Somalia had Eretrian for hundreds of years. One of them I Know a lady 75 years now had 4 generations of family there. They are of course completely Somali now. We also had many who came in the 70s to 80s who received great help with open arms, because they fled from Mengistu Haile Mariam. Siad Barre helped Eretria in their fight against Ethiopia and the rest is history.

This was awesome and must hearken back to a liberal society rich in arts and culture - probably right before the Islamic fundamentalists that now plague Somalia came to the forefront and regressed the nation several decades.
@ayb1470 Жыл бұрын
Somalia was never a Liberal country. Even before the civil war, Somalia was very much Conservative and socialist. This isn't the space to spew your hate for Islam.
@gsup45 Жыл бұрын
@@ayb1470 How is speaking about Islamic fundamentalists and their impact on a country equivalent to spewing hate for Islam? Is Somalia better off due to these fundamentalists? You're ridiculous with that. Sit down.
@ayb1470 Жыл бұрын
@gsup45 because your comment is absolutely nonsense. The civil war occurred because of tribalism and political motivations, it had nothing to do with Islamic fundamentalism. The problem in the country now is one that was created due to a power vacuum spanning over 25yrs and the irony is that there weren't any fundamentalist issues in somali until the early 2000s when America started involving itself in somali elections and I'm sure you won't be surprised that during that same period it was already invading and destabilising Iraq and Afghanistan. The problem in Somalia is geopolitical that is being masked as a religious issue. I think I would know more about my own country than someone who only knows from what he sees on TV where the agenda is already set.
@gsup45 Жыл бұрын
@ayb1470 First of all, I never positioned myself as an expert on Somalia. I said "must hearken back." That was obviously a speculative statement and was based on extrapolation from information available to me. I can freely accept that you know more about Somalia because you're from there. That being said, I'm not a low-information person. I'm very well-read geographically speaking, studied and wrote detailed dissertations on world history on a variety of countries, and have friends from several countries to include every single country in East Africa. My maternal grandfather was a career diplomat and the former Nigerian ambassador to the United States. My mother and her siblings grew-up and went to school in many of the countries he was posted to including Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Germany. While I accept your premise that Islamic fundamentalism might not constitute the majority of the cause of the conflict in Somalia, it is playing a negative role today in the conflict and several others around the world. It can be oppressive and is oppressive in Somalia. Although I'm Christian, half my family is Muslim on my Father's side and the other Christian. I'm definitely not Islamaphobic. I support a number of issues around the world that affect both Muslims and Christians like the Palestinian issue for example. I'm fully aware of the US being 100% unfair on many issues and speaking out of both sides of its mouth. I don't however believe Islam or any other religion has a place in ruling any country or telling its people what to do. Every government should be secular and let its people follow whatever religion they deem apt.
