Playing Bonelab as someone who is VERY familiar with the controls of BWs I think definitely adds to the "the game feels much shorter" thing. I do think they should have tried to 1up the campaign. Knowing players would be more experienced should have fueled them to go "bigger." Although it being mostly geared to Q2 it makes sense that they wouldn't want to overwhelm new players.
@LegendDari

It's a pretty delicate balance. Bonelab is definitely more restrained and Half-Life Alyx feeling because of what you said, like, they anticipate a lot of VR/Boneworks newcomers to enter and they already knew that a larger and less linear scope for levels would have been disorienting. Speaking in the moment without considering what's realistic or objectively the best in game design, I feel like they should add larger and more veteran-oriented post-game levels, like maybe a slightly harder/involved micro campaign for people who already know what they're doing. They were getting somewhere with Ascent, so if they did more of that, it'd go a long way towards making the campaign feel more substantial.

Tbh i think the next bone game will be the perfect one. We have Boneworks that was known for it's story. Now we have Bonelab that is known for it's gameplay and mod support. All we need now is the 3rd one to include a great story, great game play mod support and Online. Also the music part where they make even more memorable bangers. It's just crazy how Bonelab has been out for half a year now and we can go to San Andreas, fly helicopters and Jet's now, online is W.I.P. Makes me excited for what's to come for in the next 6 months. Like this game has given me the perfect time to say a sentence i never thought i'd ever say in my entire life. Bonelab has allowed me to play as Adam Smasher from Cyberpunk, to fly a helicopter, in grand theft auto San Andreas, with Andrew Tate and Samus Aran, whilst holding a Golden Desert Eagle.

Games with modding support are truly glorious. And I agree, the next bone game might be a lot better off now that they don't need to worry as much about the modding framework and such. They can just do a basic R&D cycle for cool new features and make a campaign that'll satisfy most people.

SLZ has already said that after bonelab they want to move on to making games that are less “proof of concept” type experiences. Their next one could be a VR physics game that just uses physics as the medium to tell a more unique story with more specific mechanics, which will be awesome. Imagine literally any other triple A VR game but with bonelab’s level of physics.

Honestly i agree with most of this the thing is (for me at least) Boneworks having leviathan sized levels was FUN for me, it was incredibly cool to feel like a person breaking out of a matrix, an ant breaking from it's colony. Bonelab is fun, it improves and adds upon EVERYTHING Boneworks had, except the campaign and story. The story Boneworks had was amazing, it was less of "hey go do whatever you want lmfao" and more of "Discover the dark secrets of this world, and feel like a badass doing it." i would've gladly waited another year for Bonelab if it's campaign was as good as Boneworks! Overall Bonelab IS better, it's just lacking in the storyline and campaign department. While modded levels can give you that same Boneworks feel, as a quest user you don't find many genuinely good Bonelab levels or mods really. It also kinda sucks we didn't get a Boneworks port for quest, although that would've been incredibly hard for stress level zero to do it's still a little disappointing and Bonelab being an improved version of Boneworks, it would've just added onto the Boneworks campaign!
@LegendDari
@LegendDari Жыл бұрын
You got good points fam and you have my respect. The campaign should have included a lot more Boneworks type levels instead of being a literal rollercoaster of minigames the entire time. A lot of the things in the SLZ universe are touched on and expanded in Bonelab, but it's all so subtle and requires a lot of homework and study, so it wasn't as cool or accessible as Boneworks.

Boneworks levels really aren't as big as people seem to be remembering them. Sure, they're gigantic compared to bonelab's story levels but compared to many other games, the levels take no time to get through unless you're going out of your way to check every nook and cranny in the levels.

Bonelab isn't really a Boneworks V2, its more of a Boneworks V1.3. It doesn't feel like many things changed. It added some more features, but failed to execute them correctly to fit the actual game. I think calling one of them better than the other isn't true or fair, as it feels like they are supposed to be different games. Bonelab is more focused on the sandbox, and Boneworks is more focused on creating an incredibly atmospheric story where you are your own John Wick in your own world. I personally prefer Boneworks but i dont think either of them are better than the other, i think they are both good for different types of people.

Boneworks slaps but its modding scene needed a breakthrough if it was going to get more interesting than Ford NPCs and FNAF avatars imo. There's obviously amazing things like the 7-11 map and custom guns and grenades, and even a "backport" of the go-kart but all of that took years to achieve. Another thing thats good about bonelab is that they are still updating and improving things. I doubt its true but I've seen some people saying they might add more campaign. I doubt it would happen due to how long it takes to make thing like that but even without that the game has so much more to do Edit: now that a year has passed and I know so much more about the game, and boneworks. I gotta say, seeing the launch for this game now was bad. With patch 4 they definitely improved many things that were originally wrong. I just hope stress level zero improves all the issues bonelab had. (and doesn't increase the price)

I agree with most of your points. I felt that longer/more levels would be good and a bit more direction in some (Im talking about when you first enter the lab and before they moved the map in the moon level). Also I think boneworks was laggy cause it didnt have a system to only render what you see like bonelab does. Music in boneworks was more calm while bonelab had more energy. When you pointed out the specific songs I laughed cause all of them where the ones Ive specifically put in my music playlist. With the mods, boneworks didnt natively support them so I kinda get things being easier to mod in bonelab. I tried making a mod once in boneworks and quit cause I couldnt figue it out lol. Honestly I cant wait till that one project to add boneworks campaign into bonelab comes out to mess around in the levels while not being a ford clone
@Nullnon_

I agree with almost every point here, really well said! I think that people giving criticism haven't tried creating mods themselves. The increase in documentation, tools, and just interest in Bonelab in general has allowed more people to actually start modding for themselves. Sure we may not have the best tools at the moment, but it sure as hell is easier than modding Boneworks.

arguing that a soundtrack is better to listen to outside of the game is the weirdest argument that i have ever heard. maybe bonetones isn't as good as labjams standalone, but that doesn't make labjams a better soundtrack. in the context of the game, boneworks runs laps around bonelab's soundtrack. you also listed bonelab's "fun core gameplay pieces as shooting, interacting with npcs, puzzles, and exploring," all of which boneworks did. you also listed things that bonelab does as "highly polished" despite the janky climbing, the terrible moon base level and pillar climb levels, the longrun puzzle not working for some people on release (including me), and the sdk that is still in beta to this day. another thing listed was how you liked custom avatars. they are cool, but (the base ones) are unbalanced and underused to such an extent that i would call them a weakness. the strong avatar is weaker than the heavy avatar, the fast avatar is slower than the tall avatar, and every other avatar is never needed in the campaign.
@LegendDari
@LegendDari Жыл бұрын
Music is music. I think both in game and out of the game Bonelab hits harder, and like, speaking from the point of someone who purchases game OSTs sometimes, I think it's pretty valid to argue the extent of the use I got out of listening to them independent of the game. I think because of Bonelab's soundtrack there's a lot more high points that stuck with me. My Control was really hype going into the campaign shooting and solving puzzles, Fistfight Fugue kept things rolling as you brawled in city streets, Turn Around really kept the momentum going into the end of the game alongside having the go-kart, Back to the Lab gave the Ascent a good sense of urgency and importance, and Don't Fence Me In was an amazing way to cap off what was mostly a pretty amazing experience. And for sure, Boneworks does everything Bonelab does too, thats kind of the point of a sequel, to like, do a similar thing and improve on it? Not to sound overly confrontational though. I just think overall Bonelab feels better to play than Boneworks. For the sake of unnecessary comparison, you're kind of saying something like "why should I play the new super mario bros when all the jumping and platforming is on the NES game?" It's true, but I think the jank and age of Boneworks shows a lot more now that I've played Bonelab. There's definitely some pretty poorly received levels-- I was VERY lucky to get Pillar Climb on my first try on release. Those boids sounded like a pure concentrated dosage of awfulness back when they changed your avatar. And I can feel for the longrun bug because it happened to one of my friends and I can see that being really frustrating. Moon base on the other hand was obviously meant to be a breather and give you some sandbox time, which I guess people didn't want during the campaign (which is fair, honestly) but other than the slower movement and no launch pads on release, it wasn't that bad of a level. Some avatars are pretty worthless (like Light, what use do they realistically have other than in the go-kart level), and they're a bit under-utilized in the campaign, but also I believe having the option to not use them and do things your own way is in the spirit of Boneworks/Bonelab. Heavy is stronger than Strong, but also he's big, bulky and slow, so that doesn't make him ideal in every situation you'd need strength. Tall is faster because of their leg length, but also they're really frustrating to use at times and so having a normal sized avatar that moves fast feels better most times. Trying to balance for what they had probably was a daunting task, and one they honestly could have done better, but also I think independent of the campaign they have their strengths and weaknesses, and thus had some amount of use in most people's playthroughs. Ultimately, I still think the feature's presence is an improvement over Boneworks.

I feels its weird trying to say one is better than the other overall. They are pretty clearly trying to do different things. Bonelab is a standalone adventure first and sandbox second while bonelab does the opposite. I do think bonelabs campain suffers from that aproach but so does its sandbox shine brighter because of it. I also think boneworks did level design way better. Warehouse in boneworks is honestly a very small map but it does so much with that space while i feel bonelabs insistance on being liniar makes it hold back its best strength being the physics was practical to use in the levels.

I really liked your review and I would like to add some of my opinions with the game. Boneworks's campaign was not the same length as Bonelab. Bonelab's campaign was so short, I beat it in an hour, and I was so disappointed when I beat the campaign. I remember saying, "wait…THAT'S IT???". I replayed both games campaigns and I played Boneworks for 3 hours and Bonelab with 1 hour. The combat was too easy in Bonelab. In Boneworks you actually had to put effort into killing a Nullbody unarmed, but in Bonelab you can easily beat enemies with very few punches. I agree with your criticism of how the car and avatars were underused, and also agree that you could just beat levels with one avatar. The music for both are fucking amazing and I agree that Bonelab's OST is better. Like the track playing while you get pulled up by Jimmy was so good and the other tracks you mentioned were and are so good. The only problem was that they were on loop at some levels and got a bit annoying listening to the same song until you finish a level. Boneworks had fantastic mods, but still I agree Bonelab has so much better and many more mods. Also the performance for Bonelab was so much better. Gun play for Bonelab was a tad bit worse due to the weird recoil on pistols and such, but still it was really good. Im not going to whine about the price cus its such a small change. At the end of the day they are both really REALLY fucking good games and I have so many hours on both but I was still disappointed with Bonelab. Love your content and mods (i fucking love ror2). Keep it up! :)

I think you hit all the main points and I completely agree. Boneworks told the story and introduced the mechanics. Which also showed the devs the interest in mods. So the devs being caring and not corporate slaves gave us more what what they thought we wanted which was mods and sandbox because everyone loves sandbox. At least I do but some people get mad if they don't get everything they want in one game. And other just want to be told a story instead of play a game. Sandbox is the boundless core of any game and if you know how to use it can be quite enjoyable endlessly the real limit is your own imagination. With bonelab I think they gave us the best game ever made. A game where we are not only aloud but encouraged to play as whoever we want with whatever gun or weapon we want against who we want and where we want with no limit you honestly couldn't ask for anything better. Most vr games don't ever scratch the surface of what bonelab has. And people complain instead of thank the devs it's gonna send a bad signal and bam we are right back to the role playing in game purchasing loot box battle royal corporate shit hole style of gaming.

I don't think SLZ is perfect-- the silent treatment that they're giving the community is pretty uncool, and the complaints from the community about that are justified. Otherwise, I think they did make a solid game and should be proud; it's one of the best games of all time for me. People have their right and reasons to complain, but I think there's too much negativity because people overhyped things a bit too much. Had to make this video because it felt like all people did was complain, which I mean, power to them, but it's not like we got a launch-day No Man's Sky.

I really like Bonelab, within the first 30 mins to an hour of playing it, I was already pretty good at the basic controls. That made Boneworks much shorter compared to the reviews I saw online, even though I was trying to take my time and see everything there was to see, it was still only 4 hours and 30 mins on my first playthrough. The extra $10 for Bonelab is definitely worth it, especially since Labworks is basically Boneworks but inside Bonelab for no extra cost. Optimization is a huge upgrade from Boneworks, and makes Bonelab feel much better, and more enjoyable. With the body log, I don't use it that much, I just think that strong is a good avatar for the things that I like to do, whether that is to fly a helicopter, smash in a nullbody's head with a sledgehammer, and doing some light parkour, he is pretty good. The soundtrack just has so much variety to it, if I could see how long I've listened to Labjams since I found out about it, it could easily be over 100 hours in total. I don't dislike Boneworks, I just think it's old and outdated, which is what Brandon Laatsch (One of the founders of Stress Level Zero) wanted. I think that the $40 dollars that I spent on Bonelab was very much worth it. I got it day one and I am still playing to this day. Love the video you made, and have a great one!

I remember back in the days of Boneworks, people would call it the Half-life 2 of VR. I believe that Bonelab is the Garry's Mod of VR. I don't like the argument between which one is better, they're both good in their own way and both have insane amounts of gameplay to go through, yes you are right Boneworks doesn't have the exact same replay ability while still being fun but that is essentially the exact same with a story driven game such as Half life 2. I myself have played Half life 2 multiple times and keep finishing it, the same with Boneworks because I still enjoy the story and going through all of it. However as a Quest 2 user I enjoy just picking up the headset, opening up Bonelab and relieving all my stresses of the day in what I believe to be better sandbox maps than Boneworks has to offer. For those that don't want to read the whole pharagraph, they're both good in their own way.

Thank you, I feel the exact same way. I had completely stopped watching bone lab content at a point, simply because of the misplaced hate from people who steam rolled the campaign, downloaded a 11000% save file and left it in thier library to collect cobwebs. I have spent 211 hours in boneworks, and 151 in bonelab, and i've loved every second of it. I guess I'm just glad someone loves the game as much as i do. : )

Loved this video, and bonelab! There's a weird amount of gatekeeping with this game, where people who have good PCs keep telling people who don't to play boneworks because its better? I can't do that man 😂 and as a result I had nothing to compare, and had much more fun with bonelab than they did. Moral of the story is to just let people enjoy things, especially if the alternative is not as easily accessible

Boneworks fans have some weird elitism, and they're seemingly almost obsessed with simultaneously bullying people who aren't like them whilst also kind of pulling them into their community. They need to sort their priorities and be a little less mean 'bout it. I agree though, let people play what they want.

Do all the enemies in Bonelab act and move like slow moving zombies stoned out of their mind who prefer standing still, or are there already some faster/normal moving ones like you'd see in COD game or Fallout or literally anything else? I'm planning to buy Bonelab maybe today or tomorrow for my standalone headset but I assume at the very least the new programmable mods will introduce this.

Ok I agree with this, but the campaign part I fully disagree with. It’s kind of dumb to say that it’s “too long”. Also, the bonelab campaign, (which I played first) took me around 2:00 and boneworks took me around 5:30 or so. However yeah I agree with all the other points. (Also the people downloading 100% part,) looking for small balls in levels should not be 90% of the whole game
@LegendDari
@LegendDari Жыл бұрын
Not to come off as combative, but looking for ammo crates and putting capsules in trash bins to carry to the end of the level also shouldn't be 90% of the game, either. Both games have a weird collectable end-game filler content thing, but I feel that encourages exploration in otherwise straightforward levels. I will definitely own up and say that I should have made it more obvious that I was speaking more anecdotally and non-objectively about the length of the campaigns. Also just linearity and length are pretty subjective things, so I don't think I can really argue hardcore on which would objectively be the better campaign. I personally just enjoyed Bonelabs more, really.

Some things I would love to see later in the game is a way better leg system because the leg system is absolute garbage. Oh yeah and this game is said to be getting an amazing multiplayer mod for quest and PCVR with cross platform support.

Boneworks is good for people who love really good gameplay and a really fun campaign and story, and Bonelab is for people who like a good sandbox. (Boneworks has a really good sandbox mode too.) I personally perfer Boneworks over Bonelab because Bonelab's campaign is garbage. But people seem to think that Boneworks has strict limits, as you stated in the beginning. But it just depends on the person playing the game. The avatar thing isn't a big feature at all like many people seem to think. It really just allows you to change a few basic stats. Which is cool, but not a huge feature by any means. Other than that, the physics being "improved" is a bit misleading. They feel like they were changed rather than improved. By that i mean one way feels different, the other way feels different, one isn't necessarily better than the other. And the campaign in Boneworks is alot more open-world and expansive. It gives you those wow moments whenever you step into a new area. Where as Bonelab's campaign feels more straight forward and strict. It gives you no freedom, and the levels feel tight and small. This is why i personally perfer Boneworks.

The audience doesn't know who acrid is, so it'd come off as a bit out of place to say "playing as Acrid" to people who're watching a video that likely only really know just Bonelab and Boneworks, and don't know what Risk of Rain is. I believe I gave all the avatars a similar treatment, not really naming them but just describing them.

I've been playing boneworks for a while and I'm genuinely disappointed in BoneLab ngl. The gunplay felt weird, and the Mp5 SMG (No stock) still feels fucked. As I've played more of bonelab I've gotten used to it but that problem is still there. When I first played bonelab and got thrown into the menu area, I was confused at first till I stumbled up the stairs, I recognised I needed to do something with the crane but it was always stuck inside itself. I'm fine with the level length, it's understandable especially since they wanted to put it onto the Quest, if there were a few PC only levels I'd be more happy.

I think bonelab is quite good, it's just some campaign maps seem very unpolished, like parts of descent. I wish bonelab would have a way to change graphics on quest standalone. I also wish you could get any mods, instead of some being pcvr only, because I have been spending two weeks to try to change ragdoll player mod, bonelib, and melon loader code so it would work somewhat on standalone, but the problem is that it won't let me download anything I changed in Mobile vr station.

Listen, I would like Bonelab if its campaign was good and if they didn't completely get rid of bhopping and make super jumps next to impossible to do. I just want old Boneworks speedruns back. Especially with Fusion, I've started liking the game at least a little more. A Bonelab with a longer and non-linear campaign would be good for 99% of the player base, I would like it 10x more, but still, I just want speedrun strats back. Bonelab doesn't really improve on anything either. It's literally like 50 percent mods. Not to mention, Stress Level Zero has been so busy counting their cash that they won't even give us a single real update. I feel like most Boneworks fans would be happy and fine if they gave us some new levels like Hover Junkers, or the Redacted Chamber. I don't see why Stress Level Zero isn't giving us any updates. Edit: I guess you could say is that you find Boneworks boring because it has a slightly worse sandbox, I still enjoy it because I like speedrunning it. Edit 2: Ok, I am done with this video, during the music section, my guy put "put it down" in the memorable Bonelab music section when it is just a worse version of "pick it up". I don't like the Bonelab OST because it is: 1. not nostalgic. I played Boneworks once and immediately felt nostalgic, 2. almost all songs have vocals, which doesn't really fit with the Monogon theme at all, 3. very, very repetitive, I remember playing that one runoff rip off and hearing that guy scream into my ears the same thing over and over while I waddled my way through the linear walking simulator. Bonelab OST has some really good songs, but it does not compare to Bonetones and the simple yet nostalgic melodies. You need to watch Goldpro's video on why Bonelab is worse.
