Amy Beth, this is one of the clearest steeking tutorials I've seen. Thanks for anticipating issues and giving solutions. You've given us enough foreknowledge to steek with confidence. And the mug cozy project idea is brilliant!

Any Beth - you are a glorious ROCK ⭐️ in my book! Thank you for this. On the forever years I’ve knitted I’ve never steeked anything - like ever! I remember my grandmother crocheting and then a zipper - but that was when I was like 8! Ions and forever moons ago. Like someone else said, my impression of current methods was the necessity of “toothy wools”. Ummm I don’t have much of that, as usually all the items I make are gifts with sensitivities kept in mind. Cotton blends, softer wool blends - so I was always hesitant in even thinking about it. Also attending classes or festivals or retreats where classes are available is no longer a physical option for me. This - this was brilliant! You speak my language, made it less scary with great concise points to consider in your always delightful delivery. A mug cozy may be just the thing... a test run on a tube also. I haven’t sewed anything since Winnie the Pooh and crew costumes when my kids were under 5! Before that, believe or not, theater pieces, a wedding dress even.... yet the machines have all changed, so have the fabrics - throw in knitted garments and that fearless confidence I once had is under a rock somewhere!! HA! Funny how life, age and stuff can do that. My MIL old ancient old as in cannot get parts for - I have and slowly working to restore - it’s what I learned on. That being said a new all digital bells and whistles that make me feel like a deer in headlights is now on the scene courtesy of my kids. I’ve got to just take a deep breath, have a run on it, familiarize myself and see what muscle memory there is and/or teach this old dog some new tricks!! (While checking out all the rocks round here and find my fearless spirit in hiding) 😍 So many delightful sweater designs that I think would be equally stunning cardigans (I don’t wear sweaters - yes I’m in NY and winters are cold - hell I don’t even have a winter jacket HA!) but cardigans are my style - now just maybe I can knit in the round (easier for me) and with fearless and curious on board do this!!! *whew* Many of us are always wanting to learn - it keeps us moving forward, feeds the creative soul, good for the body & mind! That’s one of the things I adore about you- that spirit - right or wrong or figuring it out & learning too with a spirit of laughter and grrrrrs, the experience you share helps us too on your journey as well as our own. Your voice is significant for so many reasons - for me, it brightens my day. Makes my heart smile, giggle, and be okay with who and what I am and do. *end cheerleading of all things Amy Beth and your inspiration in this community* In all seriousness however - you do ROCK YO!! 🧡

I want to thank you for your video! It's so nice of you to do this for us..I'm planning on doing my first sweater soon and I'm going to steek it, to, but noticed at time stamp 12:44 that the orange thread you are using as a guide is off by one stitch to the right of the work! I hope you noticed that before you started steeking the sweater. I am not sure at all if that will make a difference when you go to sew down each side of the opening, but it would make me crazy if I snipped it and then it messed up!
@fatsquirrelfibers6 жыл бұрын
Kelly. Dang yep, it was off a stitch, but I think only at the top....luckily, even though I did cut it, it’s not a problem at all!

Wonderful! Thanks a bunch. I'm wondering if a crochet slip stitch would be as secure but less bulky than the single crochet?
@fatsquirrelfibers6 жыл бұрын
Tracy Hiatt Grice I have never even heard of that stitch! I will have to check it out!
@tracyhiattgrice55656 жыл бұрын
Oh, it's easy. When you've drawn up two loops on your hook, rather than yo-ing again, just pull one loop through the other. Might not be much flatter, but maybe. I'm going to knit a tube and try steeking, as you suggested.
@christysewell89746 жыл бұрын
Just using the slip stitch works much better, creates less bulk, and generally prevents the fabric from becoming ruffly. That is the only way I steek. It is the method Meg Swansen recommends.
@erniejofo4 жыл бұрын
I'm nervous. I just finished a pullover made out of Berrocco superwash. I now love the feel of it and the color but not the style. I wish I had made it in a cardigan style instead. My issue is that I already wet blocked and air dried it naturally. Is it to late to steek? It has bottom and neck ribbing.
@fatsquirrelfibers4 жыл бұрын
Julie Ruiz it is not too late, but it’s important to really reinforce the stat stitching with sw wool as it’s a bit more slippery.
@kimmysmiley13526 жыл бұрын
I heard that you can’t steek Cotton because it’s so slippery. What do you think?
@susannebenson54206 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for this great video. I have one question. Would you ever use a walking foot to sew rather than reduce pressure on the foot?
@fatsquirrelfibers6 жыл бұрын
Susanne Benson you certainly could use a walking foot! I didn’t mention it because I didn’t want to overwhelm non-sewists, and I haven’t used one for that purpose, so didn’t feel confident recommending it.

Crochet slip stitch reinforcement instead of a SC? Eliminates the bulk...
@pepperann25896 жыл бұрын
You are COOL!!!!!!
@sydneyschrack706 жыл бұрын
Is using the sewing machine to reinforcement with after thought heals a good idea?
@fatsquirrelfibers6 жыл бұрын
Sydney Schrack that is a great question. This is why I wouldn’t sewing reinforce for an afterthought heel: a) you would have to do it by hand as manipulating on a standard sewing machine would be impossible and b) I think it would be a noticeable ridge underfoot and c) it’s not at all necessary. More on C: unlike steeking which cuts the thread of each row, an afterthought heel only cuts one thread leaving tidy little loops that can easily be picked up and worked.

Great steeking walkthrough. I agree that a practice steeking tube is very helpful. I did this to practice and I ended up with a scarf for my Dad. You can check out my Ravelry project here: www.ravelry.com/projects/Bewitched2Knit/steeking-practice-scarf
