look at pieces/cards and board if I'd be interested. I realize you have some more in depth video and unboxing, but a brief showing would save viewers a lot of time and searching. Then if the view, and review appeals they can find if you have a more detailed video. Just my thought, well done.

Do any of you guys have an opinion of "Rhittoffins War" (spelling!), or "Wings of Glory" back with the mini's .
@gregschmittgens12627 жыл бұрын
I had Richtofen's War back in the day. Played it a lot (even got my wife to play it), but it kinda felt formulaic. Never had Wings, though I've seen it played. Don't feel the need for another money sink. I play Advanced Squad Leader. 😀
@juddvance77217 жыл бұрын
I have wings' predecessor, Wings of War. I like it and it almost made this list. It needs minis more than the cards, because the cards move too much, especially if the table gets bumped. I think Greg played with me in a big Wings of War free for all at Tornado Alley back around 2010 or so. I never upgraded my copy because it is the kind of game that is hard for me to find opponents for. Both games heavily influenced Star Wars X-Wing, which is a better game, unless you aren't into the theme. Mechanically, X-Wing is better, but I avoided it because it's a money pit, but I am happy to play other people's copy. I have Richtofen's War. Not bad, but it has been surpassed with time. Dawn Patrol did everything better. If you do go with RW, be sure to get the maneuver cards. They were in an issue of the General, it might be on BGG's files section.

I own Leviathan and most of the games you guys showed. I have the two expansions for the game as well. Wonderful but Catylist failed to support it. Too bad. And yes the facebook Pay it Forward is a wonderful place to find out of print games being given away. The only down side is if you are perceived to break the rules you are removed from the site. No discussion and only commentary is rule 11. Also they will remove games you have won if you are perceived to have violated said rules. Not very open minded or compassionate about that. Other than that the people doing the giving are truly generous and good people. Chuck has a great idea with the site and it has many in the group so the exclusion of just a few seems alright with the mods. HAMTAG you guys make my day. And thank you. Nice to see you all back! I wonder, did either of you ever try "Black Cross \ Blue Sky"? It's OOP and seriously expensive but it has an unbelievable 3D feeling to it - It's a Battle for Britain game where the planes are cardboard cutouts on special struts that simulate different heights (by actually moving the planes between strut levels) as well as inclinations (steep dive, levelled etc...) and it's played on h-u-g-e maps. Marco Arnaudo actually has a fairly extensive review of it if you'd like to take a look.

@juddvance77217 жыл бұрын
I played Air Force - Dauntless back around 1984. At least I think it was. It might have been Luftwaffe. I remember it was fun, but I don't remember anything else about it. It wasn't my copy back then I still don't have them, so I don't know how they held up the test of time. Whistling Death is one of those games if the designer was at BGG, I'd be glad to learn it, but it looks like a beast of a game and not sure I'd get it to the table enough (or at all?) to justify the cost of buying it and especially to learn it, but the game has been on my radar ever since I first learned of it years ago because I love the Corsair (that's why Corsair Leader was a bit of a letdown to me: it didn't focus enough on the plane).

Exactly. They missed the entire cream of the crop. And, solitaire games? Pffff, hard to even call those games at ALL....

Good as always, naval top list coming up next? Or maybe wargames for more than 2 people since almost all are 1-2 players
@BondingWithBoardGamesRPGs7 жыл бұрын
We've discussed the naval possibility. 3 or more players is a great idea. Thanks Apollo.

The pseudo remake of B17 QoS is Target for Today. It is out and available for purchase. I've got my copy; but have only had time to open and peruse it (full time job keeps getting in the way). Covers both B17 and B24 aircraft. www.stevenkdixon.com/tft.htm You can still get it at the "30 day post release price" of $65. Sounds expensive, but game is packed full of various manuals, aids, etc. The research that has apparently gone into this game is fairly remarkable.

I hear it's more of a sim. Any word?

I really enjoy the HAMTAG videos, you guys do a super job! Just an FYI for Bart, if you're a fan of the B-17 aircraft, the National Museum of the United States Air Force will putting one of the most iconic B-17s on display next spring after something like a 10+ year restoration project, The Memphis Belle. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5rKeICtg82rla8

Field Commander Napoleon is the best Field Commander to most it seems. And I tend to agree. The one that's underrated is the Alexander one. Which I feel is also an excellent introductory wargame. I adore both. When it comes to Air War or Naval boardgames can't say I'm a big fan. I more or less favour things pre 1900's usually.

There’s nothing bonding about strategy board games. For the simple reason being that you can’t find people who share the same gaming interests.

What? World wide V Star. There’s never been a better time. Try Vassal or one of the table simulators. You can literally play ever night. I also live in a big city with war gamers but the internet helped me find them too. Super bonding world wide style. Just look at the other commenters.
