Eric demonstrates how to start a bonsai raft using Kishu Juniper. This tree's journey to raft style began one year ago, when Eric removed an upright juniper from a regular 3" container and placed it in a box on its side, wired the trunk to meander horizontally along the box with some undulation to produce movement.
03 The great thing about junipers is that if you bury the trunk they will issue new roots without any coaxing. Eric explains the importance of the whips to the ongoing growth of the raft.
50 Eric removes wires and does a little maintenance of the box without really working on the plant.
24 Surprise! Some portions of the tree DO need thinning and wiring!
31 Eric discusses the challenge of wiring rafts, and why all twists need to be clockwise or counter-clockwise, not a mix of the two.
