John Fedchock is one of the greatest trombonists on earth. I dont care what anyone says, his chops just never quit ever!

I played in a 9 piece horn band with John at Ohio State in the late 70's. I'll never forget the first time I heard him play the melody of this arrangement. Brilliant!

It's a combination of things - using the natural breaks in the range of the intrument combined with what we call doodle tongue. He's got plenty of endurance, and he's mastered that technique, but I find the people (Fontana, Watrous, etc) don't have the projection that I like to hear. It's just another to play though, and if you can do it, it's all good.

i hear some serious grit in the trumpet soloist's chops, but i think he might be going for that on purpose... he's got some really nice licks in there, IMO.

@shizohal That's Barry Ries on trumpet. Among the unsung Jazz heros on the faculty of the University Miami Jazz program, he may be the one of the greatest living trumpet players. Definitely right up there with wynton, maynard and randy brecker. You should see him play trumpet and drums at the same time!!!
@stevenhogenson48804 жыл бұрын
RE: Ries -- Ah, no. Not on par with Wynton, Maynard and Brecker...not based on this video. Maybe this was a bad day for him but while he's got ideas and fingers, sound is poor and range seems pretty limited.
@ericschultz65393 жыл бұрын
@@stevenhogenson4880 Uncomparable. His playig has nothing to do with those 3. He has BETTER ideas than the 3 technicians cited above, but not as much chops. Let's say he is comparable with … Dave Douglas…
