it's especially crazy because this is clearly one of his best performances, and after about ten years of making absolute schlock. wahlberg has also basically disowned the movie, which again is nuts because it's what gave him a post funky bunch career.

It wasn’t until sometime later after I watched this that I found out this was inspired by real events and a real person. John Holmes aka Johnny Wad was the inspiration for Mark Walhberg’s character. And the incident at the end with the shootout inspired by The Wonderland murders that John Holmes allegedly was apart of. There’s a movie about called Wonderland and it stars Val Kilmer as John Holmes and also stars Lisa Kudrow from Friends. Yes you get to see Phoebe Buffet in a serious role

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. The combination of music, humor and fantastic acting keep your eyes glued to the screen. The characters and their stories are not full of melodramatic padding, even at their lowest point you feel invested in their outcomes. Every character feels like a believable, well-rounded person with naturalistic authentic dialogue. There's just nothing like "Boogie Nights", every aspect of it goes so well together to create this masterpiece.

I like what the director said about that final monologue. He points out that Dirk is so far gone that he has not only lost sight of whom he once was as Eddie Adams, but even as Dirk Diggler. When he gets up and all you see is his huge dong, it’s as though that’s the only thing about him which really matters or has any real value. “I’m a star, I’m a star, I’m a star. I’m a big, bright shining star.”

@@smoothALOEyeah, it’s such a great ending and was also a shock when I first saw it given how we went the whole film without seeing it, only people’s reactions to seeing it, so the reveal at the end really sums up Eddie/Dirk and where his sense of identity is placed. To him his finally found comfort in his identity, but in reality it’s really all he is, a guy with a big dong. It’s a bittersweet but sorta sad ending.

Paul Thomas Anderson totally captured the era when porn films moved to video. The actors, the producers, the industry, the whole scene-and how it all collapsed on itself. Burt Reynolds did not like this movie at all, but it is arguably his best role, even earned him an Oscar nomination. His performance was that good. Great pick. 🔥

When I saw the trailers for this movie on TV in the late 90's, I saw disco dancing and roller skates so -- *honest to God* -- I thought it was about roller disco. My dad didn't know what it was about, either. He rented it at Blockbuster and invited me to watch it at his house. Those were 2 of the most excruciating hours of my entire life. We both realized at the same time, "Holy ****, this is NOT about roller disco." We entered into an unspoken game of chicken, neither of us speaking, neither of us looking at each other, and neither wanting to be the first to bolt out of the room screaming. Technically, I won: when "the money shot" hit the screen, my dad turns to me and asks, "Is that real?" Like I have a PhD in penises or something. Cringe Scale rating: 15 out of 10.

"Boogie Nights" makes you think this is a movie about porn when it's really about family. A group of dysfunctional broken characters rejected by society that form their own roots, their own connections. To build the people that they call family. The characters are trying to make money the best way they know how and in doing so they have to look out for each other. Amber becomes Dirk and Roller Girl's mom. Jack is the father to them all. John C. Riley is the best friend you would roll with through anything. This is the world of Boogie Nights, for now and forever.

This is such a great character study...on EVERY LEVEL for EVERY CHARACTER. The depth of story that each character has is astounding. When Little Bill kills himself and his wife, it signals the switch from the 70's to the '80s. A complete tone change after that one scene would signal how the industry would change for the worst. When the robbery happens and we see Don Cheadle eyeing that money, we know his life will change for the better. Such as master stoke in directing to let you know things have changed without spelling it out.

When I got the notification this morning that you guys were reacting to "Boogie Nights," I got up early, got my breakfast out of the way, and sat down to watch this. Your reaction was spot on and, as always, priceless. You set a precedent because no other reactors have done this film probably because it would be a tough job to edit and this film is not to everyone's taste. BTW: Curtis you did a GREAT job of editing this. I'm sure it took hours on hours to do it and it was worth it. As much as Burt Reynolds hated doing this movie, I think it's the best thing next to "Mystery, Alaska," he ever did. He got an Oscar nomination for it but lost (and he knew he would lose) to Robin Williams in "Good Will Hunting." The acting credits was an index of Who's Who in TV and Movie Acting and not a single one from the smallest to the biggest role was a disaapointment. You might consider "Marigold." Another Paul Thomas Anderson film that follows the same kind of formula and style Congratulations, guys. You did the impossible.

Seeing Alfred Molina in one of his early roles must have blown your mind, huh? I first saw him in Raiders of the Lost Ark back in the 80's!!!!

In the donut shop scene you said be careful they have cameras. But back in the early '80s when this was taking place there were no cameras in restaurants or most public places.

Hey, that was some good editing. Funny how it's acceptable to show the donut shop guy's brains splattering all over Buck but sex has to be blurred or cut out completely. 🤷🏽‍♀️

This film is in my top 3 of all time. I can watch it over and over. Also one of Hoffman's best perfromances. The characters don't make horrible choices, they did what they needed to do to get through life and find community/family.

The thing, well a major thing, that I liked about the movie is that when Eddie's rejected by his own family, he finds a "family of choice." Jack and Maggie are Father and Mother to a son and a daughter, Eddie and Rollergirl. And when Eddie returns, Jack is right there for him, just like a father should be. But structurally, the film is about the effect of new technology. The conversation between Jack and Floyd in Jack's office during the party is the turning point of the film. Videotape totally changed the porn industry. Artistic aspirations withered and died, and all that was left were carriers for a series of scenes barely related to one another. With betamax and VHS players, you didn't have to sit in a theater to see the films, and quality went out the window. When Jack asks him if it's any good, Kurt answers, "It is what it is."

My dudes- Nina Hartley's character isn't "cheating on WHM's character"- she's engaging in the sex life that she assumes her husband is ok with. He chose to marry an-ex porn-star, so this is him realizing that the fantasy doesn't match the reality for poly couples and going the extreme route. His wife was banging other dudes because she thought her hubby was cool with it. He wasn't. It's a little deeper than just "SHE WAS CHEATING ON HIM!" My man Bill Macy's character got himself into a relationship he wasn't prepared for and snapped. It's not exactly his wife's fault 🙃

Of all the known actors in this film, my favorite has always been Ricky Jay (Kurt Longjohn). He dabbles in movies, probably 20 or so, but was one of the greatest sleight-of-hand and card trick artists in the world. If anyone wants to be amazed watch some of his videos. I guess I just like the fact that he has a career outside of movies and just does it for a whim.

I know it’s way late, but I hope you’ve seen the outtake of John C. Reilly doing really bad magic for Ricky Jay - and cracking him up, an incredibly hard task to accomplish. It’s on the DVD extras.
