Really love the title! What genre and vibe is it? I'm thinking of picking it up off amazon :)
@benofavalon71214 ай бұрын
@@oliverw3 Hi Oliver, thank you for the interest!😊 well, the genre is 'magical realism', or at least contemporary fiction with some magical/supernatural elements weaved into it😃 Bear in mind that I am a psychologist by trade, so my work has also been a great inspiration for me in terms of the themes, I like to write about😊 A lot of the people I have worked with over the years all dealt with the pressures of modern life in one way or another, so over the years I became interested in delving into those themes in a fictional way 😃 I hope that answers your question! 😊

Essex Dogs by Dan Jones is a really great book. It's his fiction debut I belive . He is a historian and has published lots of non fiction so you know that book is historically accurate 🤣 It's set during the 100 years war, I think you would really like it !

Essex Dogs and Wolves of Winter are so good! Abercrombie-level bleak and grim historical fiction with great character work. Jones really brings siege warfare to life in a similar way Band of Brothers did for WW2

It's just so damn pleasing to open a new book with a beautiful cover. Can't help but make those impulse purchases sometimes. Btw, Mike, I'd really like you to check out Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky and Solaris by Stanislaw Lem. Both are great pieces of sci-fi literature imo and I think you'll enjoy them too.

Cool to see you got some Kathleen O Neal Gear novels! I’ve only read People of The Wolf, an Ice age themed novel she wrote with her husband W Michael Gear. Long Ride Home by W Michael Gear is one of my favorite western novels. Both of their writing styles are gorgeous! My aunt got the chance to workshop with them while she was in her MFA program back in the day.

Very cool! If you like sci-fi, in particular space operas, I recommend both her solo works at her husband’s own solo works. Her Light trilogy is on the same level as Dune for me, both in writing and world building. I have most their books in the Peoples series, have yet to dive in though. Cheers man! 🍻

Just received my Library Copy of «Empire of Silence»: Just short of halfway in, and I already have 3-4 pages of notes on references made by Ruocchio!😆 For example, the star system of Gododdin takes its name from «Y Gododdin», a Welsh Poem about the Heroes of the «Old North» Brythonic Kingdom of Gododdin lost to the invading Anglo-Saxons, the Colosseum in Meidua «The Dome of Bright Carvings» appear to reference both the Bright Carvers from Mervyn Peake’s «Gormenghast» & «Bright Weavings» (Guy Gavriel Kay’s webpage) and while «Xenobite» literally is just Greek for something akin to «Foreign Lifeform», I just can not help but think that it have also become future slang for «scary alien», born from a cultural memory fusion of the Cenobites from the «Hellraiser» Franchise & the Xenomorphs from the «Alien» Franchise! 😆

I loved everything about Empire of the Damned except for the lesser quality of the American hardcover which is ~1/2 the thickness of its predecessor despite being nearly the same number of pages. I know paper isn't cheap but I don't think most people who purchase or collect hardcovers are interested in pages that are almost as thin as newspaper. On the flip side, the latest installment to the Sun Eater series is *impressively* consistent with the rest of the series despite a publisher change. Take a bow Team Ruocchio, job well done!
