Ethan, if people are telling you that you are better business owner than most, what does that say about most business owners? If people are surprised when they interact with you who interact with wealthy people regularly, what does that say about the average wealthy person? Think about that question and you’ll arrive at the inherent problem peoplehave with capitalism.capitalist system. I saw things remarkably similar to you a few years ago, but my search to try to find the answers to some of the problems has only time and time again led to the realization about how systemic they are, and how systemically they must be addressed as a result. Nothing but peace and love, just felt the need to speak up because I agree with you on seemingly every issue but this one.
@LactoseTheeIntolerant3 ай бұрын
It's not just that greed is so prolific, nor that it stems from our culture, as Ethan suggests. Greed is integral to capitalism. The most greedy corporations tend to be the strongest competitors. However, H3 operates in a small niche market, which is not comparable to capitalism as a whole. In this niche, greed wouldn't necessarily be as beneficial since they aren't really selling a traditional product. Ethan himself is the central 'product,' making the comparison not really relevant. It’s clear he takes it personally. He needs to take a step back and look at the actual arguments people are making, rather than getting emotional and defensive.
@pppppoopppppsks3 ай бұрын
He literally said that capitalism as it exists in America is unethical and corrupt, but that it doesn't have to be that bad. You can say the same thing about any economic system. Simple, ideal economic systems are not switch you can just flip on and achieve perfection; what matters most is how states legislate and enforce those laws. Until we achieve perfect AI communism, of course
@LactoseTheeIntolerant3 ай бұрын
@@pppppoopppppsks Show me a capitalist system where greed and corruption are not issues. It's not just that U.S. culture is uniquely flawed; capitalism inherently promotes these negative behaviors. Capitalism, as an economic theory, emphasizes competition and profit maximization. Companies often achieve the highest sales and lowest costs not by prioritizing employee welfare, paying fair wages, or avoiding unethical practices, but by cutting corners, lobbying politicians, and prioritizing greed. In a truly capitalist system, these businesses will consistently win over an “ethical” business.
@rfghukko3 ай бұрын
people are always greedy, in communism people who owned grocery shops would steal food when there were food shortages so
@AshiwiZuni3 ай бұрын
@@pppppoopppppsksits unethical everywhere. There is no “ethical capitalism” its basically an oxymoron. You cannot say the same about “any economic system” because having an economy does not require exploitation. The world simply deems it appropriate to have their economics rely heavily on the exploitation of the global south via wealth transfer and material extraction to the global north. This REQUIRES capitalism. Even in “social democrat” run countries. Just because Ethan finds that to be okay for now while he feigns empathy for the poor, and disenfranchised, doesn’t mean it is actually morally justifiable.
@mechamania3 ай бұрын
Except “capitalism” is inherently exploitative of workers, no matter how “generous” one is, so long as ALL the value workers’ labor generates is paid to the workers, which makes it _not capitalism,_ by definition. Making money by owning the means of production and so exploiting workers _is_ “what capitalism is.” That’s why there’s _no ethical consumption_ under capitalism. The problem is that *your audience is unduly accusing you,* because _we all live and consume in a capitalist mode of production,_ and as a function not understanding what capitalism is, you’re mistakenly taking the misguided criticisms of sophomoric wannabes to heart when you shouldn’t be. Those are folks who know about that principle of capitalism and superficially apply it without the larger context that “we’re all in the same bowl of boogers” (Mark Mothersbaugh), which Marx’s concept of “dialectical materialism” demands. So, screw those half-baked moron’s while trying to understand that better. Regulation is great, and all, but it doesn’t make capitalism not capitalism. It can make it a “better” form of capitalism, but *it can’t erase those foundational principles* without making it _not capitalism._ Incorrectly naming it “social democracy” doesn’t change that. Of course, as you say, “we can make capitalism whatever we want,” but that’s only true semantically, insofar as the name changes, not the underlying moral and ethical dilemmas inherent in what we, as humans, have historically agreed and continue to to call “capitalism.” _Perhaps_ unfortunately, you are not the arbiter of what “capitalism” means, and until you get the majority of people to agree about what the definition is, you can’t otherwise remove that basic tenet from its definition, so as to evolve its meaning. However, if you understand that “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet” (Billy Shakespeare), then you know that “rebranding it” is bereft of all but superficial meaning. No joke, I am a PhD of Journalism & Mass Communication (Colorado @ Boulder, 2002) who taught (basic and advanced; undergraduate- and graduate-level) theory and research courses (including a political economy of media) and conducted/published peer-reviewed research about the (sub)conscious persuasion and information use effects of advertising and other media as a professor in the College of Communication at the University of Texas @ Austin and in the EW Scripps School of Journalism @ Ohio University for 15 years, prior to disability retirement... and perhaps more importantly, I’ve really enjoyed the show (and Leftovers) for stretches at a time, over the past six or seven years, since. Thanks for helping life be more enjoyable, as you (Ethan) and y’all have... 🍻

Ethan is so optimistic about capitalism but the reality of capitalism is that the capitalists are always going to do what is the worst for everyone else and what is the best for them, because by nature of capitalism, they run the country. He needs to look into capitalism’s origins to understand the point of it. Any system built off of capitalism is going to fail for everyone but the capitalists. It’s disturbing to me that Ethan is constantly defending capitalism saying “no that’s not what capitalism is” while ignoring the blatant reality of what capitalism is actually doing to our society.
@Camass333 ай бұрын

You can have more generous lords, and less generous lords under feudalism. It doesn't mean the vast majority of serfs were not overexploited and that an eventual replacement of the system was necessary
@Camass333 ай бұрын
@@jadesx96 yeah. And he has an out to say “well I was just like all of you and then I worked the system and succeeded at capitalism just like anyone can!” when in reality he got so lucky getting started on KZbin at the perfect time in the perfect conditions to jump into the niche that he did. The vast majority of people cannot win at capitalism because it was built to keep the vast majority of people down.

An argument for Ethans classic rock point. "Modern art' is a time period of art, not current art. Art currently coming out is not modern art. Modern art is and will always be: 1860s to the 1970's.
@HoangLan963 ай бұрын
You could argue if you say modern art, you’re just referring to the word modern as in new vs Modern art, refers to the time period. I think this exact problem is what the crew is arguing about Classic vs classic.
@kellis66453 ай бұрын
@HoangLan96 That's definitely what the argument stems from, but it's not what the term modern art means. Honestly, I'd say ethans right on this.
