Steve Allen was brilliant... My parents let me stay up late to watch his shows!

I don't know if it is said below, but the singer of Hub Kapp and the Wheels was actually Pat McMahon - one of the characters on the Wallace show (he was Gerald and Auntie Maude, and also a well known Phoenix TV host later on). Mike Condello was a guitarist also on Wallace and Ladmo a lot but that was more during the later 60s. And to the poster below who mentions Elton Duck, I recorded the demos that got them the Arista Record deal. I didn't know the guys but they came to my Holywood studio, and I just happened to be a Phoenix kid who knew all about Mike.

Mike Condello was good at doing satires of songs. But, he was also a serious musician & song-writer as well. Too bad his band, Elton Duck, got screwed over by Clive Davis & Sony Arista records in 1980. Out of what would have been their debute self-titled album. Just cause Clive Davis hated the name of the band. And the band members (Mike Condello, Mike McFadden, Andy Robinson, & Michael "Micki" Steele - the Bangles) refused to release the album under an assumed name. Citing that doing so, would have guaranteed the failure if the album with their fans. So Clive Davis had the album shelved. Mike Condello died via suicide in 1995. May he be resting in peace knowing the scholarship fund that bears his name is helping alot of students to study music. If anyone who reads this post knows anyone who suffers from depression/thoughts of suicide, or if anyone reading this post does. Please seek help. Nothinging is soo bad that a, "permanent solution to a temporary problem" , needs to happen.

No, this is Pat McMahon as Hub Kapp. Alice Cooper's early band was called The Earwigs.

A mix satirizing '50s rock (Hub's hair, clothes, moves, and the song itself) and its replacement by the Beatles in 1964 (the clothes of the backup band members, and their "bop shoo bop" refrain which is copied from the Beatles song, "Boys").

Hub Kap and the Wheels was a spoof on rock n roll. It wasn't to be taken seriously but people in Hollywood did. They just didn't get it.

Sometimes a parody band is so good musically that the listener doesn’t realize that it is a parody. The Ruttles who parodied the Beatles were musically great. Spinal Tap’s parody of “their first record,”, absolutely nailed the style of the music of 1967.

Steve Allen hated Rock and Roll. He considered it trash. Interesting, because he didn't have that opinion of Jazz which is one of the founding forms of the music that created Rock and Roll. The fact is, Rock and Roll was given that name by Alan Freed, the disc jockey from Cleveland, Ohio. Before that it was generally referred to as Rhythm and Blues or Jazz. The name Hub Kapp and the Wheels came from one of Steve Alan's ideas he used on the original "Tonight Show." He said that band names were decided upon by picking names from a hat. So, he would have two hats. In one hat was the name of the lead and in the other hat was the name of something. So, Hub Kapp and the Wheels goes along with that idea of picking names from a hat. One of the group names he pulled out of the hats was Stark Naked and the Car Thieves.

Alex Holub That's why Steve Allen would have them on his show. He got it. He understood the satire.

In Buffalo NY, there was a ‘50s rock & roll band called Big Wheelie & the Hub Caps. They released “Solid Grease” on the local Bandstand label in 1972 followed by “Bring Back the Doo Wops” on Scepter in 1973.
