I've never seen a bass player do so much open string work.

I think the open string adds a lot to the "chug" of the riff. This was actually the previous bassist's (Giffo's) line which he recorded in the studio shortly before he quit the band. Not sure if Bones just had to pick it up by ear, or if maybe Jim (guitarist) had watched (and listened) and remembered it or what.

So for the uneducated, what do you mean by “open string”
@MacbthPSW9 ай бұрын
@@philjones8609 An "open string" is when the string isn't fretted, or pressed down to the fretboard with the left hand (for a right-handed bassist like Bones) while it's plucked or picked with the right hand. It's the lowest pitch of note that string can make, and usually has a different quality to the sound than all the fretted notes up the string. Sometimes it's looked down upon, especially because some beginning bassists rely too much on open strings as they're easiest to play. But it can also be used skillfully to allow distinct sounds not possible otherwise.

@@MacbthPSWThank you so much! So, I do see him creating the different “ chords” or “ notes” with his left hand, though…? Am I right? You are certainly nice enough to educate me on this, and I appreciate it!! Just trying to understand! Thank you very much!
