I can only hope the Woke Joke collapses this year. It's infected all of analog gaming and it's so irritating. I wish D&D didn't have to be dethroned but I think an example needs to be made. They've done it to themselves. Thanks for the list of D&D alternatives. Let's go to Mars!

The Woke Joke is almost over. WOTC has lost touch with analog gaming. It’s all profit margins and no passion. If you look at all the up and comers there is so much passion. You can feel it in their projects.

Could be. I’m a bit biased. I love space and the idea of humans going multi planetary. So there is wishful thinking on my part.

It’s part of the “safety tools” that have been pushed for the last few years. The X card sits on the table. If you as the GM had a giant spider come after me and I’m uncomfortable with spiders or a list of anything…I pick up the card or make the X with my arms. The GM has to stop or skip past the trouble part. This is to make sure all players feel safe and welcome. Google safety tools. X card is just one.

@@BondingWithBoardGamesRPGs Ah ok. Never heard of it. I have heard of safety when it comes to sexualized content in ttrpgs, but I assumed that people would just talk about it. . I thought ‘woke’ had something to do with discrimination on a systemic level and not someone acting too sensetive about a fobia of some sort.

Did you watch the “Safety Tools I Like”? In short I’ve always used them and calling them safety tools is a misnomer. Maybe even a co-opting of what I consider great tips for organized ttrpg’s. A Session Zero so everyone is on the same page, a movie rating (PG-13 for my table) and the “door is always open” so if snakes, spiders or clowns are a no go zone the person is free to leave. TTRPG’s are one of the safest ways you could spend your leisure time. No Safety Tools required. The X Card, Lines & Veils, Fast Forward and a few others are Safety tools I hate and can’t imagine any GM using them.

It seems to me that techniques you like to use aren’t “safety tools” because you use them, and the ones you don’t like are safety tools cuz you don’t like them. Just like anything some ppl don’t like is therefore “woke.” Like you, perhaps. As a veteran, cop, and someone with medical training (thank you for your many years of service), I’d hope you’d be more aware of and compassionate toward ppl who’ve experienced trauma and the many things that could trigger it, even a story being told around a game table. How embarrassing for you.

You’ve been a subscriber for 13 years. Thank you for that. I hope you stay on. I have many friends that I don’t agree with on many topics. Heck I would argue those are some of the best kinds of friends. My point on the tools I use is that lots of ttrpg gamers have used them for decades before anyone heard of “safety tools” for games. It was odd when the word safety tools started popping up in regards to games. Then I noticed stuff under that description which had been used for decades and some stuff that I couldn’t imagine being used. Doesn’t that seem odd. Maybe my job and past jobs are part of my problem. Those jobs require safety tools. Vests and guns. I’ve seen some action and the idea of not feeling safe at a game table is foreign to me. I’ve played maybe once or twice with someone who was maybe imbalanced or possibly under the influence. Even then I didn’t feel unsafe. But the idea that a player could tell the GM to pause because he is uncomfortable with snakes and then ask to fast forward past them doesn’t respect all the other players involved. And it’s all make believe. I’ve had to push through fear and doing so makes you braver not less afraid. That’s the secret. Kind of like talk therapy. If I was afraid of snakes I could use what the GM did to help get over my fear.
