I just came here from your "i hate this costume piece" video. I hadn't seen this one before, but I really enjoyed it! It clarified exactly what was impractical about boob-armor. (I'd always known it was somehow impractical beyond discomfort, but not being an expert on armor, and being to lazy to spend any time actually thinking about how sword points would be effected by the slant, or pressure points, i hadn't figured out why)

I recently saw a picture of a 15th-century plate armor that purported to be Joan Of Arc's. It looked just like any other piece of armor, except the metal below the waist (judging from the picture) seemed to dip inwards a bit more than would be comfortable for a man. Is this real (doubtful, but you never know)?
@glukolover3 жыл бұрын
I think it's also worth noting that in most media, movies, games, comics, etc; that armor doesn't really armor. It's often treated as tissue paper that blades can just carve right through, just that it lessens damage rather then outright prevent it. Naturally this is obnoxiously stupid, but if that's the premise your starting from, it not a big reach as to why boob armor is a thing. If armor isn't really protecting you anyway, who cares what it looks like. That seems to be the line of thought anyway.

That being said, some art has women in...well, breast-plates too :) But then given that if you go by movies, even movies of historical events, we put female fighters in all kinds of ridiculous stuff (shoes included) one must take everything with some grain of salt!

One of the things I liked about some of the Amazons in WW is the way they would have a metal plate across half their chests, with the other half of their chest being covered in flexible leather. It was clear from the training scenes though that these Amazons were archers. It felt practical for their battlefield role. The flexible side gave their drawing arm more range of motion to ready and fire arrows, while the rigid plate is on the side of the chest that faces more toward the enemy while she is firing. It felt like a nice compromise between mobility and protection, and the asymmetry gave it some nice visual interest. Plus it gave it an aesthetic connection to the myth of Amazon's who would remove one breast to facilitate drawing bows without actually being that.

After thinking a lot about it, I personally think that the Amazons' armor kinda makes sense considering that they are in peaceful times. Sure, they're preparing for an invasion, but not everyone seems to believe it's really going to happen, and since they still wear armor, probably because of social status or something, it makes sense that some of them decided to go more for aesthetic than functionality. The fact that we see some actually functional armor here and there shows that they do have functional armor, but not everyone chooses to wear it, because not everyone thinks they will need it. But then again, none of that is on the movie, so this is no more than my personal opinion.

The interesting thing about Hoplite armor is that it's meant to support a very particular form of combat. When you stand in a shield wall with that big shield, the only places that will be exposed are your head and your legs, so you only absolutely need to armor those parts. The rest is just extra precaution. But that armor pattern doesn't work if you remove it from that specific combat style. Without a shield wall you need protection from every direction and without the shield you need heavier armor in general. Like fully covering gambeson, mail or plate suit. "Fully covering" being the keywords here.
@Terminalsanity7 жыл бұрын
Hoplites did not form shield walls they fought in phalanx formations. And they didn't wear thigh armor beyond faulds or chain mail for the same reason most foot soldiers through out history and to this very day do not do so: the loss of freedom moment is simply not worth it. The reason why medieval knights wore thigh plate armor is because they primarily fought on horseback meaning the most lethally exposed parts of the bodies and most vulnerable to men on foot being ridden down were their legs. The protect center mass and head leaving legs arms is actually the predominate approach for foot soldiers indeed its pretty much the only approach that's actually still in use in modern combat.
@Erika-gn1tv7 жыл бұрын
A shield wall is a fundamental feature of a phalanx. Otherwise they wouldn't be wielding those big shields. And did the hoplites even wear mail? I though that was a later invention.
@AbelDuviant4 жыл бұрын
Without a shield wall you're fighting alone, and if you're fighting alone against multiple opponents from all directions you've fucked up and are going to die. Most important places to armor are the head and the chest/abdomen, then the arms, and finally the legs. Goign for the legs was (is) a huge risk so it wasn't done all that often. A shield also let's you get away with a whole lot more. I'm gonna quote HTTYD here, but if you have to choose between a helmet and a shield, pick a shield. Is that the correct quote or was it choosing between a sword and a shield? Eh, idk. Shield's most important, it protects more than any single piece of armor ever could. There's also the "poor man's plate armor," brigandine. Canvas or leather with metal plates on the inside. Not only can it be effective, but the plates can make its form stylish. @Niek Vels I'm thinking of how it would take more skill to rivet 40-100 some odd plates into adequate protection as opposed to hammering and hardening one or two large steel sheets into a proper breastplate and I can't figure it out. It was a very popular armor for 200+ years, I'm not sure why it would be so popular if a breastplate was not only easier to make but also less expensive.
@Modighen3 жыл бұрын
@Niek Vels Those are good points, but if it takes two minutes to set a rivet, even 300 rivets would still be quicker than a steel cuirass. My apologies, I should have thought of that earlier.

Boob windows, boob socks, thongs, exposed skin everywhere. Heck, Mass Effect, set in the future, has chastplates molded to have boobs on the female soldiers (though to be fair, male armor often has their abs molded on the armor). Though, as I've gotten older, I care more about in universe consistency, rather than just function. If the male characters are fully covered, I expect the same of women. If the female characters are scantily clad, the men better be, too. I don't mind some fantastical outfits, if both genders look equally ridiculous. TL;DR: The boob window was the publisher's demand, neither the developers nor the fans wanted it. Hi Jill, I want to say a couple of things in defense of King's Bounty since I'm a huge fan of the developer studio since 2004. The game you presented ('Armored Princess') is a sequel to King's Bounty: The Legend, a 2008 game which in itself is a successor to a 1990 game. Now both of these were made by a tiny Russian game dev studio ('Katauri') which created the Space Rangers series (relatively unknown in the West). The 2008 game was absolutely fantastic, became a real gem in Russian game dev community, which are very rare, and made us all feel real pride for what games we Russians can make. Unfortunately it too wasn't as popular in the west as the publisher ('1C Company') would want, this is why they demanded the Princess to have boob window for more successful advertisement. The entire fan community was basically enraged with the decision but unfortunately we didn't have any say in this matter. In the game itself you don't really fight as the Princess (you only explore the world map while riding a horse), so the only place you even see her in full height is the game title poster. Sad but true! Hope you see this message and feel at least slightly better even though it doesn't really make the situation less ugly. All the best.

Just my thoughts. I'm not a armourer or knight or doctor, I'm just a random on the internet. It's easier to make a breast plate with a single bulge instead of two. Most single piece breast plates have an air gap between the steel and the underlying layers / body. The idea being that if something hits the armour hard enough to dent it, there is enough of a crumble zone underneath so you don't sustain serious injury. Having a boob plate guides the weapon to your sternum and reduces the air gap so there is a higher chance of blunt force trauma to your chest. That can be solved by pushing the armour further out to recreate the air gap but then you would find it harder to hold a weapon in front of you, which would reduce your ability to defend yourself. I imagine these problems could be addressed but it would be simpler to just make a non booby breast plate. I used to fence many years ago and one of the finest fencers I ever had the privilege to meet was quite buxom. She used the plastrons but there were a few times where the sword (Foil, Sabre, Epee, she did all three) skipped off the plate and nailed her in a sensitive spot. On the other hand, she was good enough that she could fight multiple opponents at the same for fun.

One of the better scenes in David Eddings' Belgariad series involved Ce'Nedra, who is establishing herself as the figurehead leader of the United Armies of Goodness, tries to get a blacksmith to make her some armor and her "what will look awesome" runs into his "what would actually make sense." Boob plate is discussed, as is the combination of chain and plate (impossibly heavy) and other impractical embellishments.
@HallowqueenCrafting6 жыл бұрын
You are not wrong. Eddings work, in general, is pretty honest about what fantasy arms and armour would really be like. There are several in-universe conversations about knightly armour and the like in the Elenium and Tamuli what with all the various knightly orders and their take on it, as well as some other views on fighting from other groups that had very different styles other than walking tin can. I really enjoy the attempts at realism in an otherwise fantastic world, as well as the dry wit and snark that pervades Eddings books.

However bad Eddings' writing/worldbuilding is on some fronts (his sociology is terrible, he only has about 2 female characters - young Leigh and old Leigh - and his plots are mostly an excuse to hang out with his standard cast of characters for a while), he does have some good points too. His characters are generally fun to hang out with, and there are times like Ce'Nedra's boob-plate where he makes good sense - boob plate is generally impractical, but for show armour that is definitely not meant to get involved in actual serious fighting, awesome-but-impractical isn't an issue. Maybe someday, I'll get over the ending of The Dreamers, where, after 4 books of character development, against the background of a plot that's completely irrelevant (the narrator and the characters all agree that it's pretty much just going through the motions), they use time travel to undo the inciting incident, thereby resetting all the characters but one to their crappy initial state, with no reason for them to be rescued from that...

When I did medieval combat fights, my trainer had a story about how the rules stated all combatants needed to wear a helm, a gouget, a kidney belt, steel elbow and knee guards and a jockstrap/breast protector (depending on gender). One guy went into a fight wearing ONLY those items. He broke his collarbone, 3 ribs and his left forearm. Theres a reason why you wear armour in a fight.
@maximeteppe76274 жыл бұрын
I'm suuuuper late to the party but... I've got froiends who do historical recreations of battles and medieval swordfighting and whatnot. their consensus seems to be that heavy "plate" armor doesn't restrict movement as much as some people claim (the whole "can't get onto a horse" or "can't get up if you fall" thing. Armor that is well adjusted to your measurements should barely restrict any movements at all. the exception is of course that the chestplate isn't very flexible. but the armor is heavy, meaning that you have to spend more energy for any movement you make in it, so you get tired faster. so in the case of the outrageous illustration, the shoulder pieces could not restrict movement per se, but the weight would be better expanded on protection in more vital spots (helmet, and chest, mostly).
@macmcleod11884 жыл бұрын
It really depends because jousting Armor was literally that heavy. The men had to be lifted onto their horses with machines. And even a well-crafted suit of full plate mail ways between 15 and 25 kg. Or 33 to 55 lb. As you say if it's well-made then it shouldn't be much harder than carrying a well-balanced backpack with a similar weight. But after fighting for even 10 minutes with the intent to kill, people are already exhausted and panting.
@torfinnzempel61233 жыл бұрын
@@macmcleod1188 while the armor is that heavy, the full plate armor bore it's weight at the waist, so it was in many respects lighter then mail armor from a few cenruries earlier. Pectoral cuirass could actually protect a warrior although they were mainly used for show rather than combat armour however the "muscles" were rounded to make blows roll off the armour and provided reinforcing. They were discontinued in use by the Roman and Greeks due to the bronze in between the "abdominal's" would split if the bronze was too thin. Additionally they required a lot of work to be custom fitted to wearer. Thus why the Linothorax and Lorica hamata took over as armour of choice for troops. Greeks and Hellenic armies and roman's also wore as much protection as their role on the battlefield dictated a skirmisher or peltast would not need heavy armour only a shield and maybe a helmet because they were required to move away from enemy if they got close and give them a volley or javelins or arrows. A legionary or phalangite or hoplite as they were marching lock step towards the enemy to engage with swords and spears would need more protection over movement.

Clothing, especially thick woollen clothing, actually does a pretty decent job at stopping, or at least reducing the damage dealt by, cuts As far as boob plate goes, Shadiversity has spoken on the topic relatively frequently and has come to some pretty logical conclusions that I agree with, and if made properly by an armourer worth their salt, it would be no less protective than non-boob armour. The main differences are in the increased difficulty of crafting the armour, but we know medieval people loved to show off how rich they were, and so the statement of having an exquisitely crafted piece of boob armour would be a no-brainer for your discerning woman-at-arms (or rather boob-owner-at-arms) Also, the pecs on musculata cuirasses from antiquity weren't un-boob-like, and they still worked as functional pieces of armour Really good video though :)

Yeah, I didn’t like how Wonder Woman was so...UN-savage. Maybe this is because I watched the animated Justice League series, but she’s a sassy baddie; she doesn’t need to be stereotypically feminine. Can we have a female hero who isn’t predominantly kind and naive? Also, the ending would have worked better if she hadn’t actually DEFEATED war. Like, the personification of war. The whole tone up until the last ten minutes was “humans are good, but also do bad stuff,” and having the ENTIRETY of the world just be under the spell of a Disney Twist Villain undermined the theme. Still, an enjoyable movie.
@torfinnzempel61233 жыл бұрын
I will say 2 things. One, it wasnt womanly love for a man that was the love thst saved the day, it was the capacity for a human to sacrifice themselve out of love for their fellow human that is what made WW realize humans were worth saving. And 2. Of course she was naive. She was raised isolated on that island. This was her first experience with the wider world. So her naivety had nothing to do with her being a woman. And everything to do with her being new to the world. She is consistently portrayed as extremely confident throughout the entirety of the movie. And male heros raised in similar ways as WW have been equally portrayed as naive.

I’m in firm agreement on the ridiculous cleavage divot. The only thing besides that that bugged me about the Amazons in Wonder Woman was the conspicuous absence of shields. One of the reasons the Akhaians could get by with greaves and helmets was they had big hoplons and tight formations. I mean, how cool would it have been if the Amazons had formed up in a phalanx and swept the Germans from the beach? Clothing actually isn’t as useless as you might think in terms of protection. During the Napoleonic Wars, Dragoons would roll their greatcoats and strap them diagonally across the torso to provide some protection from sword cuts. Also, please do make a video on spiked pauldrons. It’s another fantasy armor trend that needs to die. Peripheral vision is important!

The armor is made to exalt the masculine properties most prominently desired in a period of time, because men were the ones who were going to use them more commonly ... that does not mean that if the roles would be reversed, that type of modifications would not begin to appear. armor, exalting the desired feminine properties. In addition, although having the breast shape would guide the weapon towards the central part of the armor, the weapon would hit another part first and would be deflected, losing much of the force of the blow and being the last contact in the middle much less effective, thus the armor would work. Although it is a man reviewing these concepts, Shadyversity (whose channel specializes in medieval weapons and armor) has a couple of videos on whether this type of armor would make sense in the medieval historical context.

I actually think that a slight valley in the middle of the chest is not a bad thing It deflects swords away from your ribs and you can thicken the armour in that spot. It is also over the sternum which is very hard. I’m not sure how it would affect arrow shots.

On armor in a world with magic - for me personally i view it as a kind of version of mage armor / shield spells. Obviously if mages can conjure invsible barriers that protect them as well as plate armor would, then bikini armor and similiar actually becomes valid. The "uncovered" parts of it may actually be covered by invisble magical barriers. if thats the case, theres actually benefits for this type of armor. 1) easy to move in, little weight 2) by creating "open" spots on the armor you invite the opponent to strike there - which is a trap cause due to magic barrier thats actually the best armored part of the armor. Also, by knowing that your opponent WILL strike at these spots you can predict their attacks easier and counter better and trap them 3) studies proved, that males are indeed distracted by sexy women even in combat scenarios, they are more hesistant to strike and their reaction time increases drasticly. So fighting aroused male opponents is actually easier and giving the woman a delibaerate advantage

Looking at the King's Bounty armor, my best explanation would be - that's something you would wear out of combat. If you were a mercenary, adventurer, or whatever, and even during peace wanted everyone to know that you are a warrior, you could perhaps wear something like this that bears some resemblance to armor, as a status symbol of sorts. It could even have no metal parts, just hardened fabric or something. Makes more sense than wearing full plate armor all the time out of combat. Now, of course in our reality, there were plenty of ways to recognize a knight 'out of armor', so we don't have equivalent clothes that resemble armor. In fact (though that's a massive oversimplification), arming doublets could be considered a piece of clothing that someone could wear out of combat to be instantly recognizable as a knight or man-at-arms, even if you miss all the other cues. But in a fantasy world with traveling adventurers, made up culture, etc.? It could make sense to have such armor-like clothing. Not to mention, some adventurers could conceivably want to present their physique out of combat. So it's basically an outfit design that both does that, and hints that you do have real armor in the closet, ready to unpack for real combat. Alternatively, it could be partial, but real, armor so you're basically wearing some armor all the time, and put on the missing parts when readying for combat.

I feel like if you have to have chain mail bikinis then in order for it to make any kind of sense then to justify then it would have to be magical such that the defensive properties are kinda reversed. The armor projects magical defense across the parts that aren’t covered to make them effectively invulnerable but the weak spots are the parts that do the projecting, the armor itself. You then have some justification for the armour revealing more than it covers, because you want to minimise the weak points. Though how that armour would actually look is beyond me, it would probably take an expert to design. Though I imagine that it still couldn’t be too skimpy because presumably the force of a blow to the protected areas would still have to be conveyed to the body through the actual armour and you wouldn’t want your arms to be chopped off by your bra straps if you were hit square in the chest.

The saddest thing about King's Bounty: The Legend's sexy armor is that not only is it stupid for all of the reasons you've provided, it's also in sharp contrast to King's Bounty itself. The original game (King's Bounty 1990) doesn't have the graphics of the 2008 game, but it does have some depiction of women clothing. One of the four possible protagonist is a woman, but while she's the only one without armor, she: a) doesn't wear the most revealing clothes (the barbarian has almost no clothes to speak of) b) is a mage and her clothes are a slightly modified version of what the male wizards wear. I don't know what sadder, that gamers of this series (its related to Heroes of Might and Magic) are actually regressing in their attitudes towards women and game inner integrity, or that they actually defend their pitiable fantasies.

People always comment when fantasy women are wearing unpractical armor but the shirtless muscle men are always ignored.

Uh, no ? There's a lot of discussion on the topic of berserkers and similar warriors in fantasy. Their not wearing armour is usually adressed by history nerds like Skall or Lloyd

@1:07. Oof. That commentary didn’t age well. Or maybe it did, but the Starwars writers were like ‘hold my beer’

Instead of having the individual cups, armour convexed would serve more purpose if a shallow blade was directed towards the breasts, because the armor is more puffed out to create enough distance between plating and the chest. A good example would be Sir Gregor in Game of thrones season 6. When one of the sparrows tried taking an axe to his chest, the armour stuck out just far enough to prevent the blade making contact.

Although many historical warriors fought with little or no armour, they usually had a shield for protection

THANK YOU. I know this video is a few years old by now, but recently I watched a video by another KZbinr (who, surprise surprise, was a GUY) defending boob plate armor. His main points were really that historical armor (like the codpiece you showed) can often be designed purely for its appeal rather than practicality. But he failed to point out, as you did, that it would still be hella uncomfortable! And not just in terms of deflecting weapons, as you mentioned the part about hitting the ground or another surface. edit: that "uNfortunate Valley" I'm dying XD

The thing about the characters you play as is the commander of a squad that fights for her. Pikemen, archers, wolves and giant wasps are just some of the units she can bring to a battle. The women you play as never enter into the battle herself, she stays in the background and orders her units to move, attack and activate skills. Just something to think about.

1:06 Was this made before Carrie Fisher launched into space without a suit with the power of hugs? Because this feels like it was made before Carrie Fisher launched into space without a suit with the power of hugs.

Seriously. Not dying is unisex. Armour is a balance between complete protection and completely mobile. It has to be both protective and practical.

You have beautiful blue eyes and red hair, don't spoil it by giving a red background. P.S. The glasses are glaring. P.S.2 Comment mainly for youtube algorithm (promotes comments better than likes, and we need creators with substantive content).

wonder woman doesn't need armor. she has everything-proof wristbands and lightning-speed reflexes with which to use them.
