Directed by a true master of the genre, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, and based off the beautiful Gothic prose of author Hideyuki Kikuchi, D returned to remind us just how badass a vampire hunter can be. In 1999, I had the utmost pleasure of attending a book signing, for Sandman: The Dream Hunters. I had brought along a few of the booklets for Final Fantasy and a VHS sleeve of Vampire Hunter D. I slipped them in between a few things to be signed, by Gaiman and Amano. When Amano saw the sleeve, he had gasped and said that D was his favorite character. To my surprise, he took some extra time to sketch out several images, a tiny one on my case and another, much larger one, inside his art book, that I had purchased there. I had completely forgotten to show him the Final Fantasy booklets.

Agreed: the director and key animator, Kawajiri, based a majority of his character designs and overall “proportions” of said characters on Ancient Greek artwork and sculptures, along with the essence of early 20th Century artists such as Egon Schiele. Also, hyper detailed line-work and multiple layered chromatic cel-shading helped really bring the butter-smooth animation to life in a timeless, yet unprecedentedly distinct way that I’ve always admired from the bottom of my artist’s heart. I’m glad that you appreciate it as much as I do: you have very good taste in feature-length animation, my friend!

Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust is my favorite Vampire film of ALL TIMES (ANY MEDIA), visually unrivaled, musically is the sound of heaven, and the story is simple and complex, exactly how I love it to be. I'm still smirking, when the scene in the coffin comes as Ds antagonist reads the invitation letter to the castle and he's addressed properly as "Graf Meierling" and I quietly read along in German even though I'm always watching the English Dub. Nice detail they added, that so much time has passed, that none of the humans seem to know his real name and instead he continously gets called Meier Link. ^^

It's honestly a crime that Vampire Hunter D hasn't received similar treatment to series' like Ghost in the Shell which have had multiple adaptations to provide different perspectives and starting points for those interested in getting into the series. I love the books, but I'll be the first to admit that they can be dense as hell and difficult to read. Keeping with the GitS comparison, I've heard similar things said about the original manga for that series (don't judge me for not having read it, it's on my list), but watching the movie and anime adaptations can help give a feel for the world and make the manga easier to process. While VHD has had two movies and a short lived manga (which I really loved and was sad to see cancelled), the story has such a rich and fantastic world that it could really benefit from the change in perspective adaptation can give, and I hope we get to see more someday.

I would highly suggest investigating the Trinity Blood novels (and to a slightly lesser extent, the anime), drawn by one of Amano's students (Thores) It's a fantastic blend of sci-fi, fantasy, and vampires!

Yeah the isekai trend is fun and all, but shows like Sword Art Online are narrative meta-ironic disasters. I miss the brutally authentic, arresting vision of things like the original Ghost in the Shell film, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, and Ninja Scroll. But I am a total sucker for feature films over tv shows. The work of Satoshi Kon, Red Line, Princess Mononoke will always be more powerful to me than all but the best long form anime/manga stories. Like Berserk, One Punch Man and Hunter x Hunter that go out of their way to imbue meaning and symbolism richly into the story, not just another villain of the weak and disposable shounen action like so many shows seem to be these days.

It's good that you compare Vampire Hunter D with Akira. It is only that D falls into the Horror Genre rather than the more mainstream Post Apocalyptic Genre that Akira has to account for it's smaller exposure. It is just as visually striking but it's more subtle, nuanced storyline gets overshadowed by other great works. Thank you for reminding us of this great work.

As someone who for a long time drove a truck for a living I was forever checking audible to see if there were audio books for this series. Sadly as far as I know there never has been as the books are actually fairly niche and not actually very well known outside of japan. I do enjoy re-reading them in my medical retirement nowadays though as they are a wonderfully thought out series of books and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for more D.

I remember my dad showing me this movie back in 2004 when I was 12 years old and I remember being so horrified and enchanted and wanting more. Even now as an adult, this movie that I've seen countless times is still so good every time I rewatch it with someone watching it for the first time. And like you said, it's interesting that it isn't given the same "love" that something like Akira is given despite both having been a huge cultural impact. I also hadn't realized that there were forty books of this; university starts back up soon and as a literature student, I have a huge list of books I will be reading this semester but you can bet your ass that I will start reading the books at the same time. I've been rereading the manga series, and volume 3 is the story that Bloodlust is based on. It's amazing how different the two mediums are from one another in a lot of aspects, yet still both tell the same exact story perfectly. Yes, there are a LOT of changes in Bloodlust that differ from the manga, yet both versions are as equally compelling as the other. Your video painted the story in a beautiful and unique way, giving Bloodlust and the original anime film the love they deserve.

VHD set me aside, when I was young boy in the early 90's, and explained to me how the dark and the terrifying can be beautiful in ways other will never see. I saw the first Vampire Hunter D in 95 when I was 15 and it blew me away. I had seen some anime before but nothing like the world D inhabited. When Bloodlust came to the States I bought it as soon as it was available, knowing nothing of the story. I wasn't disappointed. I had a couple of my friends who were into anime come over, we had pizza and a few beers and watched one of the most stunning films ever animated. I would love to see Vampire Hunter D get the Castlevania/Deviman Crybaby treatment. A full series that adapts more of the stories from the novels. If a well made D series came to Netflix I would be more than happy to resubscribe to the service.

Vampire Hunter D was the first anime I ever saw back in the late 80s. A friend of mine's dad had it and let us watch it and growing up on cartoons like He-Man, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Gobots and the like Vampire Hunter D blew our minds. I didn't think anything could possibly be better in animation in anyway shape or form. Then a few years later I saw Akira and was proven wrong, but this just holds a special place in my heart as the thing that opened the door for me for a whole new level of animation and storytelling.

My first memories are of Bloodlust. My dad showed it repeatedly to a... literal baby. And then again to a toddler. D is practically tattooed behind my eyelids. For years I had reccurring dreams of the ring scene. For years I actually didn't know the name of the movie or really what it was. It wasn't until my teens that I figured out what my visions were of. I'm pretty sure as a kid I thought I was just possessed or had a really intense fever dream. I would just see things and have a scene flash in my mind or not understand why something was so familiar. It seems to me that every time they start a new project, things conspire against it. _American Wasteland_ got canceled because the Western creative team couldn't agree with Kikuchi on a direction. The 2000s manga adaptation only reached vol. 8 when the mangaka suffered a career-ending injury, just as she was reaching her stride. The first issue of the _Message from Mars_ comic is excellent, but the lead artist had to step away due to a family emergency. The animated series they've been developing is on hold due to Covid. It's a bummer. There's so much source material, and it's seriously got one of the coolest settings in fiction, imo. At least the _Pathfinder_ RPG sourcebook they did for the _Message from Mars_ Kickstarter was successful.

I think the main issue with Bloodlust was that the plot was relatively simple - save the girl. But it's so beautifully done and there are so many layers to the simple plot it has now artistic merit than other anime with twists and turns. It reminds me of Mad Max: Fury Road in that regard.

It's a series :D the first one is the first one from the 80's. The 3rd one Demon Deathchase is the one Blood Lust is about. They're all stand alones so you can read them in any order. I only remember a call back to a previous book once. Edit: each book has multiple ink sketch illustrations by Amano too!

Not only have you made thinking about my old favourites again enjoyable and cast light on them at angles I hadn't considered, you're a reliable source of new things to check out too.
