JUST LIKE THAT
(Bonnie Raitt)
I watched him circle round the block,
Finally stopped at mine
Took a while before he knocked,
Like all he had was time
Excuse me, ma’am, maybe you can help,
The directions weren't so clear
I'm looking for Olivia Zand
They said I might find her here
I looked real hard and asked him
What she's got he's looking for?
Said there's somethin’ I think she’d want to know,
And I let him in the door
It’s not like me to trust so quick
Caught me by surprise
But somethin’ about him gave me ease
Right there in his eyes
And just like that your life can change.
If I hadn't looked away,
My boy might still be with me now,
He'd be 25 today
No knife can carve away the stain
No drink can drown regret
They say Jesus brings you peace and grace
Well he ain't found me yet
He sat down and took a deeper breath
Then looked right in my face
I heard about the son you lost,
How you left without a trace
I've spent years just trying to find you
So I could finally let you know
It was your son's heart that saved me
And a life you gave us both
And just like that your life can change
Look what the angels send
I lay my head upon his chest
And I was with my boy again
I spent so long in darkness,
Never thought the night would end
But somehow grace has found me
And I had to let him in

In 2010, my son died at only 4 months old and his heart gave another little baby a chance at life. This song just made me sob like I haven't done in years. I often wonder about who got his heart.

As a transplant physician, I find this beautiful song heart wrenching. The unimaginable pain of the donor families is too often forgotten. This song reminds us that with their sacrifice may come redemption and grace. By capturing all of this in a 5 minute song is art at its highest level.

As a woman whose husband was at the top of the list for a heart transplant but didn't get it, I feel the pain of this song. To EVERY family that gives life to another, through their pain, you are our heroes. I know how painful it is to lose the person you love, but you make it possible for another to get that second chance at life. Thank uou. Thank you. Thank you. Because of you, a mother sees her child grow up. A wife sees her husband live. A child will grow up with that parent who they almost lost. What a beautiful song. It made me cry and smile.

My sister was a heart transplant recipient more than 30 years ago. And it took me almost 27 years years to get the courage to find her donor family. Without knowing it, they had become part of the fabric of our family and part of our life’s story. But meeting her donor’s sister, albeit only through letters, opened my soul and filled it with with grace and compassion. This song is a gift.

Dear Bonnie, a few years ago my wife and I watched you open for James Taylor in Baton Rouge. We were mesmerized by your performance and became instant fans. My 18 year old son died on November 1, 2022, and when he was on life support we learned that he was an organ donor. Shortly after his death, Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac passed and I started to listen to her music again. Rumors has always been one of my favorite records. I ran across the song “Songbird” and cried as I listened to it imagining my son in heaven. The Monday after the Grammys, my wife told me that you performed “Songbird”. I couldn’t believe it. I went online looking for your performance, and I saw the headline that you won song of the year. I downloaded, “Just Like That”, and I openly wept as I listened to the words. I think I cried for over an hour. It was as if you wrote the song just for me and my wife. Miraculously, the same evening, I opened a letter written by a 55 year old man letting us know that he was the recipient of my son’s heart, and that he wants to meet me and my family to thank us for giving him a second chance at life. “Just like that my life changed. Look what the angels sent. Grace knocked on our door, and we let him in” Thank you Bonnie. I wish there was a way we could meet you in person to let you know how deeply moved we are by your song. As an update to my above post. My wife an I are approaching the one year anniversary of our son's death, Nov 1. We will be meeting his heart recipient in person on that day. We are so looking forward to meeting the man who received a second chance at life, even though, we will be grieving for our loss at the same time.

I received a call this morning from a friend who read your story on Facebook. Through her tears she said you knew my story. While the details are different, the story is the same. My son, Sam, died in a motorcycle accident in July of 2019 at the age of 22. Aside from traumatic brain injury, he was otherwise perfect. Sam had already chosen to be an organ donor… It was now our responsibility to walk it out. Friends and family were able to gather in his hospital room to share memories, to laugh, and to cry. Sam saved four lives with his organs… and countless more with tissue, nerve, tendon and bone donations. His gifts of life keep his life present in mine. I was able to meet Sam’s heart recipient last July… and hear his heart beating inside Jeff’s chest. Sam’s heart is strong and my mama heart is a little less broken. Thank you for this beautiful song, Bonnie. You are making a difference. ♥️

YES. My sister was fretting that our Mother was callously cut open to get her organs to those in need of transplants. My friend, an OR nurse, assured me that there is great reverence in the OR for those who can no longer live, but can give their organs so others may be able to have a new lease on life. I am one week out from my heart transplant. I cannot tell you how much this song means to me. I just heard it last night for the first time, a friend sent it to me. Yesterday was about as hard as hard can get, but after listening, and crying, I h Felt so much better. I’ve had a very successful transplant, but the physical pain, side effects from the meds has put me to the test in so many ways. I am so grateful for my new heart, I am hoping that when they are ready, I can meet my donor’s family and thank them, in the mean time I have named my heart Henry. He is a a beautiful beating trooper, and his pulse is the pulse of this song for me. Thank you Bonnie Raitt, I really needed to hear this.

I had never heard this song until a good friend sent it to me today. She and her husband had helped me so much at the time of my son's death 5 1/4 years ago from a tragic fall. We had met three of the five donor recipients (lung, pancreas/kidney, liver) four years ago (we live in CO, they live in CA). On 1/28/23 we had the honor of attending the quinceanera of our son's heart recipient. She was celebrating her 21st birthday since she was too sick at age 15 to have her quinceanera. Bonnie's song is just what I experienced when I hugged this beautiful girl for the first time - heart to heart with my son's/her heart! We met with the other three grateful recipients just this past week, and we are in touch with the 8 yo boy who was on dialysis until our son's kidney saved him. Thank you, Bonnie, for touching my heart so deeply - I am thrilled that you were honored with your Grammy for such a beautiful tribute to all who have lost a child. God bless you and CONGRATULATIONS!

Amen! My son Passed away at 28. 3 years ago. Brain bleed. Flew him to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. Covid had all the beds full here. After 3 day's on life support. It was time to let Robert go to be with Jesus. They asked my family about organ donation. At first was mad. I was in shock. His mom, my wife passed 7 years ago. Vanderbilt is a wonderful place. For Nuro. They talked to my family, and my younger son. After 2 hours. We said okay. I prayed about it. Robert would want that. He was a very kind, giving, Christian young man. Had a beautiful voice. My brother was with him, as he took his last breath. I was with him, when he took his first breath. I couldn't do it. My brother and sister- in- law. Stayed with. Him I have a wonderful family and brother. They asked me to write on a card. Tell us about Robert. Then, asked two of his favorite songs. America Trilogy, How Great Thou Art. Elvis singing . He loved Elvis Presley. After they finished there work. The doctors and Nurses lined both sides of the hallway. As rolled him down. The Honor Hallway.. a grandmother received one of his kidneys. We keep in touch. It saved her life. Then I received another letter from Tennessee Donor. Another wanted to contact us. I am writing a letter, telling her about Robert. He loved his Lord and his church. During Covid, 140 people came. Found out he did things for people, I didn't know he had done. Hope to go to North Carolina this summer to visit her. My son, gave her a se m A second chance, to be with her family. I can't wait to hug her. So glad we did this. My son is wirh Jesus and his mom. I will see them both again. God bless you each on here. I miss Robert, so much. My family too. Robert Marshall Flack. Our hero. God speed my precious son. ❤❤

This song touched my heart deeply - we lost our 22 year old nephew 12 years ago (due to alcohol and a motorcycle), even though my sister was beyond heartbroken and barely functioning she honored her son's wishes and donated all Organs, Eyes, and skin. I knew nothing about this song, until the Grammy's - I had heard that people were upset because once again Beyonce was robbed. But, I guess since it won the Grammy it was suggested to me on KZbin. I've just sat here and listened to this song 3 times in a row with tears pouring down my face! THIS SONG is what music is all about!!! It tells a story and most importantly it makes you "Feel"!!! Before auto-tune and all these other musical interventions, people could either sing or not and it was Very Apparent if they could Not! Ms. Bonnie, Thank You so very much for this absolutely beautiful song. God Bless You and Yours. 💖 🙏 💖

I am so humbled by the words of this song, Bonnie’s heartfelt delivery, and the impact it has made on so many. I’m approaching one-year post-heart transplant on March 21st. It’s hard to describe or articulate the magnitude of the decision for the donor, donor family, recipient, and recipients family. It’s instantly an act of grace, love, good will, and gratitude toward all. If it wasn’t for the donor, there would be no future life. If it wasn’t for the recipient, there would be no story of grace or its heartfelt journey ❤

In memory of Christopher Daniel Keith June 4, 1983 - Aug 7, 1990. My brothers son, my godson. His heart was donated, to another 7 year old child at that time (as well as many other organs and corneas) I have no words for the poignant timeless beauty of this song, for donor families, recipients and anyone who has lost a child. To reach in and touch the depth of that heartache so beautifully. I actually tried to write a song on the subject and was unable to ever finish it. This song is a gift.

What a beautiful song that brings tears to my eyes every time I listen. My brother received a donor heart 3 years ago, and we are thankful every day for the family who gave him life with their generosity. He has been in touch with the family through letters, but has never had the chance to let the donor's wife hear her husband's beating heart bring life back to us. Without that heart, we are sure our brother would no longer be with us. Bonnie, you and your music have been a guiding light in my life. For the ones that don't know who she is, let's learn: Bonnie Raitt (American folk singer) has won 13 Grammys since the 90s (artist since the 60s). Including album of the year with Nick of Time (I was supposed to have bought two of her albums on vinyl). And she was one of the influences for Taylor Swift's country career (and even for many artists that you should know mainly for their songwriting career - yes, she wrote that song too). Taylor was the first to stand up and congratulate her. Last year you ALL discovered Kate Bush thanks to Stranger Things. I think it's better to find out who Bonnie is. Perfect Bonnie. This song is perfect. I lost my wife in an accident at the end of 2020 and my son in an industrial accident less than a year ago. Both were organ donors. It is so hard answering all the medical questions from the Life Center immediately after the accidents but later when they send you the postcards about the life's your loved one saved or improved you feel forever connected to them. It's hard but the Life Center does a wonderful job of offering support to us left behind. Thank You.

My father received a heart from a 25 year old. He struggled with guilt that he was 69 and this young man was gone too soon. He overcame it and we got another 9 years with him before he passed away. We always wanted to thank the donor's family but they requested no contact with recipients. Organ and tissue donation is truly one of the most selfless things a person can do for another. Thank you Bonnie for this song. I have been a huge fan since Nick of Time. In case I wasn't already in awe of your storytelling, this song just leaves me speechless. Thank you!

I believe the whole point of a song is to evoke emotion. It doesn’t matter what type of emotion. Bonnie certainly did that with this brilliant, emotional, poignant story. I’m a fan of music of all genres and keep up with the latest. It surprised everyone at last night’s Grammy Awards when Bonnie won “Song of the Year” - not me. That song did exactly what music is supposed to do - it made you feel! Thanks and congratulations to Bonnie - Just Like That!

I first talked to my donor's Mom on Christmas day 2014, I had just received an email with contact information, and even though the protocol is for the donor family to reach out first, I couldn't think of a better day to thank this woman for my life and let her know that her daughter Rachel Lucy Givens breathes for me... Your song was a beautiful gut punch right in the feels!!! I called Rachel's Mom, Laura, and we are spending Valentine's day together... I can't wait to share this song together too... Rachel still breathes even though her body has been gone for 9+ years... I live for us both ♥️💙💚 Thank you Bonnie!

My daughter’s friend just received a major and difficult transplant of her entire digestive system. She waited months and almost gave up hope. A week ago, she received the call that a young donor had passed and was a match. My heart was full for my daughter’s friend, yet broke as a parent that the donor’s family’s hearts were breaking for their loss. Life is a gift. Just like that your life can change. No truer words have been written. Bonnie Raitt deserved her award for song of the year. ❤️

I, too, am one of those touched by your song to my very core. My daughter, her two children and three pups were involved in a horrific car accident. My 13 year old granddaughter and pups died instantly, my daughter held on for a week but succumbed to her injuries. My six year old grandson was left a paraplegic. My daughter wanted her organs donated but unfortunately for reasons, none of her organs could be donated. I can only imagine what it would have been like to know someone received her heart and hear the sound of her heart once more. Thank you for writing this beautiful song.
