Agreed 100%, makes me wonder where he was drawing all this despair & pain from, it just seems to real for him to be acting, I always felt this way about these characters he portrayed, seemed "like a walk in the park" for him... I will miss him.

What's subtle and maybe overlooked is how Dirk, while grossed out and mad, doesn't appear to be homophobic. He was able to overlook this incident and remained friends with Scotty.

It was a different time. It was hip in some circles to be homosexual. Hell, people made careers out of it. David Bowie was single handedly responsible for a lot of dudes coming out. Even when they weren't really homosexual. They just wanted to be hip. Strange times.

@@CrookedEyeSniper Yeah.....I don't think the late 70s/beginning of the 80s was particularly hip to be homosexual. Perhaps compared to the 50s, but definitely more taboo than 80s,90s, and later.

I know people latch onto the "fuckin' idiot" part of this clip, which of course, IS great. But I especially love the part before it where he says he was going to take the car back if Dirk didn't like it. It's such an unusual statement, but said so sweetly and sincerely that your heart just breaks. Poor Scotty.

Lee Smoove Damn dude. I feel your pain. She could've at least said something like "Oh, i really shouldnt. You seem like a cool person, but I'm in a relationship. Im sorry, i hope you don't feel bad...". Even if you knew she was lying, at least you'd know she was aware that by rejecting you, it would be a bit of a direct blow to your self-esteem/ego. For that reason, she lied for your benefit, which imo, is much better than a outright NO. The thing is, men are always expected to make the first move. Some woman will actually let a guy go, even if she is has a crush on him, if he doesn't make a move. That expectation puts a tremendous amnt of stress & dread on a man's psyche. At the instant the 1st move is initiated, the woman has a infallible power over you. She can lift you to outer space or dive you into firey purgatory, w/just a simple "Yes" or "No". Any woman who is ignorant to that power, or wields it recklessly, is truly a bad person!

@Will: what the fuck are you talking about? Fact of the matter is: women don’t owe you ANYthing. They have every right to say “no”....just like you have every right to say “no” if some fat ugly chick asks you out. No one owes anyone anything. That’s a fact of life. Never quit tho. Rejection seriously isn’t that big a deal unless you’re a little wimp.

Its like a roller coaster ride of emotions in 2 mins. I just love the lines, "Can I kiss you? Please? Can I kiss you on the mouth? Please let me." and "You wanna kiss me?" Two fun facts: When they were playing the scene, Mark approached P.T, unsure of his characters motivations and reactions to Scotty's kiss. He wasnt sure Dirk WOULDN'T kiss him back, as Mark saw Dirk as someone who just wanted to give. They did deliberate changing the scene but ultimately stuck to the script. Also, New Line (BN's production company) begged P.T to cut some of the "fuckin idiot"s, saying "We like that says fuckin idiot, but we dont like that he says it NINE times." As Paul often did, he dutifully nodded his head to appease them, then never took any out.

@Vectorreport kind of, but kind of not. I think with the best actors it’s not about money. Have you noticed that many of the very best actors aren’t “leading men” (aka the big money Hollywood stars)? Plus many of the best started on stage which i can assure you wasn’t for big money. But additionally, I don’t think big money ever really motivates good actors, even when they are getting it. This can be shown over and over again by actors who took big money to play shitty roles in shitty movies and phoned it in because it wasn’t artistically engaging.
@shanefolan9175
@shanefolan9175 2 жыл бұрын
@@Thor-Orion That's why many of the big roles top actors like Tom Cruise or Chris Hemsworth take aren't particularly challenging. The same goes for the top actresses like Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diez etc; their films sell but it doesn't mean they will have have any intense acting to do. Many of the best performances aren't found in the blockbusters or in the leading a listers. Kate Winslet and Toni Collette ate 2 actresses who perform very well but don't necessarily headline blockbusters.

Phil was terrific in this film (and all his films he was in really) and whenever he showed up in a film you’d sit up and watch with interest to see what type of character performance he’d be putting in. His role here as Scotty despite getting limited screen time was really great, it’s a testament to both PTA’s character writing and Phil’s great interpretation of the character and his mannerisms coming to life on the screen.

Dirk's reaction is actually kinda heartwarming. Especially back in those days. I feel like most people would've been pissed off and cut ties completely but Dirk's really just more frustrated and confused than anything else. At the end of the day he's just like "Alright no thank you let's go back inside, alright?"

I heard his really good in that one! I think in terms of his PTA collaborations, the wildest jump in how different he was in films was his role here as Scotty and his role as Lancaster Dodd in The Master, you’d totally think it was an entirely different actor playing an entirely different character, but of course Hoffman had that amazing ability to embody just about any role he did. An absolute legend of acting!
