The split trunk Tamarind is being re-potted in this video to a not so shallow bonsai pot. This is anticipated to facilitate root management on future works as well as allow the roots to enlarge.

Where do you get your tree sources? Do you usually get them from the fields , from seeds, grafts or branches that have rooted? Do you happen to make your pots too? I am grateful for your recommendations on using homemade bonsai soil; using materials that are affordable - from tree Elmer's glue sealants; regular wires vs copper wires; inexpensive, practical, regular tools etc... I respect and value your resourcefulness, thriftiness, practical and unselfish attributes. I just learned yesterday of your passing. Maraming salamat po sa lahat ng itinuro ninyo. I do hope that if I get a reply from one of your children or even co- bonsai aficionados- I remain, respectfully yours. THANK YOU.

I've noticed that when you repot trees, the soil you REMOVE always tends to be ordinary looking, rich, black soil. However the "soil" you place in the new pots sometimes appears more like an odd beige gravel with various chips mixed in. What purpose do the different "soils" serve? I've began work on a spruce and a willow and I would like to know how they can be applied.
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 8 жыл бұрын
I usually start with what you call gravel. Actually they are river sand I sieve to two sizes the coarser one I make as drainage layer placed at the bottom while the finer one I place as middle and top. This medium becomes hot when the temperature/climate is hot and may be detrimental to the plant, what I do is that I mulch the top with ordinary soil usually but sometimes with other materials like coco peat or compost to protect from overheating. Then in the long run the soil in the pot becomes ordinary soil but the bottom still stays gravel, this is what is important that you don't lose your drainage capacity.

sir how make lower portion the base thick of a bonsai
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 8 жыл бұрын
By using sacrifice branches growing on the lower portion. Allow it to grow big like another tree growing on your trunk base. You need to watch that sacrifice cause it can dominate your tree and weaken it. In that case you need to control (slow down) it's growth by clipping. If you can't get a growth in the lower trunk try defoliating your tree so that sunlight can get on it and encourage growth there otherwise you need to graft a branch down there.

I loved watching you work and showing us this technique. Could this be applied to an indigenous fig tree
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 7 жыл бұрын
To thicken the lower part of your tree, you need to grow branches there and let it grow big as if you are growing another tree. you need to watch your original tree though cause the sacrifice branch might dominate your tree and weakens it. if this happens slow down a bit the sacrifice branch by pruning. if you cannot get a branch growing at the lower base you can graft a branch.
