As a side note, "Holding Out For A Hero" was used as the theme song for a 1984 TV show, called "CoverUp". The show starred Jennifer O'Neill and Jon-Erik Hexum. O'Neill playing professional photographer and undercover CIA agent, while Hexum played her model. While filming a scene, the director called for a cut and decided to play it out another way. While filming delayed, everyone was getting bored. Hexum was still carrying a S&W .44 magnum revolver that he had loaded blanks into, during the scene. Hexum pulled the revolver from it's shoulder holster and unloaded the cylinder. He, then, loaded a single blank into the cylinder, spun it, and shut the cylinder. He began to play, what he thought was a safe game of Russian Roultte. Hexum put the barrel too his right temple and pulled the trigger. Movie blanks are designed to make a bright, violent flash, so they can be captured on film. They're loaded with a fixture of gun powder and flash powder, sealed in with a plug made of paper, that was soaked on wax. When the .44 magnum blank fired, the wax plug did not penetrate Mr. Hexum's skull............but it did hit hard enough to cause a spalling effect, on the inside of his skull. A piece of skull, the size of a quarter was shattered and the fragments were propelled into his brain, causing massive bleeding. Six days later, he was declared brain dead. With his mother's permission, his body was flown to the California Pacific Medical Center, in San Francisco, where his organs were harvested.

Voyagers! Was my favorite show when it came out in 82. I was 7yrs old. My mother was murdered 1yr earlier in 81 and that show really helped me cope. Jeffrey losing his parents and being raised by his Aunt before he began his time travel adventures. I felt like I wasn't alone in the tragedy I was living in and I connected with that kid on many levels. It was sad it only lasted one season and when I heard Jon Erik Hexum died a year later, I was so sad for him. That show got me through some tough times, even if it was only for one year.

The time period portrayed in the video is the 1880s the days of the wild West. TV shows of the 1950s always portrayed the bad guy as dressed in black and the good guy dressed in white. That's why in this video the hero is a white guy dressed in white, riding a white horse, and wearing a mask. Kind of like that old old TV show of the 1950s called the lone ranger. No one knows for certain if there ever was a lone ranger. If there was, the most likely person was a black guy named Sam Bass who was a Texas ranger and worked with an Indian scout. Not much is known about Mr Bass, but his historical record matches the legend of the lone ranger closer than any other Texas ranger from that time period who was researched.

One of my favorite uses of this song was in Short Circuit 2. Near the end, Johnny 5 is badly damaged, on the verge of death, basically bleeding out, and spitting sparks from all over from bad guy's nearly destroying him. He finds out his human friends weren't harmed, just shoved in a freezer, and it really made him mad! He slaps on a bunch of stuff to gear himself up for war, including a makeshift robotic eyepatch, a metal mohawk, and spikes. He starts chasing the leader of the thugs that hurt him, and Bonnie kicks in as he rolls (he uses caterpillar treads to get around) after the guy. The whole time you can really feel the anger in his voice, subdued, but he is *pissed!* So the whole way, he's leaking battery acid, he's got a damaged tread, his body's covered in spare parts and makeshift, patchwork repairs, with a timer counting down to when his memory will be erased, effectively killing his personality, and he's burning what power he has left to stop a criminal from escaping the police. All of that set to this song. To call it epic and heart wrenching is the least that must be said about it.

Much to be said of this song, so many aspects that create the overall experience. First the driving drum beat with guitar and keyboard the back up singers laying the foundation. Followed by the instrumentation (and I saw in a comment below of Jim Steinman doing the instrumentation which would explain the emotion in the music: example Meatloaf.) Follow all of this with the lyrics that are thought provoking and pointed. "Where have all the good men gone and where are all the gods, wheres the streetwise Hercules to fight the rising odds" and all of this in this in the first minute and a half. All delivered with the quintessential 80's rock voice of Bonnie Tyler and you have a musical masterpiece.

Though I've never been a particular fan of Bonnie Tyler (don't have anything against her; she's just not one of my favorites), this particular song of hers is a classic! I ADORE it! 'Cause I think it speaks to the heart of every woman. Everything on the list, in the chorus, is what we all want. A man who hasn't been whipped into submission, but knows how to carry ANY situation. And above all, one that will love us enough to protect us; put himself in front of danger before it can get to us. WONDERFUL stuff! Thanks, again, girl! You're a treasure! God bless.

I am SO loving your reaction to this very typical 80's video!

Bonnie filmed the outdoor video at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. And a remake of this song is in the anime Shrek II.

She comes from Wales, the same country as the legendary Tom Jones. They sure can sing in that part of the world!

Another Welsh singer! You’re certainly gravitating towards the Welsh voice!

India it was cool to see you really get into this song. Released from the "Footloose" soundtrack and Columbia Record's had no clue how big this song was and failed to promote it. When she's in that white gown it's from the David Copperfield special where she performed it. The song managed to reach #34 with just Bonnie Tyler promoting it and not Columbia Record's.
