Golly, Dr. Romi did a fantastic job on Lucy. Three surgeries and Romi kept Lucy alive. Great job, Dr. Romi!

I had a cat that ended up with a hematoma, and had surgery for it. Her ear ended up looking crumpled(cauliflower ear). She was around 10yrs old when it happened, and lived for another 9 yrs until she passed away :( . Amazing cat, and I miss her so much.

4:45 this is why anesthesiologist are some of the highest paid and expensively insured types of physicians. The risk when putting patients under Anastasia is really high. The room for error … an effective dose and a dose that can result in death or other serious complications are very small…much closer than the vast majority of medications. My dog Sienna is an 11 year old pit/lab mix and she is covered with those benign lipomas. More are growing all the time. The vet has assured me they are benign but with more growing all the time it still causes me a ton of worry.

Interesting that there were 3 different versions of the surgery for ear hematomas 😊

Yeah, it really depends on the breed/species, how far forward or back it is in the ear, and the vet. But there are different techniques that all pretty much have the same result.

I’d always clear up an otitis externa first before operating on an aural hematoma because of the risk of recurrence due to itchiness of an otitis. Also, in the first case of this video, the hematoma developed only the previous day, so you could give it bit of time to resolve by itself after clearing up the otitis. In many cases you don’t even need to drain aural hematomas, and -in my experience - not every dog develops a cauliflower ear as a consequence of aural hematoma…

Wow are you a vet? This is great info! Also what if the dog is distressed and itches in that area, is shaking and uncomfortable?

@@meghasinghania1 yes, I’m a vet as well 😊 They usually get a head bandage after surgery for a couple of days and a cone or collar after that, until the stitches are taken out approx 10 days post OP. Most heal really well. Recurrent inflammation of the ear canal is often much more of an issue…

My understanding was that the hematoma was discovered after a trip to the groomers.. theres no indication on when it actually formed.

I do not understand why Australia has this policy of doing surgery on aural hematoma. When my dog had one my vet just prescribed steroids and it shriveled right up. I’m sure we could have done something to keep her ear hanging straight, but it was so much cheaper and less stressful on her.
@KatieKelly27
@KatieKelly27 9 ай бұрын
Steorids don't always solve the problem, and also steroids can be really heavy on a pet's body! Surgery is better in my point of view, also the technique to flatten out the surface with buttons or special suturing technique is more likely to prevent this heamatoma to happen.
