"Dwarfs" vs. "dwarves" - "Dwarfs" is technically the correct term for multiple Real World little people, but "dwarves" is the generally accepted plural form for mythical little people, because Tolkein (being Tolkein) decided "dwarves" made more etymological sense. Seriously. 😂
@MissCaraMint11 ай бұрын
Dwarves also sounds nicer.
@bloodspatteredguitar11 ай бұрын
I believe he preferred "dwarrows", but went for "dwarves" for legibility. I think he also wanted to distinguish his fantasy dwarves from real world dwarfs. Snow White's little men could really be either, and being a pre-Tolkien fairy tale, could even be fantasy dwarfs.
@gordonmcmillan470911 ай бұрын
" Tolkein decided "dwarves" made more etymological sense " Well he was an Oxford Fellow and a Professor of Anglo-Saxon so if anyone should know it would be him. There is the story about how he got his new students to speak to him, and then identified every bit of their accents and their origins, just to demonstrate that when he spoke to them in Anglo-Saxon they could believe his language and pronunciation.

I always enjoyed mirror mirror because everyone seemed to be having fun. I was always under the impression that they were handed a horrid script and everyone involved just went “this script? Are you sure? F**k it, at least we’ll have fun with it” and proceeded to go completely over the top with everything. There are scenes where you can see the actors struggling not to break. It’s not good, but it’s infinitely more fun than the dour, joyless Snow White and the huntsman that came out the same year.

@riverstyx725111 ай бұрын
That makes sense tbh, Snow honestly felt like a side character femme fatale written to just validate all the men around her. I mean she goes around either falling in love with the first guy she meets or changing everything about herself to fit in with a group of men. And she has zero thoughts and feelings of her own. Not even so much of a reaction to anything she’s experiencing or anything happening to her. The only time she seems to smile is when she pleases some guy, it’s a little weird considering she’s the main character. Plus the end of that fight scene was sus. It felt like the writers going “don’t worry guys, the prince may have (barely) lost this fight because the plot demands it, but he has already won the heart of the princess without even trying! Look, she’s making doe eyes and calling him cute! Isn’t that great?”

My impression of the dialogue is that it's all first draft lines. "You're a jerk" and "if you and your friends stop robbing them" are just straightforward descriptions of what the characters are feeling. Like if you took a swordfight scene from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie and removed all the jokes and personality while still having them plainly state their intentions, this is what you'd get.

Funny story about keeping one's eyes open when around swords... The actor Günter Meisner was blind as a bat without his glasses. He played Adolf Hitler in the 1983 miniseries The Winds of War. Many scenes were filmed on location in Germany. Well, when you are an American crew filming in Europe and need extras, hitting up US military bases is something of a tradition. My dad, was stationed in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (I was a toddler) working as a public affairs liaison for the USAF. He was tapped to play an SS officer, and was the shortest (5'10") one in line. He was also the darkest (brown hair and hazel eyes) in the line of 6'+ blond US Army guys. However they taught him to do the saber salute for the scene were Hitler arrives at The Eagle's Nest. Günter Meisner missed his mark, because he, as I mentioned, is blind without his glasses. My dad did the saber salute and damn near took off Meisner's hand (because they gave my dad a real sword). So, I agree, keeping eyes open is important. Also, my dad "kept" the SS Officer's gloves he was supposed to turn back in. So, there is a bit if film history in my dad's house.

I think the biggest issue with the fight for me is that it almost feels too playful on the Prince's end. Its been a while since I saw the Zoro fight but from what I remember you at least got the implication that if the guy didn't take his foe seriously he would get badly hurt while here I never got the impression that even if this was a serious fight the prince would get hurt. It felt more like an older sibling playing with a younger sibling rather than two romantic leads interacting. The fact that Snow White wins seemingly more due to luck regarding positioning and having a good throwing arm rather than skill or careful maneuvering does not help matters.

I'm sitting here with my dinner that is primarily boiled white rice. I feel unjustly called out!

I kind of enjoyed the flirty fight between Esmerelda and Phoebus. Also, I remember when I first saw the trailer for the live-action George of the Jungle and it looked like another Tarzan movie. Then you hear "duh, duh..." I didn't even need the third note--I was rolling in my seat laughing because I thought it was so hilariously ridiculous that they would make a live-action George of the Jungle. Then I saw the movie. I wasn't wrong. lol

It warmed my heart to hear "The plot goeth thusly" again ❤️

According to Tolkien (who wrote the entry on the word "dwarf" in the OED) both dwarves and dwarfs are correct.

Mostly-uncultured American here, albeit with an ear for various ways English words are pronounced. I could listen to Jill say "out now" all day long. It's so adorable and Irish. And yes, hooray for the book. Ordered it yesterday.

I chuckled at the George of the Jungle joke. Pleasantly surprised that you picked up on it. Enjoyed the analysis. Patiently (?) waiting for B&N to ship my book order. Good luck on the move.

Obviously the Queen is the best character in this. I love how silly this film is 😊

At 12:06 you see the props are sport epees with a fancy guard. FRANCHINI blades. Its all half arsed.

I'm so done with this cold. I hope everyone else is feeling well, or at least better than I am feeling. I'm reading THE BOOK right now and I'm enjoying it.

I like this movie, but not because of Snow and the prince. Mostly because Julia Robert’s as the Queen is so good and the dwarves are also great. I feel like this movie knows what it’s trying to be which is a campy Snow White comedy and so nothing is meant to be taken too seriously.

So, I received the kindle version of Just Stab Me Now the other day… And so yesterday I just sat and read it. All of it. I finished your book in a day. That’s generally a pretty good sign for me.

I'm going to say this again - Just Stab Me Now - couldn't put it down! The only thing I'm disappointed about it is how quickly I managed to finish it! I "just one more chapter'ed" myself through it in about two days! What can I say? I couldn't put it down! It is fantastic! I love it!

I felt this whole fight just increased my impression that the prince was an arrogant, condescending sort and not charming in the least. There was no chemistry between the white rice and mayonnaise.

The book is brilliant, as is this video! Congratulations to actor combatant, content creator and bestselling author Jill Bearup! I hope you have ample cheese to aid your recovery from a quite tremendously busy week.

Hey, my husband loves white rice. Jasmine white rice, specifically. His mom spent some time in Thailand as a child. I learned to cook rice properly from her. How do you feel about English muffins? I’m eating a homemade one with a banana for breakfast. 😂

As normal service resumes (however long that takes- no rush!), I presume armour review tier lists will make an appearance. Could I suggest a detour into *plot* armour review tier lists as an amusing variant?

Will admit that I love this film in large part because I've got a huge crush on Lily Collins, but I also enjoyed the fantastic costumes, set design, and those silly musical set pieces.

Yay, more fight scene analysis! I love seeing these - I can never have even seen the move you're talking about, but I get so much from your breakdown that I feel like I know the entire story of what's happening and why we are where we are. And for the ones that I HAVE seen? You open my eyes to so many more details that make watching it again an even better experience! Can't wait to see the book!

Just got my copy of Just Stab me Now, in the mail and as soon as I’m finished with my current book, it is what I’m planning to read next. Also I was really happy to see this video pop up in my feed. I hope to see more in the near future. ❤ 😊
