The scene in Bloodlust where he goes to buy the horse and it's revealed that the guy who sold it to him was one of the children he saved many years prior made me think. When your life is eternal, the long arc of history becomes your life experience. Maybe the reason he continues to do good is that he is able to see his actions bear fruit and witness what a better place the world becomes as a result of his actions. We say that a great society is marked by people who plant trees who's shade they'll never know, but D not only witnesses the tree, but see's it's death and see's the forrest that grows from it's having lived.

VHD is without a doubt one of the coolest fictional settings. It wraps up dark fantasy, eldritch horror, spaghetti western, and pulp sci fi in such a brilliant way. It's a combination that doesn't sound like it should work, but it comes together perfectly. I sincerely hope the animated series in preproduction comes to fruition and finally brings the series back to the mainstream.

The term "Dunpeal" is more technically correct - someone with a spectral lineage - such as a vampire father or ghost of a dead man. They were called that and considered that if they were born with their embryonic sac covering them - meaning born dead with their burial shroud. So a half vampire would automatically be "Dunpeal" and be very scary/ominous instead of sounding silly where Vampyrr or Dhampire modern made up words might sound better to a modern audience. But a legit 1500s->1900s person - they'd shudder at "he was a Dunpeal" - and go "What new gibberish?" for the Vamphyr/Dhampire stuff.

i think that the sorrow itself isn't necessary a bad thing, as long that sorrow serves a purpose, i can't talk about D because i just knew about the existence of the series, but by putting myself in that place, i know that even if i will never have a place in that world and i will be alone for eternity, i could always be there to try to make the world a interesting but good place for everyone, being the person that i needed when i was younger for example... the thing with being eternal isn't being alone, its the partings that hurts the most, since everyone would eventually die, but at least, their memories will forever live on in my mind ¨Though life is merely a journey to the grave, it must not be undertaken without hope. Only then will a traveler's story live on, treasured by those who bid him farewell¨ - Persona 3 Game Over Screen this is going to be useful since i was going to play a sort of inmortal on a D&D campaign.

I read the Chinese translation of the series, which imo might be closer to the the originals in Japanese. In the series, there are several places imply that D might be the son of the "first noble" (don't know how it's translated in English) , the only true emperor in Noble's hierarchy - Dracula. Even in the first novel, Lee's daughter also asked D, "Is your name D... from the D in Dracula?". It makes sense imo because this does explain why he has the highest clearance in Noble's systems, and in the Bloodlust, the sense Carmila got stabbed, there is a comparison between D's red eyes, which implies his Vampire's blood, and the red eyes decorations on the guard of the emperor's sword.

The license was picked up by Digital Frontier a few years ago, with Kawajiri signing on as supervisor for a new international animated series aimed at streaming platforms, though the goal is to do hour long episodes with painterly CGI that emulates the look of Amano's art. Preproduction is halted due to quarantine apparently. They also did a successful kickstarter for a comic book miniseries based on one of Kikuchi's short stories, and a Pathfinder RPG sourcebook. The sourcebook and the first issue (with gorgeous art) were released, but the remaining issues were delayed due to the artist having to back out to deal with a family medical emergency. D always plagued by setbacks. :/

Recently I had the urge to get back into Vampire Hunter D, I don't often like reading books, but I would definitely read the novels if I had proper access to them. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is great and even if it is different from the Manga and Novel, I like enjoying the brothers rather than resenting them, but I still respect the original sources. Its sad that more people don't know about D, because he is so great! Not only is he gorgeous and basically undefeatable, he's kind hearted and shows it. My favorite scene in all of Bloodlust (And my mom's as of recently when I watched it with her) is when the old man defends D. Tell the story of the children and how the Hunter brought them all back home safe and sound only to be chased out without pay because of what he was, and then the man revealing that he was one of those kids and D was that hunter. It really tugs at your heart strings and shows how sad D's life is, if he wanted to, he could of slaughtered the townsfolk for being so ungrateful, but he didn't. He left without anything, and didn't argue, and whether you read one novel or read one manga or watch one movie, you instantly know just what kind of person D is. I hope in the future, he gets so much more recognition, because he deserves every bit of it. Legit my second favorite character of all time (1st place actually goes to Alucard from Hellsing just because I knew about him first-).

Same here. I remember when they would do their Anime Invasion from 10pm to 2am on Saturdays. Its how I saw Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D, and Guyver for the first time.

Thank you for making this. Bloodlust continues to be my single favorite film and I love people keeping the series alive. Amano's art brought to life by Kawajimi was just a perfect storm of awesomeness. Maybe a future video on its music? its just so damn perfect for that amazing film.

When I was kid, I fell in love with Vampire Hunter D movie when I watch it for the first time when it aired on The SCi FI channel (before it become the boring SYFI) back in the early 90s. I can also throw in Robot Carnival as well. Now fast forward today while I'm into my 30's now, I still love Vampire Hunter D and I even watched Bloodlust couple years back, while the movie may have one of the best animation works of that time, I wasn't a fan of the bloodlust storyline. Although, there are people out there who like the story of bloodline better than the original film, but for me, I prefer the original storyline over bloodlust. Does the original have it own problems in terms of story, of course it does such as the pacing and some parts of the film that may also felt "generic" or "cliche" at times, but it helps me to understand the plot of the film especially when it come to the lore of "D". Hellsing is another one of my favorite anime and I know that a lot of people may not like this but I would love to see a battle between Alucard and D. I don't know about you, but I'm betting my money on "D".

If you think about, no matter how D may look at it, he is always reminded that he is not like other people. The world itself seems to scream this in his face. His left hand, which you stated he seems to hate, must be the greatest reminder of his inhuman nature. He cannot control that hand, it has its own will and that must be either disgusting to D or frustrating.

I forgot which book but one reason why I Love his left hand parasite, D doesn't know how to do laundry and he use too much soap and smelt like roses and the hand keeps saying "it's me" when people ask "what's that flowery smell" LOOOOOOVE IT

Bloodlust is definitely my favourite anime movie. It was this movie that led me to this channel more than a year ago and it's fitting cos both bloodlust and bonsai pop make you feel special for having discovered it. The quality of both are just so far beyond their peers that you just feel fortunate for being able to enjoy it.

Never read the series, but thanks to the video it just jumped to the top of my to read list! To answer your question at the end I think the purpose of life is to create purpose for yourself. In an endless life like D has the world is still growing and changing so I think the key is to try and stay present instead of seeing the world as separate. A running motif of long living characters is that they become separate from the world, but that's also what hurts them. Being in and appreciating the present is the key to living a fulfilling life in my opinion.

Literally the first anime I saw back when I was 5 yrs old via a bootleg VHS that contained not only VHD but Nausicaa. 1986 was a magical year for me and have been a lifelong fan of this movie. Also I wanna point out that the bluray is astonishing, it looks like the movie was just painted the other day.

I want a new vampire hunter d movie. No cgi just old school hand drawn animation like blood 🩸 lust. There needs to be a crowd fund to bring this movie out in all its glory, I wonder why they are waiting so long to bring these treasures out. I wonder what is the cost of a hand drawn movie like this in our time. So many questions so little answers.
