There are three main reasons to use a bong sau, if what you are doing does not include on of those three there are better choices. *Nr1. The Yi Bong Sau (Shifting Bong Sau)* When throwing a straight punch as an attack or interception, the idea is to break though the guard and hit your opponent. The wing-chun punch is a rising one since it goes from your heart to the opponents face, which is often higher. The rising action of the punch clears the guard enough to make its way through. In case the opponent intercepts your punch and applies pressure either towards your center or downwards, you have lost access to his center with your forearm. The concept and application of bong sau here is to continue your path to his centre by shifting his line of energy using bong sau. Since bong sau is a transitional movement, as soon as a path is clear you strike with the other hand. *Nr2. Pow Bong Sau (Throwing Bong Sau)* If your hands are not up and ready and the attack comes before you are in a position to deal with it. In this case the attackers line of distance and head start in timing makes it impossible to use actions like Tan Sau, Gaan Sao or Fuk sao. The only chance you have is to intercept with the fastest possible defensive action. This is the Throwing Bong Sau which is in the second form during the stepping section. You literally throw your bong sau up and your wrist can spring above your elbow in this case. Still it is no guarantee this could not would work very well, but it is better than nothing. *Nr3. Dai Bong Sau (Lower Bong Sau)* If your opponent grabs your arm and tries to pull you off balance in order to hit you. You cannot afford to tense up since this will only aid your opponent into hitting you. You need to go with his force and actually step into his space to take his balance. Often this is done with a low crashing bong sau and punch or with a shoulder strike. There is no half intent with this movement because you have to get in close to avoid round strikes like hooks. The movement is supported by the foreward pressure of the waist and your step. There’s also the use of the lower bong sau in reason Nr2. But this time your surprise attack is to the lower body.

I'm glad you're making these videos, as it is helping Wing Chun 'grow up' for use in the modern world. Watch any videos of street guys going at it, and you will see the nature of modern fighting....and traditional WC will not help if you rely on techniques. I recently watched your video with Lyte Burly again, and I think that really brought things into focus as to how Wing Chun should be used if you are to survive a modern fight situation. Great stuff, Dom!

Thank you. We (wife and me) did Wing Chun three years in a bad school. There a Bong Sau was trained as a tool for attacks. Two years ago we found Sifu Phu who opened our eyes that this school was not worth a penny.. We left the school. :)

Good Video Izzo. I also did a KZbin video on the problems with using Bong Sao and cannot agree with you more. I think Bong Sao is great for taking photo poises. 😊

i would like to ask, is it possible to use bong sao against a swinging overhead right hand? What is the best defense and counter against a swinging overhead right hand?
@Frankie16222 жыл бұрын
Just wondering, you’ve stated that there are alternative punches in Wing Chun (like hook punches and uppercuts). Considering that pretty much every Wing Chun technique/tool is a post contact result of a failed straight punch, can the same be said about the hook punch and uppercut? Or are they a possible end result of a technique when applying Chum Kiu (so having the body begin off center and applying Jum Sau but twisting the torso and ending up hook punching)? Or the beginning of a straight punch could begin with the motion of those other punches?

Tbh I used it but only as an elbow strike. I've never thought it was actually good for defense.

So a Bong Sau is not an attack, just an after reaction(something that happened after contact).

I very much appreciate your mission for promoting real Wing Chun as opposed to so many fake masters who teach unrealistic TMA stuff. Especially, as your experience as a former cop brings in the skill of how to apply it in the street. Although far away from you, located on the Canary Islands, this German Wing Tsun teacher is on the same mission like you, and, shows his view about realistic bong sau application (as well as wrong applications), in two of his videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/baapiIt8Z917kNk / kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKTWl3xqj6yjfac Unfortunately, it's only in German, as this guy is a German teacher with a back ground as former Bouncer/Security man/Bodyguard in the Security Company of Michael Kuhr (Ex-Kickboxing Champion). He also was a student of Emin Boztepe, a Wing Tsun guy you montioned in one of your videos. Guess it would be beneficial to Wing Chun / Wing Tsun, if the different lineages would exchange their experieces and skills instead of the so often seen competition upon "who has the real true Wing Chun". I know you are way appart from this lineage wars, so maybe you kinda like the input from another Wing Chun teacher on this topic. It's not in English and with no subtitle, but I guess you can tell by the body language whether he is demonstrating his correct Bong Sau (bend by the opponents force while he tries to punch) or the incorrect one (when he shows of a posture before even in contact, also making him vulnerably for feints).

It is not my problem that people are overemotional, especially martial artists like this guy. That shocked me the most. They should display self-control, and stoic behaviour.
