Psycho-Pass is one of those anime everyone remembers. Despite the original Psycho Pass coming out a decade ago, Akane Tsunemori's journey from green newbie on the force to head detective might hit home more now than ever before.

Psycho-Pass isn't just the story of a dystopian futuristic Japan, it's an anime that hits home at some of the biggest issues with overbearing government, free will, freedom, and mental health. When a society is ruled by a singular system that's inner workings and decisions are completely unquestioned, it leaves room for corruption and unfairness, especially if the system isn't unbiased, which no system ever is. Today we're going down the rabbit hole to talk not just about Psycho-Pass, but the real world implications of a world like that, how it felt to watch it, and the emotionally journey it took me on.
About Bonsai Pop:

Welcome to Bonsai Pop 2022, it's our 3rd year as a channel and we're trying to combine what we've accomplished in our debut year and our Junior year by making longer and more in-depth content, but AS often as we were releasing it when we started. That takes editors and editors must be paid my friends. we want to stay as independent from sponsorship as possible for you, which means we need your help on patreon to fund these videos coming out more often. We're $1,500 away from our goal still, so as of right now we can do about 3 videos a month if we're lucky. As you can see Dani from Lines in Motion was hired to help with this video and did an amazing job! meanwhile i've been setting up to stream more professionally on Twitch in order to help make the extra money for editors. it also helps me spend more time with you guys! so if patreon isn't your deal yet, check us out on Twitch: /Bonsai_pop Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed, and we'll be back really soon. Next video is going to be wacky so stay excited! -Mike

I dunno, Makishima's wanting a Psycho-Pass makes perfect sense to me, even humanizes him some. Monstrous as the Sibyl System is, it's lonely and awful being in a position where you feel no one can relate to you really. He gets hard proof on a constant basis that there is no one like him and no one understands him. That's exhausting.

Well, he has a zero psycho-pass because he is a sociopath. It's honestly, a huge hole in the plot, because obviously there are sociopaths and psychopaths, and this system can't account for them. We are to assume he is the FIRST and ONLY sociopath? The system doesn't even understand a person like this can exist, and he's documented as a zero. In reality, sociopaths and psychopaths, are easily discerned. We don't need magic super guns to pinpoint them. Also, this is addressed in an episode very weirdly, where the sociopath triggers a psycho-pass of like 400. According to how all this works, she wouldn't have triggered anything. She's a sociopath and has zero emotion. She wouldn't trigger anything, let alone tilt the charts.

@@czerro1 have you seen the show even? Sorry but you statements make it seem like you have not as the system can’t recognize his brain as you learn he is the system… it is made up of Brian of the zero psycho pass the people who don’t show results. @@czerro1 no makishima is a psychopath and that’s why his psycho pass is at 0. the Sybil system even said in an episode that each member was just like him while they were individuals. So the Sybil system is made up of psychopaths. He also wasn’t the only one in the show, Touma was also one. Rikako who had a Psycho pass of 400 was a sociopath, same with senguji. The reason for that is the brain structure. In a p-p Audio Drama choe gu-sung and makishima talked about how a person’s psycho pass is measured. They figured it’s measured through the limbic system, basically the amygdala and the frontal lobe (psychopaths have these underdeveloped) sociopath's on the other hand have normal brains but are a product of their environment so it only makes sense their crime coefficient is so high.
@danielfredel4193

@czerro1 This is a spoiler for the end of season one. The system operates on brains like his sitting in vats judging people. The reason it can't judge Shogo Makashima is because then the system would be forced to judge itself. So, in that sense, the system is fully aware of people like Shogo because the system is comprised of people like him. So honestly, I don't really see it as a plot hole. The government is run by a system that has its own interests and is out to protect them.

16:14 Funny thing about feelings, they actually play an important role in decision making. Long story short: studies have shown that the lack of emotions make it difficult to evaluate how important something is. (I.E. you won't be able to tell the difference between doing something right or wrong because you don't feel guilt or worry.) I guess that's what Shogo Makishima represents with his 0% Psycho Pass. 😜

I grew up in an abusive family. I got no breaks, but I was smart, so I did well in school and hobbies. The trauma caught up to me in my teen years, and I was put through a lot of unnecessary psych treatments. Psych drugs are great if they work but... They took years off my life. I am angry and resentful. These qualities helped me get back up, defend my rights, put myself through Uni. It should not be like that. I miss the curious, gentle child I used to be. But I had to stand up to myself to finally get the right diagnoses and help: autism, ADHD, and complex PTSD. Learning to love myself has been a very bumpy road but I have such good friends to help me on this road. I love them so much and with their help I'll be OK. I want to give back as much as I can, too.

Psycho-Pass is special in so many ways that I'm glad you made this video. Been a huge fan of your work in the last 2 years and some of your newer videos are from animes that defined my taste in the last decade, so I didn´t hold myself this time and I'm going to thank you for all the work you been doing in this pandemic. About this masterpiece -specially the first season -, it's crazy how it handles really core questions about the connection between sociological and psychological conditionings - deviance, health/illness, social cohesion, bureaucracy, algorithms, digital identities, social order, rankings, etc - in some kind of dystopic sci-fi crime thriller supporting different perspectives and debates about their world. Besides that, each character have a defined philosophy and reinforce it with actual references to western philosophical and scientific works the charachters 'like' - the very first scene in the anime are some quotes of Pascal and Ortega y Gasset; later in the season they even mentioned Bentham and Max Weber or in the movies with DuBois and it's the first time i ever heard those names in anime -, showing that divulgation of really interesting ideas could be fun and entertaining in any kind of media if the story is well written. It shows a huge respect for it's audience with a captivating nail bitting story, memorable characters - the philosophy of law's debate between Makishima, Kougami and Akane in the last episodes of first season made them my favorites - and top notch animation at the release moment. The only piece of work i could think inside and outside anime that has this level of 'intelectual' respect for their audience without the fear of feeling too complicated it's the first season of Westworld and I really hope creatives and studios can expand this niche to a more broader audience because it's fun AF and more people deserve this kind of incentives to be curious about this kind of stuff.

One of THE best sci-fi pieces of media in any medium, whether it be literature, television, movies, etc. The first season in particular is nothing short of a masterpiece. Hell, the story even concludes differently than we'd expect from knowledge of tropes. While I can't agree politically with Akane's conclusion (or this early comment about the world of Psycho-Pass being in any way representative of any actual Leftist Ideology but we all good ily (respectfully)), narratively it's just brilliant. Bittersweet in the best kind of way. There are so few pieces of cyberpunk-ish anime that come to mind as on par with this series (esp S1), maybe Lain, Technolyze, I guess Akira, maybe a small handful of others that can even compare. Anyways, I'm tryna get another job to increase my income a bit, so hopefully you'll have at least a few bucks a month from me soon! I don't think I could be a detective, though. 1312 and all that. It isn't only political, but religious, too. Considering Christians look at book of Revelation and see things like "whoever did not worship the beast or it's image were put to death", they consider that to be the case with the NWO where only one way is tolerated and the rest are killed off. Psycho Pass kind of reminds me of that because you have to live according to "their" way or be killed, basically. Just throwing that idea out there, it's not always a political messaging, but can be religious, too (though the creators of the anime probably had politics in mind, to be fair lol).

Its been years since I watched Psycho Pass, so I may not remember everything. You ask an interesting question though so I'll give you my best answer. I don't remember the show stating any hard rules about the sybil system interprets mental states. But we do see it regestering kill level crime coefficients on people who outwardly appear very calm kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKKvl415bN6Lh9k . Sybil has millions of people to study, so I think there is a one in a billion chance that it wouldn't recognize any kind of dissociative state. I'm pretty sure sybil would flag a dissociative state as a higher crime coefficients because having less empathy toward people makes it easier to harm them. But then there is Makishima. He is that one in a billion chance. Sybil just doesn't have any idea how his mind is wired, so he is easily able to dissociate and trick sybil, and thus get away with whatever he wants. He proves that sybil can be fooled, its just not very likely. The fact that sybil can in fact be fooled is pretty central to the plot.

I think Psycho-Pass has some pretty cool thought provoking themes behind it. The first season is written by Gen Urobochi that did Fate/Zero, and his mind is probably a work of art too based on his quotes. The character I like the most is Akane, and how she is portrayed in the anime. She small or petite but still tries to overcome that limitation with training and critical thinking to do her job.

you know there seem to be some similarities between the sibyl system and the Japanese current social system. I would even say that the sibyl system is an ideal version of the Japanese social system. then both try to maintain a stress-free society by eliminating any abnormal elements.

I think a lot of context, like crime investigation, the conviction rate, the realities of incarceration, and lack of mental health recognition/resources _in Japan_ was missing from the interpretation of how Psycho Pass and the Sybil System relates to real world politics.

Psycho-Pass Season 1 is pretty good show with several compelling characters, interesting plot, and gives you ideas to think about. I enjoy the movie for what it was. Season 2, in my opinion, is a mixed bag of good and bad parts that kind of felt liked a retread of Season 1. Season 3 is honestly a weird continuation of the series and I do not know how the story will move forward.

Season 3 has some good themes. The two political philosophies campaigning for how to keep the populace eternally happy it boils down to a whole bodies pursuit toward feminine internal growth and feeling alongside a masculine strive toward power and physical growth as goals. Exploring what aspects that we strive for defining how we stay stable through our desires and race toward them. However those things aren't as simple to do as they look on the outside.

It's too late for me to be surfing KZbin channels, but if I hadn't I wouldn't be writing this comment on this video I'm about to watch. Because any time a video pops up on my home page that says both "Bonsai Pop" and "New", I know at least the next half hour is spoken for. That, and I love Psycho-Pass.

15:45 THIS. This is so true. Fascism is without a doubt, a bad thing. But then so is anarcho-communism, ultralibertarianism, or hyper-capitalism. People seem to critisise fascism a lot, but it feels like those people wouldn't critisise communism as well. Nobody wants to live under an oppressive system that fucks over ethnic minorities and propagates racist nationalism and authoritarianism Nobody wants to live under a system where you can't own your own land or private property, under a regime that, as history has proven, is just as worse as fascism Nobody wants to live under a system where people are given too much freedom, breeding recklessness and little regard for law and order that's there for everyone's safety Nobody wants to live under a system where the rich get richer and the poor get even poorer The reality is that extremism from all four corners of the spectrum is harmful to society. While we all have diverse political views, we should still be careful to not devolve into over-radical extremes that can be dangerous and harmful.

in 2020 i had a really awful job, awful bosses, forcing to go to the office during the heights of the pandemic because they thought i was not working from my home when i they were the ones not paying attention to my work, i felt like a looser with small payment fighting at workplace with them in a toxic enviromenmt, not being able to find something better, went down to a dark place to keep it on this video lets say i had a cludy psycho path, strated resorting to self harm, but it was coming out of that experience powering through and being able to stop myself from doing something worse and finding a better place for me that led to a huge personal growth and new found love for life and myself, sometimes we go through this just to come out stronger but other times it can break us, the important thing is to power through and not fall into a worse place, find the help you need find the love you need cut the toxicity and love yourself

I’m so happy to see you cover Psycho-Pass, it’s one of my absolute favourite shows! Season 1 a masterpiece and the rest of the franchise, while still great, never quite reaches that quality again, but I’d say the rest of the show is absolutely worth taking a look at! Season 2 is definitely the week point and I understand why a lot of people bow out. However, The Movie, Sinners of the System, and especially Season 3/First Inspector are really great. Obviously, you cover what you want to cover, but you should consider doing the rest of the show if you ever feel up to it!
