Frogs were quite common test subjects for this type of new technology, it seems. Perhaps the fact that most people who would have any way of interpreting the results would already be somewhat familiar with the anatomy of frogs helped?

In German we call x-rays "Röntgenstrahlen" (Röntgen Rays). But only now realised the reason for the different words is probably that his name is so damn hard to pronounce for English speakers ^^ But I still don't know what the x stands for
@IsYitzach8 жыл бұрын
If Wikipedia is to be believed, Rontgen called it x-radiation for an unknown radiation. Basically, x is place holder that never got replaced.
@Kaneanite8 жыл бұрын
Wilhelm Rontgen named the radiation he discovered X-radiation to signify it as an unknown type, over time it was shortened to X-ray and the name just stuck.

Yeah, I heard this story too. It seems likely, many scientists did that with for example planets and animals.

@chai__tea8 жыл бұрын
It's true, these videos do a great educational work. I love going to museums, but I can also put myself into your shoes, because the way things are presented in museums can often be improved, I think. Whenever you go to a museum, try to find someone, who knows a little more about the exhibits than you do. A friend who's been there before or the one who recommended it to you. I find it so inspiring to have somebody point out the really outstanding exhibits or tell me little extra stories they know, because that goes a long way... compared to just reading the signs one by one. No one ever comes close to Keith, tho! ;-)

Victor Dalloz Yeah, I assumed it had something to do with Sir Martyn, but I am wondering how "Hi, I'm Brady, I film videos with the Professor" went to "Let's make a KZbin channel with regularly uploaded videos, Keith and James."
@ragnkja8 жыл бұрын
The first video Brady did at the Royal Society were with Sir Martyn in the library of the RS. I think Keith makes an appearance in at least one or two of them (he definitely appears in a later, but still pre-Objectivity video), so filming in the RS with Professor Poliakoff, as his title was at the time, seems to have been the most likely way for our two stars to have met.

@Muonium18 жыл бұрын
It probably wasn't THAT bad. At the time these images were taken apparatus was very rudimentary, the Coolidge tube hadn't been invented yet, they only had very VERY inefficient Crookes tube to generate X-rays. The very long exposure times were necessitated by the very weak source of x-rays they had to work with.

5 minutes exposure with Hard Roentgen radiation with no shielding and a probably large amount of backscatter from a prototype X-ray kenotron valve, also unshielded and probably unfocused, powered by a small megavolt tesla/oudin magnifying oscillation transmitter coil or at the very least an induction coil of about 500KV. The output in either REM, RAD, Sievert or Roentgen would be enough exposure to cause cellular damage and possibly be carcinogenic. Poor Lord Salisbury.

Actually, it's with a 'g' as in 'good'! May I suggest another English vocalization: Rurnt - gann (the 'u' sounds as if an 'r' would follow. But don't pronounce the second 'r', I just put it there for the sound of the 'u'.
