It's amazing to watch the progression of how Miss Bonnie plays this song throughout her career. From the Blues-infused versions of her younger days, to these slower, more soulful versions. I love them all. XO

Ms Bonnie is today the absolute best female singer/ slide guitar player of her generation. Her phrasing, feel and timing are perfect. She came up with the best blues players of our times and is a heavy weight with the best of male blues artists. Bonnie Raitt a national treasure sure will be hard to replace her.

She is the Angel from Montgomery. Saw Bonnie years ago at the Wisconsin Stock Pavilion with a sawdust floor. One knew she was a star just listening to her beautiful voice.

I saw her in Madison too. Back in the very early 70's at a retooled chapel which then became a funeral home and eventually a club called the Church Key. It later became Headliners. It was her first time in Madison. She was touring for her Give It Up album. One of the many shows I saw there was also Emmylou Harris about the time that Gram Parsons died. She still had jet black hair. Somehow, I missed the 'Cow Palace' performance, though I saw several other great shows there. A young guy I work with listens to a lot of nu-metal but I heard him playing Bonnie the other day. I laughed and asked him what he was listening to. He said he heard the song in a movie & liked it. Kids today...

Bonnie Raitt Thank you so much for what you wrote! I've been your fan since the first time I heard (from) you (in the early 70s) and have always wondered why you haven't become more famous with your outstanding voice and your marvelous guitar playing! All my very best, Ila from Germany

@Bonnie Raitt: it's amazing that this should be the beginning of a personal exchange between the "world-famous" B.R. and me (by no means "famous"; just known to a couple of folks in my own country and around). Well, on the Internet you never can tell what's real or just fake. I'll just have a try and maybe find out. We're roughly the same age and, I guess, both aware of things that have turned up over the last couple of decades that have made an impact on our lives (Cuba, Tchechoslovakia, Vietnam, decolonization in Africa, The "Blocs"...) and are maybe demanding engagement. Music-wise I must admit I'm rather passive than active, but I do like singing in a private circle, and I like to listen. As you are so far ahead of me in that respect (and business) I wouldn't know what kind of advise I could give you, and also I'm not sure what you mean by "hard time" going through. Health? All the trouble with Covid? Personal losses? So, if you are real and really in the mood, I'd be glad about a reply. So far for the moment. Take care care of yourself and all my best wishes for you! Ila

They’re not her lyrics. The song was composed by John Prine who died just last April of COVID-19.

...wow...just - wow...I don't know how John Prine wrote this song, but it's incredible to imagine countless songwriters writing songs for paternal or maternal reasons...but to cross that boundary, and write from "the other side"...and I've heard so many versions of this...but this - THIS...this voice, this inflection, this feeling...this is the reason I have, long, absolutely ADORED Bonnie Raitt...

Fact. This is a perfect song. Songs have five essential parts in western pop music. Melody, Lyrics, Rhythm, Arrangement, Vocals. "Angel" just CRUSHES the lyrics, arrangement, and Bonnie tears the top off. The melody and rhythm are more than adequate to convey the the enervating heat and near-hopeless lassitude. Simply immortal, both of them, for this melding of sounds. You may have heard of those people who hear sound on a deeper level than most folks, and some musical passages can induce great emotion, to the point of "braingasm"? The first time I played"Streetlights", "Angel" felt like a person I really liked but didn't know had just opened my heart and moved in. I didn't cry on the first listening. But I want to say that I believe that certain vibrations - sounds - are the same as "perfect" numbers in math. They are perfect notes. I haven't figured out whether they are perfect anywhere, anytime, or just in the place we find them. Wut? Ex: Play Eric Clapton's "Let It Rain", the break/solo contains several, and a couple in series, IIRC. But Bonnie's voice can make them ALL sound like perfect notes, if she needs them to. Just such remarkable pitch control and tone - like Stradivari himself had built and treated her voice. My era in Harvard Square, Cambridge missed overlapping Bonnie's by a couple of years, and that's probably a good thing. I had just divorced a redhead, but, damn, Sam, did you hear her SING?
