I made this video for Neli Stoyanova a bonsai teacher in Facebook for FREE., She requested this maybe to make it easier for students to grasp the concept. I am a great admirer of Neli for what she is doing. So for you wanting to learn bonsai with no teachers around...here is your opportunity to learn for free. check her facebook "Neli Stoyanova" Bonsai school.

Nichole Macasero haven't tried that, only from ficus and tamarind, but I guess that will still work with camonsil and starapple however skill is needed to split the bark and the cambium. the cambium should go with the bark when splitting.

Well done my brother. You do a great job with your videos. This is my comment: 1 slits will turn into roots. So you made them a bit too wide. They need to be a bit narrower. 2 you dont need to ring bark first. Just cut the lower par and lift the bark. 3 root will come from the bottom part of the lifted part and not above where you pointed. actually some roots will come from the side of the slits. The bark strips will turn into roots eventually. So if it is too wide/fat roots from it will be wide also. You want the bark to turn into roots and fatten after that so as the roots fatten the scars heal. 4 This is a survival mechanism fr the tree. Removing the bark, cambium, and phloem prevents carbohydrates and photosynthates from flowing down the trunk. It still allows water and mineral nutrients to flow upward to the leaves via the channels in the xylem, thus keeping the leafy portions of the tree from drying out and maintaining them with an adequate supply of nutrients. Removing the cambium layer prevents the regeneration of phloem and healing over of the wound, the carbohydrates and photosynthates flow down the trunk and collect at the girdling site. The presence of this excess of carbohydrates and photosynthates at the girdling site, plus the presence of the water in the sphagnum moss, causes dormant adventitious buds in the area to grow into roots. well done Bro!
@BonsaiIligan

Neli S This is my confusion a bit on this technique Neli Dear. item no 4. If I dont ring bark down the trunk and scrape a little just like in ordinary air layering, the cambium would still be intact in the wood and not in the bark thus may still allow the energy to flow towards the roots instead of collecting at the girdling. It would be easier for the Tree to just grow another set of barks to heal and replace the lifted bark rather than grow roots. But anyway I have to see the results and think theoretically later hehe. thanks Neli for teaching this technique, If successful I will have Tamarinds with beautiful Nebari as young as 2 to 3 year old.

Bonsai Iligan Darling did you not lift the bark together with the cambium??? If you did not your bark will die. You have left behind the food transportation system.
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 9 жыл бұрын
I think it is not possible to lift the bark together with the cambium. The cambium is always together with the wood rather than the bark. If you have to lift the cambium then you have to use chisels and lift part of the wood. Then you almost instantly kill the plant as you will have cut also the supply going up the tree. The project would be just the same with a large truncheon cutting. The cambium is just a thin layer in between the wood and bark. That is why we scrape a little when we do ordinary air layering to somehow damage the Xylem (the outer vascular system).
@nelis3330
@nelis3330 9 жыл бұрын
Bonsai Iligan but darling dont you remove the cambium when airlayering??? You have to remove it. And you have removed it when you ring barked the tree. You must remove it completely when ring barking or your tree will bridge. It is exactly the same principle as airlayering. I shall explain for you on BS, Dont know how to post pictures here.
@nelis3330
@nelis3330 9 жыл бұрын
Neli S Remember cambium is betwenn xilem and floem, and floem is near the bark>>>the leaving part of the bark. So maybe you have lifted it together with the bark???? When layering I ring bark all the soft part of he wood up to the sap wood. The cambium is in between the phloem and xylem, and is responsible for producing both. As the cambium cells divide, interior cells differentiate into the xylem and exterior cells produce the phloem. Although the cambium is only a few cells wide, it is extremely important not only for xylem and phloem production, but it is also responsible for secondary stem and root production. Roots that you need to create a successful air layer. read here: www.thebonsaicast.com/air-layering-101-part-1/ www.thebonsaicast.com/air-layering-101-part-2/

calvin godinho You have to bury them back to the ground submerging up to the level of your split bark. All the split bark should be buried, so that you can grow roots plenty enough so you can cut the original roots which are naturally coiling where you can't make a Nebari.

Hello Sir~~~~So I did learn something. I have a bougainvillea that is out of control so I tried to follow you and I did successfully created Nebari~~~~I was so happy when I opened the package of moss~~ plastic ~~wrap~~ and aluminum foil and there be roots!!! growing out of the package~~~~My one questions is how long should I allow the roots to grow? It has been in this state about 2 months now~~~so how large should the root ball to grow before I do the chop and pot the new Nebari and place it up in its training pot??
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 8 жыл бұрын
+Carol Dempsey it will be under your intuition you judge whether the amount of root is large enough to support your top growth. If in case you wean the top too early. Here ares some guidelines. Put back to shade. Cut back some branches. These should decrease loss of moisture through transpiration to the extent that the new roots can cope with the demand at the top. Once new shoots start growing you can ease it back to sun. So start by putting the plant under shade after weaning.
@TheJoy2yah

+Bonsai Iligan ~~So I did learn something and I would like to give an update on the Bougainvillea~~It is doing very well and is now in the full sun with new leaves coming out all over the top of the branch termination and a few are coming out on the first and second branch~~~I tried the split trunch method on a few branches from the removal of the Nibari from the mother tree. I held the splits open with wood sticks and now they are beginning to put nodes and small leaves~~~so from the one Nebari (science experiment ) I have about 8 new bonsais from about 4 inches up to about 10 inches~~~I am looking forward to increase in growth by Spring 2016...I plan to keep them in training pots until I have the style I want~~I now have the opportunity to try various styles from my collections~~~I also want to thank you for your Very Helpful videos.

I just have some questions, why do you want to do that (cutting of the bark) and what is air layering. what is the point? thanks
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 8 жыл бұрын
+Dan Serevi . Air layering is a kind of propagation technique where you get a new tree from a branch or even from a trunk. New roots can grow in the area right above where you girded your tree trunk or branch and you can then separate your tree from the mother tree. This is the principle I am using to separate the tree from the old trunk base and root system. This one is better called "ground layering" but same principle with air layering. I want to have a root system which will develop into a wide Nebari (root flare).

Hi I did the same around 8 year ago to a pine, only difference I left one strip of bark still connected it worked perfect for me. I think with all bark removed I think it will die
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 8 жыл бұрын
+deptuty dog In theory if you leave one strip still connected, the energy produce from the top foliage can still travel towards the roots thus preventing root formation from the debarked area. But again if the strip is thin enough then not all the energy going down can be accommodated through that highway thus roots can still form at the cambium right above the debark area. Supposedly the tree will not die because the part of the cambium bringing the nutrients from the roots to the foliage is still intact even if you have girded that tree as long as you have leave the cambium intact.

is it possible to air layer continuously, creating a root system inside a root system?
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 7 жыл бұрын
no. the principle of air layering is that you cut off energy supply going to you roots forcing you tree to grow roots where you debark them. if you do continuously you will eventually deprive you existing roots energy to the point of death. let the new roots develop well to vigor then maybe you can experiment further.

@BonsaiIligan 8 жыл бұрын
+Cute Gau Nebari is a Japanese bonsai term. It means the root flare at the bottom most part of your trunk which connect to the roots. Nebari can add to the aged look of your tree. What we do is to first enlarge the roots by planting your tree in a large pot or Co lander, then when transferring to the bonsai pot, plant the tree a little bit up exposing the flare of the roots.
