Excellent discussion! Contemporary politicians and journalists hold to a definition of "Right" and "Left" that proves absolutely meaningless. Witness not only Putin, but also Orban in Hungary and Fico in Slovakia -- and, especially, the Perons in post-war Argentina. A more appropriate spectrum of the political world would be that which was understood more than a century ago: liberalism (in the sense of classical liberalism) vs. authoritarianism. In the end, totalitarian systems -- whether ruled by Stalin, Mao, Hitler, Mussolini, Peron, or Putin -- ultimately have far more in common with each another than any of those regimes have in common with democracies that recognize individual rights..

Great analysis from the experts, but I guess common sense isn't a part of the acedemic outlook - it's pretty simple - Russia's behaviour and governing system is quite normal for the 10 th centur y. A historian of the middle ages or earlier would be at home with 'modern' Russia ! Think about it - are there parallels ?

Normally like the discussions on this channel but found it mostly dibble and found it hard to get a handle on what was trying to be said. The speech pathways were all over the place and the woman speakers need to take Elocution lessons, not only painful for the ears, but a neurotic disconnect to the context, which was just difficult to fathom a clear context of what was really meant to be said. Incoherent to say the least.

So far this is the weakest podcast in this series. Four speakers can't tell a word about genocidic nature of the war, neither they can figure out rise of xenophobia in Russian culture in general. This is much wider topic than putin's elites but who should say that if not four "scientists". And this old Russia lover who call Russians fled country "preservation of talents" forgot to say how arrogant most of them are when it comes to ukrainian war.

Ukraine can't win this war and never could. No wonder weapon will save Zelenskyy hide as no wonder weapon saved Hitler's hide. Russians are fighting a war of attrition. It's not about getting more territory. It's about decimating Ukrainian army. In latest offensive that proved to be an epic unmitigated disaster Ukrainian army showed itself completely impotent. This impotence is the result of a successful implementation of this attrition strategy. According to Ukrainian soldiers interviewed by BBC Russians now have advantage in artillery 1:10. Russians use more than 100 precision glide bombs every single day and Ukrainian army has zero defense against them. Meanwhile Zelenskyy is running out of cannon fodder. He is forced conscripting even amputees, HIV positive and people with hepatitis. It's a sign of utter desperation and hysteria . At this point unconditional surrender is the only practical solution for Ukraine. Hitler's Germany also refused to admit defeat until Hitler killed himself, then Keitel signed unconditional surrender.
