Morten I identify with your processes because we have similar climates. I am in London Canada where today we got 6 inches of snow in early November. Fortunately my trees are all tucked away for the winter. Your Garden tour was wonderful, thank you for sharing.

Hi Trevor, not to be argumentative but Amur maples are native to the Amur river valley between Northern China and Siberia. They may have naturalized in your area but they are not native to North America.

Lovely tour of the garden Morten which I am rewatching again. I agree with you about the large turtle back type roots on Japanese maples - I find it a bit ugly and unnatural looking. Maples should be graceful, elegant and delicate.

at 5:30 is something really interesting about removing the flowers on cherry bonsais. I have a japanese cherry flower tree where I have huge problems to produce ramification. Does anyone have a guide or more explanation about this subject?

Best time to cut back Acer campestre and other deciduous trees, are in late spring. After the first set of leaves have hardened up. Then you get the best new growth after cutting.

could a tree still be classified as shohin if it was over the usual height of a shohin but it was the same proportions as a typical shohin (same compactness, pad size etc.) for example a literati tree?

Tascam audio recorder, lapel mic, and a clap board. Let the mic run the whole time. Clap in and out of the video. Line the claps up from both audio sources to synchronize during edit. Clapping out tells you what audio you can skip, without needing to search too much, if you turn the camera off. The best video editing software for on the go, in my opinion, is final cut pro. I think it's a cloud based subscription service now, not sure about cost. But, it is drag and drop. Easy enough to use. Good luck!

An͋gȅlos͍ If the tree is healthy and it is done at the right time it should go well. All depends on the health of the tree and if it is done when it grows well (Kate spring to early summer).

I wonder how you Winter over your trees? Do the surrounding woods stop wild winds and allow snow to fall gently?

Mj Seifried Depends on the winter. For the first time I let most trees stay out the full winter period. Because we had almost no freezing at all. And the large trees helps protecting too. In normal winters I store the small and medium sized trees in a cold greenhouse or similar. Keeping trees from freezing the rootball. Large bonsai are placed on the ground under the benches.

Shohin are stored i a cool winter storage (greenhouse or a like) Just to keep them from freezing the soil for longer periods). And to protect tender trees like Trident maples.

Travis you want to time it with the grand period of growth... if your tree is able to flower, remove the flowers and it is after that that the tree will put on its main flush of growth (in contrast with he SMALL flush in the early spring). Hope this helps.

i agree the japanese trees sometimes look too artificial.. i also dont agree with all the japanese bonsai "rules" india taiwan korean china penjing all do things differently all still beautiful.. even if they dont follow the "rules" i never liked rules haha. thanks for sharing. liked and subbed
