My Fish Loves Me! He would rather play than eat!

This little guy just loves to watch me wherever I am in the room, he'll do anything to get my attention. And when I look at him he flares out his gills and dances from side to side just hoping that I'll come over to play. If I drop food in the aquarium he'll ignore it and hope to play. I have to walk away to get him to go find the food which has floated away by then. That said, in another tank I have a second Blood Parrot Cichlid that loves me but doesn't want to be touched. It's like having one dog and one cat. You just have to love the differences.

They're a pretty aggressive fish. I have 2 in a 40 gal tank and they're both pretty young. The "Alpha" one would constantly bully and bruise the weaker one (his whole head and fins were black). He stopped doing it after maybe 2 or 3 weeks of being together, but rarely does it during feeding time.

No , he will not kill them. I had one of these fish in a 55 gallon tank with community fish much smaller then it and there were no problems. I named mine Sherbet and gave him or her never knew which it was, and gave Sherbet a house , I just called it Sherbet's house , It was just aquarium decor big enough that could be used as a cave , which they like. If the bottom feeders or algae eaters got into Sherbet's little house he/she just pushed them out. Mine also liked to be touched. Sherbet was no bigger then a 50 cent piece when I got him/her and grew to be as big as this guy's, and lived a very long life. Never ever had any problems with Sherbet harming any of the other fish.

He is very much alive and in great health as of 6/18/2016! It's hard to clean the aquarium as he always wants to play. Heck, it's hard to get anything done in the room because he's always acting out to get me to come over to the aquarium. A long time ago, I changed my view of "animals" in general. I was snorkeling in Hanama Bay, HI, and was mobbed by different fishes in seconds. They were there for the tourist handouts, for sure, but I saw what one would clearly see in any other schooling, flocking, herd animals on land: Intelligence and awareness of each other and of other species. Some were more friendly than others, and some were outright protective of the many small reef sharks that would zip by occasionally. They would be driven off by numbers. Some would simply be curious and would groom the hairs on my arms, swim up close to my mask to look into my eyes. Others tolerated petting and touches. No question about it: fish are smart. They live long lives and are social. Why wouldn't they be smart?

It's actually very common in fish keeping, I think the general public is giving fish less credit than it deserves. A lot of fish are also quite intelligent and can easily recognize their owners and differentiate different humans, and also learn tricks they'll remember their entire lifetime. But of course different species of fish have different level of intelligence and consciousness. A wrasse is intelligent enough to have self awareness (there's a lab experiment on this), a cichlid can be affectionate like the fish in the video (which is a parrot cichlid), different betta fish have very strong individual personality, very curious of their surroundings and can easily learn tricks, but sadly most people put these active and intelligent bettas in a vase or a bowl that made them a depressed and inactive stationery floating fish. Other species like tetras and rasbora are more simpler minded and less interactive but their simpler intelligence and instinct are still impressive.

We now have recording equipment that can detect an incredible variety of vocalizations they make, shedding some light on how they communicate in various social settings. This is the reason I got a blood parrot. And mine is just so darling! He likes to pretend to bite my fingers off, and then kisses it better after. He pretends he’s aggressive, but he’s a softy! Haha 😂!! Oh and one night I was having a horrible panic attack, I was sobbing and he just stared at me with his face pressed against the glass and did his little dance that I taught him (he bobs from side to side, almost like he’s shaking his head “no”) to cheer me up!! It was so sweet and helped me calm down after the panic attack. One of my favorite pets I’ve ever owned!! ❤️🥰 🐡❤️
