In the words of (imho) greatest (but unfortunately now pretty old) Sifu Gary Lam (Wong Shun Leung Lineage) Bong Sau is helping hand and in 99% of cases comes second NEVER first (except 1% "wrong" bong - "instinctive" "suprise attack" version ), proper combo for let's say One-Two (L/R direct) is Tan /Bong... Only situation (imho) when it "may" come first is against "Hay makers"... two hands on one, followed by pulling to the side/hip, and elbow in the throat/jaw/chest. People are shitting on Wing Chun for years... why? Because it's bloody difficult to master (again in the words of Sifu Gary Lam "it's not normal" i.e. it goes against all human instincts), and it's NOT a sport, your aim in Wing Chun is to kill or maim. Hence A LOT of fake Sifu's and "Masters" who get smashed by mediocre fighters. Who can blame them, when they actually rarely had a chance to TRULY apply it... (except, maybe in some really dark and murky underground tournaments in Vale Tudo style). This was invented as military program of Shao Lin, only five forms, five years of training...compared to other styles who have dozens if not hundreds of forms. Everything that is banned in let's say UFC is DESIRABLE in Wing Chun. Closest thing today to Wing Chun (imho) is Craw Maga... military, again... "third move = death" skill. I'm not a practitioner or sifu or anything, but I did practice kick-boxing in my teen years (long long time a go in a galaxy far far away), and I can see and feel the biomechanics, trigonometry and INTENTION in Wing Chun, and it's TERRIFYING.

Your raised shoulder not going to defend you from getting jabbed in the face, and it weakens the structure. It's even dangerous, you can dislocate your shoulder if it's not secured. Your bong not going to have the strength it auth to have. Your stance, your hip, your elbow should move as one unit, and shall remain as one. If you are under pressure, your shoulder will be the weakest link in your chain, and you bong is going to be useless. Try dealing with serious elbow strikes! It's going to be evident that your shoulder mobility easily translates to fragility. If you want to remain uninjured, you limit your shoulder mobility. "Heavy elbow" -> shoulder down!

Upon acquiring the fundamental knowledge, the next step is to practically apply it in a manner that suits our unique circumstances. The most effective approach to achieve this is to experiment with a diverse range of individuals and styles.

@@SifuSergey Ok, let me put my question into perspective, maybe you can answer or clarify some of the details: 1. There is no leaning back in neither Wing Chun nor Jeet Kune Do when using Bong Sao. 2. At least in Wing Chun there's no facing sideways, never. In Jeet Kune Do you never face completely off like you. 3. The wrist is never behind the ellbow in Bong Sao. It will put a lot of stress on your arm when blocking a real attack and your arm will almost certainly collaps. 4. The ellbow of your Wu Sao is too high. Any follow-up kick or knee will nicely break your left ribs. 5. Concerning "the boxers pull their hands back" - exactly that is the idea behind the Kuen Kuit stating that Bong Sao never stays. 6. Another point to make with the boxers: Of course you will get in trouble! You need to attack at the same time e. g. in your situation with a kick to the knee (ever trained the Muk Yan Jong?). 7. Everything after that (pushing with Bong Sao) is straight up wrong. Ok, let me give you the Wong Shun Leung (I hope, you know that name) idea behind Bong Sao. You try to protect your center with the forearm - the hand is on the high-line, the ellbow on the middle-line. Now, imagine the attacker somehow managed to block and/or press down your wrist (e. g. with Pak or Jut) and attacks your face., than you have nothing left to "block" than your ellbow, so the ellbow goes up and does the job of your wrist. Hence for example the Dan Chi circle. This is the most practical way of using your Bong Sao. Oh, and one more thing. Bong Sao and Wu Sao/Tan Sao is very often seen in the forms, but never applied together. It's just to save time doing forms that you do both techniques together. Except if you add a kick to it. That's when the real Wing Chun starts. Let me make one point very clear: I mean no disrespect to you and the system you teach. I just try to give some points that I saw, learned and taught the last 30+ years in Wing Chun (I started 1990). Last point: What's your system and your lineage? It would really help to put your video in context. Cheers and have a nice weekend!

@@vtmuseum hello and thank you for your comment with the informI represent the Jeet Kune Do Kim lineage, and our school participates in various MMA tournaments worldwide. We compete internationally at least four times a year in full-contact tournaments. Our representatives also compete in Muay Thai and MMA tournaments such as Pankration, and have won gold medals. Our approach is not purely traditional Wing Chun, but rather adapted for sports and MMA fights. “3. The wrist is never behind the ellbow in Bong Sao. It will put a lot of stress on your arm when blocking a real attack and your arm will almost certainly collaps.” - We always keep the second hand close to the face and on the level of the chin, because if you go into the exchange vs a boxer, you gotta make sure your hands are up. “4. The ellbow of your Wu Sao is too high. Any follow-up kick or knee will nicely break your left ribs. “ - once again, wu sao hand is at the level of your chin, especially when you are at a close range. Speaking about kicks into the ribs, it’s a matter of training skills. Kickboxers, Muay Thai, MMA fighters always cover their head and the core. You round up your spine a little and then there’ll be no problems. Of course, once again, it’s a matter of how you feel the distance and timing. Sparring, sparring, sparring will teach. “6. Another point to make with the boxers: Of course you will get in trouble! You need to attack at the same time e. g. in your situation with a kick to the knee (ever trained the Muk Yan Jong?).” - Very often use the bong sao while doing a boxing sparring with the gloves. Kicking is a great option but it’s a different topic, and again, you never kick the knee caps while practicing the boxing sparring with the gloves. “7. Everything after that (pushing with Bong Sao) is straight up wrong.” - Pushing the opponent's arm up and going into the counter to the core is always practical. Once again, thank you for sharing your Wing Chun expertise. Our perspectives on the intercepting fist differ. Here's a video of my school training from when I was young. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5CmgpmVma2tppI On top of that, I have years of experience working in law enforcement, too.
